Jagex have messed up...

Featured Replies

Don't be fooled by Jagex's disclaimers, which are there because of their lawyers. This game is targeted squarely at pre-teens.

Most of the time the censor blocks out words that aren't offensive. Unfortunately, Jagex is trying to make a 'safe' enviroment for the kids who shouldn't be playing to begin with. Words like damn and [bleep] aren't bad unless you abuse the use of it. If you use [bleep] and damn every other sentence, it has no meaning. They should only be used in situations where it will have an effect on the meaning instead of showing how immature you are. Not, oh [bleep] you, you took those bones on the ground I was going to get

If you are under the age of 13, you must not create an account. We don't knowingly permit anyone under 13 to use any of our websites. Nor do we knowingly collect any personally identifiable information from preteens. Internet safety experts have advised that preteens do not fully appreciate the risk of providing too much personal information online or communicating with strangers they encounter online. And the game difficulty level is for teenagers and older. While we appreciate that many preteens would want to use our websites, we urge parents to instruct their children not to lie about their age so as to be able to use our websites before they are old enough. Instead, we recommend that parents set up an account and play together with their preteens who are otherwise too young to play the Game or our other games. Many parents have reported that playing our games as a family is fun and rewarding. Then when your children are 13 they will be ready for their own account.

That is just a facade...

im so on the phone thingy bandwagon. i hate having to send 2-3 pm's explaining to my rs friends that i had a real life phone call.

btw. fone is not censored, nor is cell.

The words you quoted shouldnt be used anyway. They are all used as derogitory terms and make people feel bad and lower their self esteem.

There is NO way to justify the use of those terms. Im not saying the censor is not touchy, just that the examples you have provided dont justify your cause.

Now if you would add some like "poof", various phrases with "gf", and many others then you would at least have my support =\

You can see The Libertine at 13 years old.

Haha.

Runescape is soo shielded. Jagex hell knows their game is made of a ton of people younger than 13 that's why they do this. They should do something to make the people under 13 get out and leave us all alone.

We curse and cuse to let anger out and we should be able to say minor curse words.

So you call this maturity then? That's the impression I'm getting here

And to the above post:

So you want to push the kids out so you can get some crude expressions out? I see no justification in that, really.

I think jagex figures that half the people that sign up to play runescape are lying and are under 13. And what can jagex do to stop them? They have no idea if they're lying or not. Because of this there are a large number of players below, and even well below the age of 12. So jagex makes their censors like their hosting a bunch of six year olds- which is a smart idea because they will also get the thumbs-up with parents for censoring so many words that six-year olds should know yet ;) .

Try typing phone or telephone or cellphone in see what happens...

i definatly knew what "phone" ment when i was 6 :wall: :wall: :wall:

come on man !!!!!!!! try to think !!!!!!!!

Would you like your kid to give away your/their phone number, email adress, HOME adress, or maybe where he goes to school to some 50 year old freak waiting to get into some more direct contact with him?

We're talking about kids who cannot fully reason about the dangers yet, and as long as those kids get their parents to pay 5$ a month, jagex will want them in their game ;)

Not that hard to understand :S

Good thinking, I must say. If we could pull together a list of censored words and try to contemplate why jagex would censor particular words, perhaps we could please those in the community that disprove of jagex's "overcensoring."

the kids shouldn't being playing in the first place...and crude expretions are made to show people how you feel.

^

And if people use CRUDE expressions to express themselves, it kind of says something about them, right?

So who's correct here?

ive always hated the RS filter, and for the longest time my name (joshthegod) was censored! i messaged them so many times to get that fixed (alot of times getting no or auto replys about random stuff)...

and ya the censor is too much, censoring websites? hell, i cant even say myspace in RS, jebus... -_- but ya took them what, 5 years to uncensor my name? longer? wow....

Controversy and Chaos!!!

