...and Warren Buffet looses his 2nd richest status:

MEXICO CITY, July 4 A Mexican telecommunications tycoon has surpassed Bill Gates as the world's richest man by $11 billion, a Mexican financial Web site claims.

The Sentido Comun site said the wealth of Carlos Slim, 67, has shot past the founder of Microsoft's most recent report of $56 million to at least $67.8 billion.

In its Who's Who list published Tuesday, the respected site said Slim's wealth surged based on his 33 percent holding in mobile phone group America Movil, which alone is worth $36.2 billion.

While Slim was ranked third richest man just a month ago by the Forbes Billionaires List after Gates and Warren Buffett at $52 billion, the latest news ranks Slim first, Gates second and Buffett third, a correspondent for The Telegraph reported.

Slim's other ventures include banking, construction, energy and tobacco, the report said.

I did not see this coming :-k

Although I cant say I trust Mexican newspapers...

uh in case you don't know, he has donated over a billion to charities worldwide, and generally revolutionized the computers most people are using today. What have you done that makes you better than him?

I think it's horrible that one person should have so much money, when so many others can't even afford food, housing or medical care.

Pretty awful world we live in really.

Yeah, it makes me feel sick.

I also agree, but ive heard Bill Gates has ALOT of charities going on, he actually gives away millions. (From what Ive heard)

+1 Although Id Like to Critisize that a bit

First of all Bill gates apparently stole the windows idea of a friend he was working with..and you know..its not just him who makes up microsoft ideas lol

He may have donated 1 billion pounds to charity but since he has so much money it does not affect him

If I had that much I would too....Real people who care actually travel out there and help them...I think Bill Gates gives most of his money to Malaria Charities , Correct me if im wrong, this is from the top of my head

To carry on with that point it dosent matter how much you give really ...its the intention in which you give it

Still Bill Gates in a very generous man

Its kinda weird to think that Bill Gates and the guy that overtook him could give every single person in world more than ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã10 each

I've read somewhere that Bill Gates has donated, in total, somewhere between 20 and 30 billion dollars to charity over the years. Dunno' if that's accurate or not, though.

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.

Yeah, I think I read somewhere that he and his wife have willed their fortune to be divided up amoungst all registered American charities after they're both dead (as opposed to being divided up amoungst his family).

I respect Bill Gates as he truly has acheived a lot (despite major opposition from Congress and other businesses), and I believe he's genuinely done a lot for the world.

There's a lot of other mega rich folk who could learn a lot from him. I'd like to think his fellow billionaires aspire to him, but I think that's very unlikely and that most donations are simply PR stunts.

Im nothing going to go there

hes not a friggin trillionaire, considering he has 50 billion, that means he has given away 2% of what he has, count how many people in the world have given away 2% of their money, you won't get a very big number if you even get one.

If I had that much I would too....Real people who care actually travel out there and help them...I think Bill Gates gives most of his money to Malaria Charities , Correct me if im wrong, this is from the top of my head
ok to actually go to the place and help someone in my opinion is way too much to ask for, most of us have our own lives. Especially Bill Gates who has a huge business to run and over 9 fronts of competition. His help would be far more effective if he just made a lot of money and donated big numbers.

To carry on with that point it dosent matter how much you give really ...its the intention in which you give it

I suppose thats an opinion, but I wouldn't consider myself generous just for dropping 50 cents in for ronald macdonald house of charities the next time I go to macdonalds. What really is thoughtful in my opinion is if you actually take your time to donate millions to many charities, and make charities of your own to take the money to those who need it.

yeah, one of them should consider that :uhh: better yet, if they divided the money strictly between 3rd world countries, then each person who actually needs money would get around $15 instead \'

I really think they should bring in the 10% of your earnings goes to charity thing. So many rich people, so many suffering...so much that could be done but isn't ;/

For you people that say Bill Gates has "only" given away a few billion and it's nothing to him are wrong.

In a few years when he retires he is going to be focusing on donating most of his money (over 40billion) to his charity, The Gates Foundation which will help many people in Africa. If people say thats not charitable, then nothing is.

Waren Buffet is also doing the same and giving most of his money to the Gates Foundation. No idea when but it was in the news a little while ago.

$15 is less than ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã10 more like ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã20 per third world citizen.

To the guy who said you'd have very few, if any, people who have given away 10% of their money...

I believe followers of Islam are obligated through their religion to give 10% of all their earnings to charity.

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.

Bill Gates has given so far about $6.7 billion dollars, and publicly stated that he will give away the vast majority of his wealth before he dies. He stated he wanted his family to be "well off, but not having to deal with the burden of tremendous wealth"

How can anyone hate Gates? There are hundreds of billionaires in the world, and only a handful donate in the hundreds of millions. Only two individuals in the history of the world have donated over a billion dollars: Gates and Buffet.

You call him greedy, but I am willing to bet that almost everyone on this forum, if we had Gate's wealth, would be more like the other 99% of the extreme upper class: donate a million or two, and then spend billions on luxury instead.

Gates provides more than half of the world's Malaria funding. He has saved millions of lives. Graphs from the CDC and the World Health Organization show a measurable drop in world malaria deaths since the Gates Foundation began.

This man has saved more lives than Mother Teresa and Ghandi combined.
