  1. 1) I did not snap at you. I bluntly said you should not be reading and replying to these logs when you identified the RealPlayer updater as a bad item when it most definatly is not. If you can't go as far as looking up what you're tagging, you have no place helping clean up HJT logs when you can royally screw someones machine when doing so. Looking up both the full file path and just the realsched executable would have had Google return pages upon pages telling you it's legitamate. 2) Some of the missed items that stand out: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gl5rg61q] C:\Program Files\gl5rg61q\gl5rg61q[Caution] O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{ZN}] C:\WINDOWS\TISKY009[Caution] SKY009 O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [g4356cbvy63] C:\WINDOWS\g4356cbvy63 O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rkdwbufo] rundll32[Caution] "C:\Program Files\hahehkhc\nchgvcly.dll",Init O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [smgr] mgrs[Caution] O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PlaxoUpdate] C:\Program Files\Plaxo\2.12.1.1\PlaxoHelper[Caution] -a O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Qroamv] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\??sembly\d?xplore[Caution] These are just the blatantly obvious ones that need to be looked into. Even half asleep, throwing the executables into Google would tell you if it's worth looking into, which you failed to do. Even if someone does know what they're doing, they shouldn't be reading HJT logs when half asleep simply because of the extra damage you can do if you get it wrong.
  2. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched[Caution] is part of real player. That's why people that don't know what they're marking shouldn't be reading these logs. They end up breaking crap. There are many, many other suspicious entries that both repliers have failed to notice too. :wall: The first things you need to do is run Adaware, Spybot S&D and a virus scan using something like TrendMicro's Housecall online scanner. Do all of this in safe mode (press an hold F8 during boot, pick an option). That should clean up most of the problems. Spybot should clean up the 'trusted zone' issues found in the log with it's immunize feature. After doing that, post a new log for the people that know what they're doing to review.
  3. C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (This is for XP) (The hosts file doesn't have any extension on it but is a normal text file. It should contain a header explaining how to use it. If not, google will know.) There are several sites around that list a lot of ad servers in hosts file format but I don't know of any adult-content related blacklists like them.
  4. One bad egg shouldn't bring down privelages of the rest of the board. The bad topics were locked and will fall into the dead pages of the board naturally so the problem is resolved. If the community sees value in his other topics, they'll reply and discuss. If there's no value to it, it'll fall off page one and get ignored naturally by the users. Limiting posts because someone has a bunch of ideas all at once doesn't fix anything. If someone has several good ideas that are better suited to different threads, they should be able to post them like that and not hit an arbitrary wall because someone thinks it's needed. :? This belongs in Forum Updates & Suggestions too. :P Edit: Thanks a lot to whoever moved this for not noting it and making my wrong forum note look like it's was completely wrong...
  5. Virtual memory size on XP is changed in Control Panel > System > Advanced Tab > Performance "Settings" button > Advanced Tab. Virtual Memory settings are at the bottom. Changing this won't help much because it's effectively using your hard drive as RAM, which is slow as hell and won't help your game performance. As blade said, a RAM and video card upgrade are a must if you want to play either game at decent settings. A RAM upgrade will also make your virtual memory issues go away because it will no longer have to swap as much memory to disc.
  6. It'd be fairly easy to do. Would just get tied into the same code the runs that "Who's online" section on the index. It would add more sql queries to the code (which some will see as a bad thing), but it would be pretty easy for someone to write up. As easy as it is to implement, it would be a waste of time with phpBB3 right around the corner, which includes this feature by default.
  7. Would have helped if you had quoted the board description instead of just grabbing the second half of my reply to try and make a point. The Off-Topic description clearly says it's for everything not RS or AS related while the H&A forum is grouped within the RS category and is used for RS help. As I understand it Help & Advise was created for all RS related questions (which is why it's in the "RuneScape" category) because they were constantly being posted in other boards. Off-topic doesn't have that problem according to posts made (page 1 spanning 2 days, ect) so there is 0 need for a yet another forum when these questions would work fine within Off-Topic itself. Throwing more posts into the most used board here (H&A) isn't exactly going to address the problem either.
  8. Isn't the entire point of off-topic to collect threads that don't belong in boards that are already established? Looks like that would include just about anything you could ever want to ask about life related issues. :? If a mod is locking a thread just because it has to do with a 'real life' issue and it doesn't break any rules, a PM needs to be sent to get it unlocked.
  9. Your browser didn't properly render the page and instead just spit out the html as plain text. Try clearing your cache and cookies and try again.
  10. It's already very possible to contact an admin about a moderator not acting appropriately. Just send them a PM linking to the offending thread/post or explain what you think needs to be said. Setting out a monthly 'form' for people to fill out will make some feel like that they absolutely have to fill it out just because it's there, not because they have honest thoughts. It also brings up more work for the admins each month because they then have to go through and review the flood of good, bad, and spam that will get sent in by the population. There's also no guarantee that some users won't band together for the specific purpose of trashing some mod each month just for kicks and giggles. If there's a problem with a moderator, escalate it to the next level up the chain of command as needed till you hit an admin or a final answer. If the population ends up pointing out enough bad instances of how a mod is doing their job, it'll get fixed. There's no reason to create a monthly 'evaluation' when users can already voice concerns directly to those in charge as needed.
  11. Which is then made worthless by simply turning off javascript. :P Quite true. If you have no clue how to even start creating said login system, there is no way you are going to know how to expand, maintain and fix it if and when something goes wrong. You need to learn how to do this yourself so you aren't relying on a bunch of random people to keep your project secure. The game did. The login page, not quite. The crap java login they use now is nothing more than a shiny implementation of the standard POST login system most sites already do with basic html and server side checking (verify user/pass in database, redirects and so on). Jagex just added shiny crap to it for the stupid people that need help knowing what site they're typing their information into.
