What's up with randoms?

jagex may have increased the frequency of randoms, but that doesnt mean that they are random. yesterday in about an hour i got a strange box and an evil twin. i havent been playing very regularly, but i'v only had one other random in the last couple months

Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.

Random events totally are not random!

They're designed as an anti-botting mechanism, and since most bots are for things like

Woodcutting, Mining, Fishing, etc, the frequency of random events will greatly increase

when you're doing that sort of thing. If you just stand still and don't move a cell, you wont

get any randoms! Thus, they are not random! They're only initiated when you perform

certain actions!

:shame: How untrue.

You forget in a java game, idle time is an action, while it may not sound like it at first. If you stand in one spot you actually get quite a bit of randoms.

Yes they are also triggered by events, but even standing still IS an event. Its just some events trigger more than others which is why it appears to only happen certain times.

Basically you have 2 classes of random events:

A) Triggered Random events

B) Random-Random Events

A) These events are set off by certain actions. Some actions have a higher % to trigger an event to happen.

B) Random-Randoms are set by a timer, and can happen, anytime, anywhere. Bascailly, a Javascript timer picks a random name from the online players list and gives them a random. Then 1-2 seconds later picks another name from the list and so on..

It is actually possible for these 2 types to overlap, so you can actually get 2 randoms at the same time, (Eg, a Random-Random triggers a Triggered Random event). I have seen this happen before, but the odds are so slim its almost non-existant.

So YES, randoms ARE random, but also influenced by what you do.

Part II) The Wilderness-Random Mass Explination

Using this theroy you can also show why the wilderness random-pile exists.

If you dont know what a wilderness random pile is refer to his picture:

spamca0.gif

So what happens? Basically what you see is started by either A or B, the first random starts, then a second is triggered by the neraby event. Then because the nearby event increases to 2 events, a 3rd and 4th person gets a random, now you have 4 events, more and more people get randoms until they start to pile, 60+ events and so on, which gives RuneScape 60 chances to spit out a random.

Idle time actually increases the chances to spit out a random. Somewhere in Jagex's formula. The exact values arnt know, but it appears to be a value, which is why you see randoms such as this.

Ever notice you get a random at almost the exact same time as a person near you? Thats because of this same sort of idea.

You only get Randoms if you click on the (same tree, same fishing spot, same hunter trap, etc.)

This is why I only got 5 randoms today ::'

While like last year I would chop on the same Maple Tree and would get tons of randoms

Randoms occur more on different skills :|

When I was fishing non-stop (About a day), my private chat was on off and I didn't talk in public chat, the randoms I got were the that mysterious box whereas I was doing a non-macro activity like cooking, I got 3 pinball events in 10 minutes whilst talking to someone who was there with me. So many Molly's too ..

Yeah mate, you're absolutely correct about the insane amount of randoms now infesting the game.

I mean, Jagex introduced randoms as a means of beating Autoers... right?

Soooooo, if a random every 15-20mins doesn't stop an autoer.... what in their tiny little brains thinks that having a random every 5-10 mins will stop them instead?

The volume of randoms in the game is now ridiculous (as I was reading this thread, I got a random for clicking on my bloody bank!). It's now reached a stage where the majority of rule abiding players are suffering, just so Jagex can slightly inconvenience the minority of autoers.... this has to stop.

Randoms are random, only in the sense that you cannot force them to occur. Different randoms can be triggered depending on what you are doing (e.g., you'll never get a rock golem while fishing).

Independent of all that, and going back to what I think the original post was about, the rate of randoms has increased. I have an ingame friend who has been 'box bombed', so I had to take all his gems off his hands.

I also got my first Drill Seargent last week, along with half a dozen different randoms while getting 2 crafting levels. Previously I had gotten none.

HOWEVER - you cannot really compare randoms randominity while doing something different, because location is a big factor in determining if a random might occur, along with what you are actually doing (or not doing). My theory is that if you are seeking randoms, go to a popular bot-spot and do repetitive things there and you are more likely to get some randoms.

WARNING: Prone to ramble ... but you probably already know that!

Well, I see that randoms are infesting the game lately, more than before it seems. Just to follow up, I was online for 5 minutes over the weekend, just to show my brother the game I play online. What happened??? Wham, hit by another Seargant Damian. Finished with him, and logged out.

I have to agree with what Harrington said. They never bothered me before, but now, it's just getting out of hand. When will Jagex learn, that randoms can be beat by bots. And if not, whoopie says the person running the bots, I'll just create 5 more bots to replace the 1 that I lost.

Lol, these "Randoms aren't random"-topics should be locked, cause RANDOMS ARE RANDOM

Lol.. #-o

Lol how wrong can you be??

Randoms are not random! - the only random thing that currently exists and which people could get is the "spin" of an electron.. and maybe the corresponding "error" in electronic signals..

But I really doubt jagex is using that to get a random... no they're using a recursive function to generate the randoms instead - which makes it look like "random" things.

on another note, even randoms can be "counted" and you can draw conclusions about it.. Everybody who has at least a small knowlenge of maths and physics knows the thing about gaussian and binomal distributions.. And you should know that every random has an average, standarddeviation etc..

Well I think the average depends on the thing (and how long) you've been doing that.. Also if you log in everytime at the same time it seems to give you randoms!

First they came to fishing

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't fishing

Then they came to the yews

and I didn't speak out because I didn't cut yews

Then they came for the ores

and I didn't speak out because I didn't collect ores

Then they came for me

and there was no one left to speak out for me.

I find it odd that I tend to get more randoms a few seconds after I log in. In the past few days, the old man has appeared or I have been whisked away to play 'Odd One Out' more times than I would like. Random or not, it is very irritating to log in and get caught up in a random event.

SHHH, I am concentrating.....oh look, a paperclip!

Where was I again?
