  1. No plans to do so any time soon (It's either Cox or Qwest DSL here in Omaha, easy decision  ). My dad pays the bill for the time being but the pipe quality for the last several years we've had it has been amazing. Only 2 outages I can remember, and I can max out the line to the advertised speeds any time I want. The only complaint I have is that the upload speeds are a bit slow, but that's the case just about anywhere.
  2. Cox emails are tied to the account name if i remember correctly, so it was probably shut down when you switched accounts. It may be possible to log in and set up forwarding but I don't think Cox offers any kind of free email service. (Cox is my current ISP, good stuff) This is also why you shouldn't use ISP provided email. Using something like Gmail/Yahoo/Hotmail or your own payed hosting is a much better idea and doesn't let this happen. :?
  3. The HJT log doesn't have anything that jumps out at me. Always a good idea to run regular scans anyway though, just to be safe if you have any doubts. Are there multiple walls between you and the router? Think about a straight line between your computer and the router. If it's passing through multiple walls, that could be degrading the signal a bit and may be what's causing the constant low/good signal quality. There may also be interference from cordless phones, the microwave and other things in the house. You can also try changing the channel the router broadcasts on in the config to see if that helps. Channels 1, 6 and 11, are recommended. In the end it very well could be just a weak signal from the router you have. If you can, try moving the router around the house to see if you get any kind of signal improvement.
  4. How about we all just stop complaining and pony up the cash for Tip.It to buy some Google Appliances. Will only cost a few hundred grand to cover the 3 million forum posts and Tip.It web content. Then NOBODY can complain that search is broke.
  5. That's max load on a single card though, which is rather easy to max out with current games. Distributing the load across 4 cards, even at the highest setting any game today can offer isn't going to result in all 4 cards being maxed out 100% of the time and drawing full power. Claiming you need an extra 800 watts on top of the max load on the cards to power the rest of the rig is ridiculous too. It doesn't really matter either way, if you're dumping enough money into a rig to set up quad video cards, you can afford to buy and/or mod a case to fit a second PSU to support that added power load, if it's even needed.
  6. Thanks for explaining yourself. :? "Not needed" generally means it's worthless and well, not needed. Seriously, why would you want to see which thread has the most views other than to giggle to yourself that you found it? On top of that, why would you want to see which has the most posts? Just so you can reply to it and say you posted in the largest thread? It's useless. "will never happen" would mean Albosky, being the hand behind the forum code, isn't writing it. Were those 6 words really THAT hard to understand?
  7. I don't have to dream. Mine got installed this fall. General specs from the article (since I can't find an exact spec sheet yet): 1150 servers total 2300 Dual Core Opterons (series unknown) Needless to say, 2 new industrial AC units and a massive diesel generator got installed outside the engineering building where's is now housed. Edit: Because I can't spell 'say' correctly the first time...
  8. I was going to reply to this earlier but got distracted. Good thing I did, lol. Looking up the specs of the integrated chip and the minimum requirements of the game, it should have no problems handling it, even being integrated. The specs I found for the game recommended DirectX 9b and 16 to 32mb of video memory, which is rather light even for integrated hardware. Seeing the reply about known game issues makes it sound even more like that would be the problem instead of the hardware. :?
  9. Been suggested many times. Been shot down just as many. There is no use for a cash mod on the forums other than wasting time and server resources.
  10. 1) Hitting your computer to make noises go away is NEVER a good idea. Sudden impacts to computer hardware breaks thing. 2) Next time you get a blue screen, write down the error code. It gives them for a reason. We can't help with much without knowing the error code. 3) Clicking noises from hard drives generally means the drive is damaged in some way. It could be fine, but it's fair warning that it could be on it's last leg.
  11. You can start by reading the stickies.
  12. If you are looking at machines running Vista, a Core Duo (or higher) and 2 Gb of RAM are recommended. The clock speed of the processor won't mean much if all you're doing is web browsing, RS and media type things (video, music, ect). If the machine is running XP anything for sale now (new machines) will run XP without issues with a gig of RAM. Most machines on the market now with a gig of RAM or more will give you a very noticeable improvement compared to what you have now. To give specific suggestions we would need to know what you plan on doing with the new machine.
  13. In the device manager (Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager), find the 'Floppy Disk Drives' dropdown. Open it, right click on the drive and disable it. It should disappear from the list of available drives (Assuming you're using XP). I usually do the same thing and actually hadn't since reinstalling a few weeks ago. Thanks for the reminder.