  12. Your screenshots show you downloading the online installer. Have you tried using the offline installer (same page, the 13.9 mb file) to avoid having to download extras while the installer works? On another note Windows 98 isn't 'a very old version of XP'. It's a completely different system. Anyway, support for Win98 was dropped completely in July of 2006, which means no new security updates for any new security problems found on top of getting dropped off support for a lot of software. It may sound like a broken record if you've heard it before, but it's time to upgrade to something newer. :P
  13. A "romance" forum is seriously the last thing you would ever want on a forum full of teenagers. Sports already belong in offtopic. What good is an 'armed forces' forum going to do on an RPG based forum full of teenagers? Justify your suggestions. Don't leave it to the rest of us to do it for you.
  14. I think it's safe to say the author of the thread doesn't care anymore, since he hasn't replied in over a month. Repeating the same methods over and over isn't going to bring him back.
  15. In addition to the other methods of 'previewing' that have been posted, you can also PM yourself a copy of the bbcode you want to use in your signature to see how it will appear. Preserves your current signature while you test and you can just delete the PMs to yourself when you're done.
  16. Matt nailed the answer to the overheating argument. If all you're doing is playing RS on it I wouldn't be all that worried about overheating (if that's the issue). Yes it can overheat if you push it too far, but there's a slim chance of that happening with just RS chunking away at it. Just keep it on a hard flat surface so that the fan can do it's job and cool it as needed and you shouldn't have any issues.
  17. Like Collective said, it's most likely hashed/encrypted before being sent from the machine to the login server. Last time I was playing with ethereal I logged into RS while capturing and didn't find my username or pass in the results (though I may have missed it somehow, was just goofing around with it). You should be fine either way. I seriously doubt someone that's gone so far as compromising a public university machine is after RS login details anyway. :P
  18. no they arnt, because if you make a good sig, not like yours, ones that take tallent, and time, it being 30KB is like [cabbage] one with real tallent is going to be alot bigger, so therefore to make it fit, you gonna have to lower quality, and thats shatty If you want to show off your abstract photoshop filter talent, post it in the gallery forum where it belongs then. Trash my sigs all you want, I honestly don't care, that's why they're small and simple. If you are going to go and trash my choice of signatures, the least you could do is have a signature that actually stands out from the crowd instead of just another abstract blob with more uninteresting text. If I wanted more of those I'd be wasting my time on DeviantArt. Signatures are not a billboard for your 'art', no matter how much you want it to be.
  19. Yes it's safe. You can either install it using the window that poped up when you tried loading RS or you can install it directly from the Sun website. You should probably just skip it and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2 (4th option down the page) instead of upgrading to an older version. Version 6 update 2 is the latest.
  20. Sunbird (the Mozilla calendar app) has settable alarms for events. I don't know how well they work since I don't use them, but the option is there. The program is still only at version 0.5 so there are still bugs being worked out but it may do what you're looking for. Edit: You should be able to minimize it to the tray using an extension. It doesn't have the option to by default.
  21. Does using the java client let you connect at all? It most likely won't if it's some kind of firewall problem blocking port 6667. I'm out of ideas beyond that. It still sounds like a firewall problem of some kind but I can't think of anything else to do to troubleshoot it anymore. :?
  22. I can't really comment on the hosts (just a quick reply, no time to convert UK to US currency) but the Linux/Windows choice doesn't really matter. It's up to what the host offers. PHP/ASP will run on both platforms, as well as mySQL. AJAX is nothing more than javascript talking to the server in some form, so that is also platform independent. It really depends on what you need and what the host offers. If you just need PHP and mysql, it doesn't matter. Linux web servers will generally be more stable and give better performance in the general web host area though.
  23. We already have 49 smilies (51 if you count the thumb buttons on the 'view more' window). In those 51 you can express just about every emotion you could ever want to in a forum post. The contest is a good idea but we really don't need them at this point. :? There's also the fact the board will be moving to phpBB 3 in the future, which will most likely mean upgrading to the new redesigned smilies that match the new Pro Silver skin.
  24. I never said it was cheaper, for a business venture or personal use. Yes the cost of ink and paper is more, but that's what happens when you aren't buying ink by the gallon and paper in bulk. He's complaining about printing photos at home, so I pointed out what I've used and what I'm very happy with. We use that exact same printer for personal photo's as well, so it being used for a small business makes little difference. He asked for opinions on printing your own photos, not what you think is the best professional print shop to take your SD card to.
  25. Make me #3 on the disagree side. We have a Canon Pixma ip6000D (I think that's the model, it's since been revised a few times) printer at my dad's that we use for on-site photo printing at various events that we then sell right there on the spot. Printing on photo paper using photo quality still yields some 40+ 4x6's in addition to quite a few 8.5x11 prints before it starts complaining about ink. It does a very good job of using every drop of ink it can in the cartridge before forcing you to replace it. We generally get another 10 to 15 prints out of it after it starts warning about low ink before it demands a replacement. The key is finding a printer that uses separate color cartridges (Example - this is the black we buy for our printer) instead of those cheesy all in one tanks that come with the print head built into them. Much easier to deal with low ink levels and you get a lot more prints out of your tanks because you aren't replacing the entire set because one color is dead. You don't have the insane costs of replacing the print head each time you buy a new cartridge too.
