04-12-12 - The Brink of Extinction - Grandmaster Quest

' I did it with Verac armor and zamorak spear (even more welfare than you), took me several tries and my ovl doses, but once I found the strategy it was a walkover (I ate less than 10 rocktails on my successful try, and I took my sweet time killing the ranger). Nor did I use Ice magic, but my Backhand ability seem to have worked all the time without fail. Just drag him to the other side of the room and pay attention to him only when you drop the starting ranger, the rest is just easy, Melee deflect took care of defense for me. Watch your prayer, watch the floor, kill the ranger, stun him when he starts to walk away or Autocast Ice magic, that's it. -
If you are on ancients though, I'd say wand is a better option, since most of the time you are on ancients are either to AoE or use their secondary effects. More auto attacks = more chances of effects going off, especially for Ice. Assuming of course effects are not actually nerfed by using a wand instead of using a staff

I didnt use rejuvinate, i opted not to use a shield as I thought it was race against time, but the first ranger add was pretty much the game changer, didnt even eat half of my inv by the end (i was using 2h) -

12 shards per bar 1 bar each for gloves and boots 2 bars for each of the 3 helm 3 bars for kite shield/legs/skirt 5 for plate. Assuming you only make what you need, you need 19 bars minumum, which makes it 228 shards required. -

Where did you find the sword of Absolutely Guaranteed To Hit Every Time No Matter What? I'm using an autoattack that stuns with maxed out accuracy and even I can't stop him healing reliably. I used Z spear Stun will always work on him from what I can see, you just have to get to him before he gets on that sqaure. A good tactic i have found is to lure him to the opposite end of the room so he will take longer to get there. And... once you kill the sole ranger and melee starts to spawn, IGNORE them, they will not do enough damage to you to warrant distracting yourself from the boss. Did i mention he drains prayer? -

Downed him! I think the trick is to kill the very first ranger he spawns before he spawns anymore, afterwards he will spawn melee adds, thats where your deflect/prot comes in handy, you need to stun him continuously after knocking him down to half health, he will go to the lava flow to heal every 15 seconds (exactly the length of a stun cooldown), you MUST have this stun on your action bar, and DO NOT use it on anything else. If you manage to let him get to the lava fountain, he will heal to full health, and the fight is basically over for you. -

I nearly got him down once, but I ran out of food... That boss is hard to hit as hell.... Anyone miss their darts right about now? -
If you are going to use abilities, then you might as well use 2Handers, there are VERY few abilities that actually uses damage from both weapons, and only 1 of which (strictly 2, but both share CD, so practically only 1) is a basic ability, and that is on a 10s CD, rest of the time you will be spamming 3s/5s abilities, which DW are far inferior at compared to 2H. Had Havoc/Decimate either not shared CD or are shorter CDs, I would have probably leaned towards using abilities too, but for now, 2h are superior than DW if you are going to use abilities.

Cls/Cls have higher DPS, but Vine Whip/EEE is second. CLS/EEE is a bad idea because CLS slows down EEE and results in fewer hits from EEE (and thus less healing) and lower DPS. Chaotic crossbow is only as good as the bolt you are willing to use, and is generally only used for bossing due to its special bolts, for slaying, I recommend either Black Sally or Karil Crossbow (Black sally wins by miles due to its ridiculously cheap ammo and no degrade). Chaotic maul have T75 counter part Saradomin sword, given the price of the GE mid (1.6M last time i checked), if you are going to use it to slay, Sara sword would be cheaper in the long run (it is already cheaper than the maul before you even use the maul if you repair it before first use, unless of course you are using tokens). Verac Flail and Torag hammers are inferior still (only t70), but the weapons themselves are dirt cheap, and even cheaper upkeep cost than Maul. My weapon of choice, as a first weapon, will lean towards a Rapier, since you dont have many 1h stab choices, since the next best choice is korasi's sword, some 15 tiers behind.

Karil seems a lot of effort for dual wielding chaotics I use Z Spear, with 0 adrenaline, he is usually dead by the time I use my first threshold, namely assault: Backhand -> Punish -> Slice -> Severe -> Slice -> Punish -> Assault -> dead karil. I use Thesholds to time my brothers, if the brother isn't consistently either dead or very near death after I use my first threshold ability, then I think its too slow. I never get a chance to build that much adrenaline on each brother, they die long before that, or else I started with some adrenaline.

