Battlefield Discussion Thread
Yea, I appreciate it, but those forums are similar to the RSOF in quality. :P And the majority of them are complaining about Recon being a useless class. And I'm like wow, really, learn to play objective work as a Recon. It only takes one scope for every eight players in a game to change the direction of the game. I am disappointed in how people think of any of these classes being useless/no purpose.

Does anyone know any good fansites dedicated to BC2 or Battlefield games in general? Can't seem to find any on Google, nor are people apparently knowledgeable in-game. :/

Nintendo.
I'd have to disagree. Nintendo has the female market locked down. Not the gamer females, but definitely the casual female, who you wouldn't expect to own a handheld or console. I've been surprised so many times in the past year when a female I know pops out their DS or they talk about playing some mindless game on their Wii. And I only need a new Zelda title to wipe the dust off of my Wii. I'm pretty sure I'm wrapped around their marketing anyways. I think I bought the Wii originally because of Twilight Princess and the motion controller. Oh and SSBB was another incentive. If they released more Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid, Zelda and more clever thinking games revolved around Mario, I'd still be playing on the Wii - but they don't.

Protip: Camp random spots. All of the beginner weapons are fairly useful though. Perhaps adjusting your play style more dynamically will yield better results. Or if you have a good headset all you really need to do is listen for shots, locate vehicle movements and watch the kill messages, and you should be able to estimate where everyone is (as well as be aware of other indicators). So you can either stay clear or ninja your way to kills. Basic tips but yea. Unlocked the GOL. I must say quickscoping CQs I thought was going to be a pain with my impression of the M24. With the GOL however, it is much quicker to switch to a pistol and not to mention I can actually move sideways with the GOL at CQ and still get a hit off. I fail at longer distances though.

An Alfred Hitchcock centric Halloween would be nice. Or even a collaboration of horror/psychological horror filmmakers would be intense.

Nintendo.
If it were a new system as you say, it would be wiser for their marketing strategy to name it something different so people don't get the initial reaction of "Another DS model? I just bought the last two...Too many times, I'll wait till their next generation one...etc,". However, if its hardware is upgraded by a bit, then it could take the place of their next handheld device. In my opinion, the next handheld devices from Sony & Nintendo are going to be aimed at competing directly with mobile phones. If Sony/Nintendo released a new handheld device that didn't compete with mobile phone's by say 2012, then the devices will be doomed. Mobile phones are going to overthrow 'game-only devices' by 2012 or 2013 for sure. Do you really want to carry a phone, which is capable of the games you like, and a handheld device? I don't think the majority do. The next handheld devices from Sony/Nintendo should be competing or trying to change their devices entirely in order to stay alive against mobile phones. Mobile phones will (is) be the new platform to produce games on. That entire casual gamer audience that Nintendo was after with the Wii and which has caused Farmville to be so popular is where the future is headed. There's a TED talk somewhere that talks about why this is and where game design is going to go in that you'll be earning points for doing daily routines in your life, which can later be compared on leaderboards, so that you'll buy/use a product to gain points to brag about it or showoff to friends. That was the centric idea behind the video, I can't find it on TED, which I'm fairly upset about. But anyways if handheld devices don't adapt to mobile phones for gaming and other uses, they're going to fall flat on their face. Which is why I think Nintendo is just milking the DS as much as they can before they release their next handheld device to compete with mobile phones or innovate something to stay alive longer. Convergence of technology will always take place, example is the iPhone. Previously the laptop, mini-van and almost anything else that brings so many functions and uses together for that one 'sweet spot' in the market of that item. The iPhone is virtually 'everything' that technology is and it offers 'everything'. This is convergence. http://en.wikipedia....cal_convergence Sorta explains it, but it is the bringing together of separate technology into one piece of technology. This is why laptops are doomed to fail, especially netbooks. You won't need a keyboard when you have voice, and you won't have to worry about having enough power when hardware booms right by software capabilities for practical programs. Any programs utilizing multiple cores yet properly? No? Oh, what about that Ion platform? Yea, definitely the concept of where things are headed. It just seems like Nintendo would be idiots to make this their next big device. To me it seems more like an experimental concept being put to a real world test. Asking themselves, will 3D gaming and the concepts created or brought to consumers be a worthwhile expenditure in the future? Or are they cashing in on the 3D rave? Are they putting 3D to the real test here to see if it will just be a blow over?