On the confirmation of signing up page, it states that the game is targeted at and intended for persons of the age 13 years and older. To create a legal account if you are younger than 12 you must send in a form with express parental consent. Therefore, lawsuits for harmful content to people who are 12 and under are void because there are only two possible scenarios, and in both Jagex has made it so that they cannot be held responsible for harmful content. One, if the account creator who is of 12 years or less creates the account without express parental consent, Jagex could claim, rightfully so, that the account was void and not even supposed to be playing the game. In scenario two, if the creator was under 13 but a parental consent form HAD been sent in, Jagex could argue that the parents-the plaintiffs, knew of the risks upon creation of the account. That leads us to one conclusion: That Jagex is more concerned with revenue than with player's age.

EDIT: Also, the people who swear the most are actually the people under 13, because most people 13 and older can think of better words to use than curse words.

its not like 7 yr olds havnt even heard all the swear words already. Nowadays 7 yr olds r acting gangster and "cool"

Everyone has heard all the swear words and if not, they will soon enough...

Its their game, if they want to keep it clean it is up to the. Personally I see no need to use any type of word not available to all ages in the real world.

that makes no sense mate...

I suspect that there is a quite a large difference between those words used in context in films, and those words used directed towards you in the in-game chat.

Though one word I want unblocked is 'homo-'. The chat blocks it, even when part of a word. It means 'the same', for flips sake, whats wrong with that? For that matter whats wrong with homosexuality that even an inadvertant mention must be censored?

Censoring that just bugs me because there are so many legitimate words that contain it.

Well theres the responsible people like us, and then theres the 5 million morons that call everyone gay because thats the only somewhat insulting word they know... <.<

O god that sucks, i don't want to have to so, oh that stinks or something. It sounds really really stupid IMO

Hegemony-Spain

There's been a few statements made that I seriously doubt:

1- That parents would cut off access to runescape, due to their 13+ year-old seeing or using such words as hell, crap, and damn.

2- That the aforementioned words can only be used for the purpose of insulting people, and no other.

3- That if you use these words it makes you a crude person.

Rubbish. Complete and utter rubbish.

As the censor is there to block offensive words or those that could be used for criminal purposes, why is homosexual blocked? I mean, we have the ignore button, so even if someone could be bothered to type homosexual in an insulting way, the only real way would be to follow someone around either repeatedly saying it or calling you it, leaving them looking like a prat in public, reported for harrassment and you blissfully unaware of what they're spouting, or laughing at the absurdity of someone shouting "homosexual" and believing it to be insulting. Is there anyone here who finds, on its own, the word "homosexual" offensive?

And what's wrong or offensive about "bra"?

Finally, can someone explain why random letters in words, such as "m" in some words, are blocked?

Wootcannon

^

Well, they're not called crude words for nothing. If you're not a crude person, I do not see any reason for you to use profanity. However, I agree that terms themselves, such as homosexual, can be used without harm.

The problem that I have with this whole thing is this:

There are no really good reasons to fill the game with cussing and doing so will detract from the already declining environment.

Seriously, there are complaints about people being noob, scammers, autoers, etc. with all the scum, so what will happen when the filter is removed? Cussing will be abundant and so whatever quality and innocence people percieve in the community will be really diminished.

And about the "kids will hear it later anyways":

So what? Does that mean that it's ok for them to hear it EARLIER? Newer generations are constantly observed as getting worse, and I don't think letting kids hear cussing will help. They should be kept innocent.

You are forgeting that if you are under 13, you can still play with parents supervision. Playing is not against the rules. However, words like poof should not be censored. ::'

Jagex are far too oppressive -.- .

But I 'spose I would choose to irritate the hell out of 90% of the players just so I could keep some parents to allow their brats to play and make me more money. :-w

avatar1rs8.jpg

Okay, they block the stupidest of words, they block some letters if they are on their own, but here are 2 words that are not filtered that, if going with the rest of the list, should've been on there: Blow, Hell. Now, I get to use those words. They filter those they will be recieving a rather long message/complaint ;)

All DFS threads turn into efficiency flame wars >.>

>thread is now a flame fest

Most 12 year olds are going to turn 13 soon, anyway. People are aging faster than ever before.