From what can see, some AoE attacks hit anyone caught within the area, regardless of whether they are engaged in combat with you or not, but some AoE attacks do not damage unless they are already in a combat with you. My example would be Ricochet Vs. Bombardment, the former hits anything within a certain range of the target, the latter only if they are in combat with you. At least it's what it appeared to me, here is why: 1. At the dark beasts, when I had aggro of several, my bombardment was able to hit quite a large radius , something probably bigger than 5x5 considering the size of DBs 2. At Ahrim, when there is someone else with me with their Ahrim out, I use Ricochet, I get a message saying that someone is already attacking that. I do not get that message when I use bombardment, even when they are right on top of each other. 3. In the tunnels, my ricochet goes all the way around the room, but my bombardment never hit anyone within the room for me unless I used ricochet first.

first: you are not Impacting the melee brothers and moving away from them, and thus taking damage unnecessarily. Secondly: You are using chaotic maul, but Zamorak spear works just as well without needing the repair cost of the maul. Just as in your vid, Karil usually dies to assault with a spear
-
Actually I argue that shields dramatically slows down kills because of the lower accuracy from wands, with the correct timing, you can almost entirely avoid taking damage from the brothers, which eliminates the need and the use of any shield completely, the lower accuracy from lower weapons will dramatically slow down kills, because the melee brothers are not pushovers anymore. I use on average less than 1 monkfish per 5 trips, and mostly is due to me not turning on Deflect melee when my impact splashed.

You dont actually need to cast dedicated snare spells to snare, Impact comes with its own snare, and it isnt shown in its tooltips. My setup: Common: Barrow Gloves Fury Ardy Cape 3 Gano boots RoW Melee: Z Spear Verac Helm/chest/legs Mage: Polypore Akrisae Helm/Chest/legs Range: Crystal bow Karil helm/Chest/legs. Prayers i use: All 3 95 curses depending what I am using Soul Split I get from Dharok to looting chest in 1 single ovl dose usually without it expiring, and brothers die, or are close to dead by the time i use my first threshold ability, Karil and Ahrim are especially vulnerable to Assault and Rapid Fire respectively Edit: I forgot to mention that my run speed was skipping Akrisae and killing torag instead.

Finally, when you are in combat, I believe it is always your combat level that is displayed.

I'd love to see a screenshot of "Fullbuster the Grey" casting ice barrage... (it's a character from the anime Fairy Tail, there is a Grey Fullbuster character that uses Ice as his magic)

Maybe you could try using a Shield bow with Dragonbane arrows and using Resonance and the other ability which I cannot remember the name? (One is a basic that heals you for the next attack done in 6 seconds, the other is for every hit you do in 10 seconds, it reduces the CD of the healing ability by 3s).

Also note that if you spam click on Nex when she spawns (she only initially spawns when there is someone in the room with her), eventually you will throw a dart at her before she even attacks, so you will not take any damage whatsoever, though bring some food just in case. IF you get only brews/super res drops, its normal...

Alternatively you can press the " * " key on top of your numpad

I work in complete opposite of your thinking. I hate heavy armor for what it is worth, there are no useful perks in Heavy armor tree before you get to the weightless armor perk, while you need less perks to get it in Light armor and the perks are more useful (Stamina regen is one such example). Light armor makes the game harder up until you start pumping up your armor skills and smithing, in which the Light armor slowly overtakes heavy armor until they reach the cap. I can easily reach the armor cap with Dragonscale armor if I had bothered with leveling alchemy, but I am very few points behind so I am not fussed about it. And lastly, there is nothing you can do in Heavy armor that you can't do without. The only thing that I lose by going the left is I lose out on Daedric arrows, which are more powerful than Glass arrows, but IMO thats not much to lose because I find Daedric bloody impossible to get. Oh, I was cheapskate and used only iron to get my smithing to 100 anyway, it wasn't very long. I found doing Thieves guild and unlocking all fences really help with unloading wears, since the fence in Markath is very close to the anvil (I think it's Markath, the one that rebel who I cannot remember his name is based in).
-
I know this might be a bit late, but if one has Dawnguard installed, I highly recommend going the left side of the Smithing tree than the right side, for sneaky characters (or anyone else really). Dragon parts are MUCH MUCH easier to come by (you can make Dragon bows and arrows in Dawnguard) than Daedric. I have had enough bones and scales to make me 3 sets of dragon armor and 4-5 sets of weapons without even hunting for them or completing the main line. I have yet to find enough Daedre hearts to make even 1 set of armor. Also, light armor perks are more suited to sneaking, which Daedric lacks, they are heavy armor.

Yep, me too, hard treks were no harder than easy treks. The only thing that was capable of hurting me was Tentacles, and they dont attack NPCs. Everything else couldn't even touch my NPCs unless I afk'ed for about 5 mins

Right now it's hard to buy any wand better than Grifolic without spending literally millions

Mainhand and off hand refer to what hand they go into. Mainhand does twice as much damage as your off hand, and most of the time abilities only use the weapon damage in your main hand. OH is rather useless on its own unless you have the MH to go with it. At the moment, a 2h is better for abilities, dual wield for Momentum. For more information, look up Dual Wielding in any eoc guide