Shattered Heart Discussion
A lot of this discussion just makes me wonder what type of random algorithm Jagex is using in Runescape. I have to wonder if they're using the same algorithm with slight modifications for each skill or game play feature, or if they're using completely different random algorithms for every case where a random is needed. I don't think it would be that hard to figure out if they're using the same algorithm but just 'modded' or fit certain skills/features in the game, though it would be easier to prove if they were using multiple algorithms if they weren't heavily fine-tuned. Figuring this out would enable players to deduce a large array of useful information like what trees to cut and when or where based on ratios, places to fish and when, and how to manipulate situations to your advantage further. Testing would only need 20 individuals doing whatever controlled task, like fishing in 3 different fishing locations. Things to test would be to see if fish collection rates +/-, increases fishing area removal/refresh rates, and the types of fish you receive when you do 'catch' a fish. For woodcutting it is relatively the same: log collection rate +/-, tree respawn rates +/-, tree depletion rates +/-. Knowing these rates will lead you to an algorithm, or even just general knowledge on what trees to really cut if there's 3 guys on one tree and 5 guys on the other. Should you try to cut the tree with less players in hopes the tree provides you with more logs, or would it be more wise to chop the tree with more people because in the long-term it'll yield faster refresh rates and thus a longer overall time of 'chopping' the tree down, which may increase your overall chance of receiving wood then if you were to chop a tree that provided a higher instant chance of logs but did not respawn as fast. Logically or reasonably you'd go for the tree with less people, but perhaps there's cracks in these numbers to exploit.

Halo Discussion thread
The slight chance of Microsoft releasing Reach on PC is larger than the chance they would have released Halo 3 on PC on release. Basically, the best we can hope for is a PC release seven months after the Console release. The reason why this may be true is because those who want to play Halo have already bought an Xbox, so now it wouldn't be as detrimental to release it on the PC, as the Halo market on the consoles may have been reached enough. Then again I am still not going to complain that much if it isn't released on the PC. It would be nice, but meh. Halo: Reach will probably be a top 3 game of the year.

Portal 2 anounced
It's not fan made, there is a pretty obvious connection. The fan made part is that Valve is going to converge the two games into one game. What is not fan made is that the events in Half Life & Portal are contained in the same universe but not necessarily at the same time. This is found from clues found in the game (and hinted/directly said in interviews with Valve). My post did not contain an 'it', it contained multiple "its', so if you want to refine your post, please be specific in which it you're referring to, thanks - for your convenience I re-explained myself more bluntly.

Portal 2 anounced
The rumor of them merging Portal 2 and Half Life storylines is more fanmade than anything else. The universe is the same for each storyline but the events occur at different times. Thus, I am highly doubting complete cross between the two, but more or less a few mentions like the boat. Either way the code they updated the game with a week ago, was just pure insane fun trying to decipher. I got pretty far into it until I saw that you needed HyperTerminal and a modem to do the BBS phone line. That deterred me from finishing.

03-Mar-10 Changes to HP Skill, Shattered Heart, RuneScape Lobby/Login Changes, Success at Smelting Iron
The benefits of the change from HP to LP is giving benefits to both the players and Jagex. The opportunities such a change with the skill brings is magnificently awesome and will impact your future gaming a ton. I would be more grateful than be irritated for the next 5 hours of in-game time you spend getting used to the update. It is just overall so much better and practical in every aspect of game design and even in player comfort and simplicity. As well, this could be a sign of the combat system revamp that I am desperately hoping is a complete redesign of combat in Runescape, as this game is going to fall on itself from the current combat system. In my opinion the current combat system is just feeding the economic problems and is holding Jagex back from releasing some new amazing content on a regular basis - and may have even caused previous updates to be hindered.

HTML 5
It has larger bandwidth though or so I have been informed. Source: http://arstechnica.c...odec-debate.ars If you read the section "Undesirable Middle Ground", in that article, that sounds like the best solution if only everyone were to work towards that solution and not oppose it. In all honesty it just sounds like those that are calling Theora 'good' and a 'solution' are trying to promote their own products or agendas, while those that say it is relatively 'inefficient' are also trying to protect their own products and agendas. Hence the lack of actual comparisons between the two formats and to other formats. The current comparison tests between the two formats are inconclusive and just look mishandled.

Browser of choice?
I install add-ons for FireFox and it just gets so much slower at start-up and for loading times. Even simple add-ons slow FF down considerably. If I look at a default FireFox release and a default Chrome release, I just have to pick Chrome. I use Flash way too much in my browsing that if I crash, I don't want to waste time restarting the entire browser or waiting for it to respond or whatever. With Chrome, I close the tab. Problem solved. FireFox I either get lucky with it resolving itself, or the browser crashes and takes its time closing. Chrome for speed & user friendliness. Though Opera on the other hand...that would be my second choice over Chrome. Its got everything I want out of FireFox, but without bloating add-ons, yet it doesn't pack the speed that Chrome renders pages in. If Opera got faster in real world situations, I'd probably be using it. Then again Chrome is just responsive and not bloated. Chrome is getting add-ons though. The ones I have now (Translator & Gmail) haven't slowed Chrome down at all, while the same add-ons for FF have slowed FF down significantly. Perhaps future add-ons for Chrome will have the same dragging effect, but I think add-on standards are higher for Chrome than FF, or plan to be? I read this on their blog at some point. Chrome. <3

Game crashes
I logged onto the game for the lulz of it like three days ago and the game crashes for me in HD. I had never thought I'd experience a crash with Runescape, let alone consistent crashes. I guess it is one of the fulfillments for Jagex to become a well known company. :P I really don't need a solution as I don't play the game, but I am posting to say that there appears to be a lot of users who are experiencing crashes in HD.

