Anyone quit smoking?

Bah, it's that time again, i'm quitting smoking, hopefully for good this time.

Anyone had any success with quitting before? The main reason is I recently got pneumonia, i'm basically over it now but there was every thought in my head that it could be something worse because it's lung pain when you cough, so as soon as I got it I just quit because I knew i'd be making it worse. A week and a bit on, I havn't touched a cig at all.

I'm having a bit of trouble though because my girlfriend smokes. We sit in the garden in the sun, or go out somewhere, she'll smoke, and i'll want some badly. Yesterday I nearly gave in, so I was wondering if anyone had any tips to combat this.

cheers!

Tried getting your girlfriend to quit with you? You could also give yourselves goals ie. If you go three months without smoking you can have a holiday.

try telling her that this is something that really means alot to you, and you want her to not smoke around you
While a good idea, I am more inclined to go with Ragen's suggestion of both quitting at the same time, rather than just asking her not to smoke around him.

Just don't smoke anymore. It's what I've done after 8 years of smoking. I really didn't have trouble at all. Or atleast, yet, I've stopped smoking 23 december last year. Maybe the first seven months are the easy part? I don't know. Have some discipline and you'll be alright. If you're asking yourself why you're quiting, ask your girlfriend for a puff after two months of no smoking, and you'll taste/feel why you quit.

Try a more attainable addiction, like alchoholism or child porn? 8-)

Kidding, err. I wouldn't know what to tell you. I've been smoke free 14 years. \'

I quit just over a year ago after 15+ yrs. Honestly, it comes down to really wanting to quit...I mean REALLY wanting to. You can't have the attitude that "I'm going to try to quit" (as Joda says, "there is no try")...you have to have the attitude that "I have quit and will never smoke again". People talk about secrets to quitting...I have one: DONT SMOKE...that's the easiest way to quit. It kinda bothers me that the Stop-smoking aids (nic gum, patch, etc.) seem to have a lot of people convinced that you can't quit without help...that's bull. Anyone can quit on their own...just don't smoke.

Definately. The more it becomes a competition, the more inclined you'll be to win - not only to rub it in your partner's face by comprehensively beating the crap out of her (metaphorically of course!), but to also avoid the smugness she'll have and the humiliation you'll have from losing. Success is your only smegging option, failure's not!

Cold turkey. I quit smoking and never touched another since. The average time a person has finally quit after using patches etc is 7. This means 7 attempts at using the patches to quit, not 7 patches. I think it's a mind thing more than anything... If you're on patches somewhere back there you're thinking I need help to do this or I'm not really sure if I can do this, or maybe this is the easier option, I'm not sure if I actually want to do this.

I think you really need something there for you to go okay, enough I don't want to anymore, not now, not ever again. My mum nearly died from smoking, which was enough for me to throw the pack in the bin and quit entirely. My dad also quit after 20 years of smoking the heaviest pack twice a day by using tic tacs?? He now has a new addiction... He carries a packet of tic tacs around with him everywhere he goes. Cheaper than smokes I guess.

I don't know if that's just his determination though... I mean the guy gave up alcohol as well, he used to have at least 3 or 4 light beers a day and one day decided it was enough and hasn't had a drop of alcohol in nearly a year.

Put your normal cigarette money in to a savings account and save it for a year. Every time you think of a cigarette, check your savings account and see what it's up to for your brand new car at the end of the year or holiday overseas. THAT is how much money you spend a year on cigarettes.

I'd also have to recommend the above, quit with her or tell her not to smoke around you. Or remove yourself; you don't need to be outside while she's having a cigarette either.

When I wanted to lose weight my partner helped me. Every time I wanted to slack off and get take out for dinner or not have my run, he's be on my arse like a fat kid on a cupcake.

It's amazing the things you can do when you have another person working with you as a team.

The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.

I applaud you if you can fight an addiction because I hear it can be very hard, I am only 14 so I don't really know about addiction but my grandmother use to smoke like 8packs a day in 1960s until she found out it was bad and she went completely cold turkey through prayer to St. Anthony, its amazing how much hope prayer can give you.

And listen to the smart lady above my post, she has good advice.

Well, im not even 14 s i dont smoke nor do i want to, but i just learned this weekend my great uncle smoked for a long time like 2-3 packs a day and he quit cold turkey in the 80s, before most of the assist stuff im guessing. He just put a pack in his desk drawer (at the bank he worked at) and he just didnt do it again. he was tempted and he said he sometimes would put an unlit cigarette in his mouth and twirl it around, but never smoked again. Every time I quit is just due to boredom. What I do is either play the lottery with the money or give it to charities. I don't think I want to fully quit yet, but if you've got somewhere else the money should go, it seems to help.

my dad quit smoking before i was born because he realized the smoke would cause problems to my breathing. my mom never smoked at all. He stopped smoking because he was going to have a son.

so to get some motivation, go impregnate your girlfriend 8-)

but seriously, what you need is a good motivation. if only your girlfriend didn't smoke, then you could use her breathing health as motivation for you to quit. but since she smokes... try that quit together thing as someone said. use the motivation that your girlfriend is going through the same thing.

tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :(
But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.