  14. You asked for a solution. Keeping Windows up to date and using the latest version of HJT is part of that solution. If you don't want to follow some of the simplest advice that leads up to actually fixing things, you're gonna hate what's coming when you actually start removing stuff. You could always just ignore blades advice and keep the spyware infested machine though... :uhh:
  15. It's an Oxford IP address (http://whois.domaintools.com/163.1.99.91) so it's most likely just a network appliance checking for any vulnerable machines or some other application that has to do with the university network.
  16. Or, you could just mark the changed items with a grey color and note that any grey item has been sold/removed/whatever. I do that all time when making edits to news posts and bug reports without much trouble.
  17. I do exactly that on a 2ghz Sempron with 768mb of ram and shared video eating into part of that. You by no means needs a dual core and 2gb of RAM. The only real difference is you need that hardware to run Vista at usable speeds. The uses you list are no where near close to using the full potential of a Core Duo + 2gb of RAM if you're running XP. Vista hardware requirements have made everything into a 'you need massive hardware to do simple tasks' argument, and it pisses me off.
  18. Allowing HTML in the profile is useless because it's off forum wide already. If BBcode was turned off the forums would be spitting out the raw tags instead of the blank box.
  19. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834147522 Same processor, slightly larger hard drive, same amount of RAM, $200 cheaper. I would definitely suggest browsing around Newegg for laptops. Their prices on most electronics are unbeatable for the most part. I'd also say you don't need a $1000 laptop if a 5 year old machine currently runs everything you need. Even a brand new $500 laptop bought today will keep up or exceed the machine you're currently using simply based on the age of the technology. Making us a list of what you currently use and what you would like to be able to do with the new laptop would help us quite a bit when it comes to makes suggestions.
  20. You seriously need to stop drinking the Apple Koolaid. :? Throwing out an option that costs a minimum of $1100 without the upgrades you list isn't exactly practical when the OP is looking at laptops in the $600-$800 range. Time Machine isn't exactly 'unbelievably advanced' either when compared to other backup utilities that are available (and have been for years). The only thing Apple did was make it Joe Sixpack compatible. As for the 'safe for RS' comment: RS is safe on any OS. It's the users stupidity that results in rs related harm. Additionally, the largest hard drive the Apple store lists as an option for any MacBook is 250gb (which costs $200-$300 to add). Your 'most advanced operating system out there yet' also has a glaring file move bug that results in permanent data loss. So much for 'most advanced'.
  21. Prices on online downloads don't mean a thing when the formats offered aren't compatible with what people actually want to use them with, are only a fraction of the quality of the pirated version, and still contain DRM that limits what you can do with what you payed for. Pricing downloads to match that of a physical cd is an additional ripoff because you don't have any physical media, extras or cover art. Yeah, it's a step, but how long did it take for them to finally take that step? Years now? All the while, they're still trying to play wack-a-mole with the BT trackers (and failing miserably) instead of just offering DRM free copies at the quality users want. It will take a massive shift in how the industry works to get rid of piracy, simply because the pirated copy is better than what the labels offer in every way.
  22. Correct. They don't support transfer from 2 to 3 during the betas but now that it's in the RC releases the converter is supplied and upgrades are supported, though they don't recommend running a production forum (like Tip.It or anything you remotely think is valuable) using the RC releases, because they could still contain bugs.
  23. Or you could do something like what I do with my LAN server and have them run on separate physical IP addresses like 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.0.2. Then you don't have to worry about the ports problem if it becomes an issue. You could also just bind more 192.168.* ips to the machine and use those instead of the localhost range (done via network connection properties).
  24. Do you by chance have javascript disabled? Fiddling around turning javascript on/off in Firefox results in the box totally disappearing along with some other weird side effects. :? Also, what browser are you using?
  25. This happens *any* time Norton is brought up as a problem. Some people chime in saying they've also had problems, Merc and others post saying they've never had a problem with it and the crap storm begins. Regardless of personal opinions, the OP specifically stated Norton is having issues displaying dialogs properly. If uninstalling it and replacing it gets rid of the problem and still protects the machine, so be it. Removing Norton generally DOES fix the problem when it's having a fit so that option shouldn't be thrown out the window just because some people havn't had any problems with it. I personally have. I know many people that also have. People need to except it and stop bashing the removal of it solely because they have never had a problem.