Google Buzz
Might be useful for businesses (like Wave...), but for a casual social networking user, there's really no innovation or point here. All Google is doing is covering their bases in the cloud world. Facebook still dominates in every aspect for social networking. There is no need for any other medium. Twitter is pointless in comparison to Facebook. Anything compared to Facebook is relatively pointless for casual social networking.

HTML 5
With HTML5 the browsers are using a different format or codec than the .swf or flash codec/format. Flash is CPU heavy (hence why you won't be able to play two 720p videos at once with most CPUs) and is generally restricted to the CPU. It also carries a license and isn't open source and really isn't updated with things it needs to continue to be a viable technology on the internet. With HTML5 though all browsers would have a single codec or a set of codecs to play videos or other media with. This codec would be open sourced, not licensed like flash and could be improved much more specifically or gradually. As well, such a codec could be coded to work with more than just the CPU, and not be as resource intensive as flash is altogether. With better or improved coding such a codec could also be improved to play more than just one HD video on any CPU, or much more realtime options could be coded into the codec for a more flexible experience. Things like editing a video online wouldn't be hard to code as it is with Flash. There's a larger amount of tools to use too for a quicker development than just the Flash IDE. Though there are a lot of negatives as well, like finding a codec that has the ability & potential to perform better than Flash but also not to take up loads of bandwidth.

HTML 5
Read this article if you want an insight: http://gizmodo.com/5...ve-the-internet Basic knowledge is just written out in the article until you get to the 'Managing Expectations' part. I would say the issues they bring up in this section is what you should pay attention to, as this is what HTML5 was or has been hoping to accomplish, yet some of the 'facts' they bring up aren't completely accurate even if they have some validity. Basically it is expanding on the entire 'one unified standard' for browsers that web developers have wanted for a very long time. At least that is how I've interpreted it, though if Microsoft Silverlight continues to be as successful as it has been, HTML5/FLASH will expire relatively quickly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silverlight

Your language of choice
LOL. I'm well developed with C#, but it is not a language of choice. I know a broad range of the usual web languages. JAVA is what I plan to get into in the future and would be my preferred language.

Introduction to Programming & Programming Languages
If you want to learn why or how programming languages work, as well as the fundamentals of any language (like the data types, syntax...etc) or you don't know where exactly you want to begin with, with what language or whatnot, then this can give you an idea: http://academicearth.org/lectures/intro-to-comp-sci-goals It explains the basic principles of programming. As well, if you follow any of the other lectures, it does expand your ability to think properly. Course, Examples & Lectures are in Python. I think this will be useful to beginners since when I first learned programming I was only told what the syntax was for, not why it was there. Which can make learning everything so much easier.

The iPad
Needs: - Webcam - USB Ports - Converter Failure - Other Ports... - Ability To Run 3 Programs Or More (Word, Browser, ???) - 128GB Model under $900 - Flash/I mean, the plugin failure in the demo...? C'mon flash. I'd consider buying it if it had these features. Current version I'd just buy a netbook for $300 or a 15" laptop for $600. This iPad or tablet should be the thing to kill laptops, not netbooks. Just saying.

Combat Arms - 100% Free FPS - Review, Pictures & Videos
I am so ashamed I ever made this thread. There's FREE aimbot, chams and a host of other ridiculous amount of cheats for this game. For instance, there's a cheat where if you pick up an OPK'ers gun then you get to OPK (OPK means shooting through walls), or the one where you can spawn ten instances of yourself and run around shooting ten guns for each of your instance. These cheats with the regular aimbots and wallhacks is just disgusting. Game is really fun, except for when you encounter the 80% of the community that cheats. The game publisher, "Nexon" completely fails at managing this game. If you somehow are able to tolerate this game, you should join and team and see how well you do @ WOGL. Still, game is just like WarRock but worse. When you realize how bad CA is A.V.A seems to be a far better FREE FPS than this. Though it's using the unreal engine so you may not be able to play it*. @Urbex: Don't tell me you think Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is a good game when you say Mw2 is overrated?

Windows 7 and Vista "God Mode"
Your avatar made me remember the truth is out there. I'm thinking this would be great when you just get a PC, or need to reset almost everything back to an original or preferred state. It's got a lot of uses either way.

Left 4 Dead
Some dude made a fully working Left 4 Dead 8-Bit game. You can download it here. Here's a video of it: Here's Kotaku's take on it: Unofficial 8-Bit Left 4 Dead Now Available - Left 4 Dead - Kotaku I found it to be pretty fun for awhile. Some here may enjoy it.
