Ive personally tried both methods (melee prayer with mage def gear and mage def prayer with melee def gear) And i'm only lvl 89 defence but i found both methods pretty equal in the damage i would take. Because of this i would think that at 99 defence, you could maybe manage an extra kill per trip with melee defence gear, not a certainty but it may be do-able. i would suggest veracs skirt for the prayer bonus aswell if you do this.
