April 2, 200719 yr How do you feel about the Queen of England and the Royal Family as a whole? Do you think she's a symbol of Britain and an important figure, or do you think she is a complete waste of time and money and that Britain has it's own sufficient enough (though lacking) government. BTW you can also discuss other Royal Families as well, Norway, Sweden, etc. So you can use this as general Royal Family thread. Me doing staff.
April 2, 200719 yr I think she's a very important and leading figurehead for the UK. I like her, she's worked incredibly hard and is a very good role model for us as a country. The rest of the royal family are all mostly wasters, but whatever. "Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"
April 2, 200719 yr I agree with assassin there. The Queen is important. She's a nice lady, and a good figurehead for the country. However I dislike the royal family as a whole for the simple reason they're mostly sponging, cheating liars. (I don't believe that whichever one of them it was who went to Iraq will ever have to do any hard work).
April 2, 200719 yr In my opinion, the queen doesnt have too much pwer over the country, she is more of a...Representitive of the goverment, everyone looks up to her, whilst the goverment are really behind taxes...laws etc etc PLAYER QUEST: The Spoils of War

April 2, 200719 yr We were talking about this in World Civilization today :-w . I think she's more of a figure head or tradition more than an importance. She really has little influence over the country. If England feels the need to maintain a Monarch as a tradition, power to them. However, the money she spends on the palace and stuff could be better used.
April 2, 200719 yr If she has pretty much no power, then I don't see the problem. I just wish there was a daughter somewhere in there so I could, like...Be a king n' stuff. No princess can resist me. None! Muhahahha. The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past. - Me!

No wonder I haven't heard of her. Icky. I was talking more along the lines of a Diana/Charles bi-product. Man, that would be a smokin' Princess, I bet. ...Oh. Anyways. April 2, 200719 yr I love our Queen. The Royal family is a symbol of the United Kingdom's past greatness and incredible achievements. It's a tradition that should be carried on for as long as the United Kingdom exists! You don't hear people shouting "let's scrap Xmas, since most people have forgotten it's true meaning", or have people shout "Let's scrap Independence Day, since it's about something that happened long ago". The Royal family is an ancient tradition, a symbol and an icon... Her Majesty is one of the many things that make me proud to be British, and I pray that it's something that's never taken away from me (since so many of my other British rights already have).
April 2, 200719 yr I don't know.. I don't particularly like the Royal Family for a few reasons. They haven't worked hard for the position they are in. They were simply born into it, It just doesn't make sense. The King or Queen could be the biggest marshmallow you've ever seen but still be appointed for King or Queen, Because there is no one else to reign. Plus, They are massively overpaid. Way to much, It's ridiculous. But, I don't know that much about them, So that's just my opinion for now, I'll follow this thread and maybe learn something. My dA account..retired, as of the 1st January 2008.
April 2, 200719 yr Well I think there is no point in having a Monarchy in UK and I'll explain why. Firstly she has no real power - so therefore position holds no purpose in a modern democracy. She, and her large extended family, are given literally millions of pounds every year as well as expenses (for things such as private air travel, staff for her palaces etc.) which also run into millions - This money could be spent on much more worthwhile things like hospitals, schools, the police force etc. This huge waste of money is reflected in the fact that the Queen is regularly listed as one of the top 10 richest women in the world. Monarchy has no place in a civilised democracy & in my opinion merely serves as a reminder of a far more oppressive age. ----------------------------- brings a hell of a lot of tourisim into the UK I here this argument time & time again but yet I'm never satisfied with it. When visitors come to UK (& specifically the Greater London area) do they ever actually meet the Queen or the Royal family? It's safe to say it's a rare occurance. Now if the Queen was removed tommorrow, that wouldn't remove all historical sites that are currently (or have previously been) associated with the Monarchy - Buckingham Palace, The Houses of Parliament & The Tower of London would all still stand & would all still be visited by tourists every year. My constant counter to this tourism point would be the fact that France got rid of their Monarchy but people still visit France in huge numbers. People still go to the Arc de Triomphe, Grand Palais, Champs-ÃÆÃââââ¬Ã°lysÃÆÃâÃâées, & The Palance of Versailles eventhough there is no Monarchy is France. Infact Paris is one of the biggest tourist hot spots in the world. He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. - Aeschylus (525 BC - 456 BC)
April 2, 200719 yr Saying the Queen has no power is absolute BS She has the overall say...If the prime minister or govement went crazy and started to bring in crazy laws..she could override it Queen of england should be an idol to everyone...she still going at 81....If you look at her daily schedule its insane Rest of the family...well they better get their acts together...espiecelly charles...hope to god he dosent become king I think William would make a good king...as for harry will hes a bit of a rebel
April 2, 200719 yr She does have the final approval on all laws, however all that is required is her signature. Usually she doesn't even write that herself either and someone does it for her. Her role in law has been described as a rubber stamping excercise. With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.
April 2, 200719 yr Saying the Queen has no power is absolute BS She has the overall say...If the prime minister or govement went crazy and started to bring in crazy laws..she could override it Those are purely ceremonial powers and not real powers. It's merely a convention that the monarch has to put laws into effect, just like it's merely convention for the newly elected Prime Minister to ask if he/she can form the govenment. April 3, 200719 yr Sorry if this is offensive but isn't the whole Royal Family inbred from back in the old days where to be royal you have to breed with other royal families? And they were the only royal family in England or something? ^Sir Jem 05-The Bunny Drinking Blog?^ Click it!

They were simply born into it, It just doesn't make sense. Actually the Queen has worked incredibly hard in her current position, often to the point of neglecting her own family. How many people are still working full days at 81 and will be until their death? Like I said, the rest not so much, but the Queen certainly works hard. Besides, she's really not payed that much, most of her wealth is tied up in art and other assets. It costs something like 52p for each taxpayer in the UK to support the royal family. Oh cmon, the Queen hasn't worked a day in her life. According to your figure of 52p a year thats several hundred million pounds a year that comes into for the Royal family. She is waited on hand and foot and has several palaces. Also don't tell me your idea of working is driving around waving at people, signing documents and being handed flowers all the time. My personal opinion of the Royal family is that they should be got rid of. Britain as a democracy should not be promoting a 'Royal' bloodline, sure there are flaws in the democracy but this is one that could easily be got rid of. Most of the sensible(lol) countries got rid of their monarchy centuries ago.

April 3, 200719 yr Ahhh the Monarchy. A fiercely ongoing discussion in my country, Belgium. The country is so divided as it is, and the Monarchy is often seen as the glue that sticks the two parts (Flanders and Wallonia) together. But the Flemish separatists (not all Flemish people!!) want to abolish the monarchy, the Walloons are more inclined to keep it. It's a very complicated situation here, very interesting though. We had quite a bit of drama in the monarchy. Leopold II and his reign in congo, Leopold III who was discredited after the second World War, Albert I who was a valiant warrior in WW I, Boudewijn who had a "special" bond with his stepmother... Passion, murder, drama! It's all there! I myself don't wish the monarchy gone, but I'm not exactly captivated by their (current) lives either.
April 3, 200719 yr Haha, do you actually have any idea what you're talking about? Nice reply, care to elaborate? Like providing some evidence. Unless you're about to tell me you're actually a personal friend of the Queen and you know the in's and out's of her itinery?
