August 18, 200718 yr wow that thing about arriving before you arrive is really bizarre... so if you wanted to travel to somewhere say right next to you that you could see, would you see yourself appear before you decide to leave? But then if that happened couldn't you choose not to go, but then you'd never have left in the first place and then wouldn't have seen yourself and then...arrrgh :wall: I guess its not really time travel, its just kinda something. Its like your going so fast you go backwards or something... Well you could only see the light comming from you, due to the fact that everything has light rays comming from it or shining off it. And if it something next to you, that would be fractions apon fractions of a second of time allowed to see yourself. You would have to travel one light year (5,878,625,373,184 miles) faster then the speed of light and look back at earth with a telescope just to see one year back in the past. When you look at a star in the sky the light it produces takes time to get to you, the speed of light. So when you see the star you are really seeing it's rays comming at you and by the time they reach earth they are years old. So you are seeing it years in the past. August 18, 200718 yr Ah a good science topic I am interested in 8-) Trust me guys. Buy the book- it's very enlightening. You must tell me the book  the elegant universe by Brian Greene. Mentioned it in one of my previous posts (if not the post you quoted), it's about 400 pages long, and explains things very well for those who aren't exactly experts at mathematics or physics. Heck, I barely understood general relativity before I read the book, but now I've got all the basics of general relativity and quantum mechanics down (thanks to great usages of metaphors and analogies), and I understand a great deal more about the universe, especially if Superstring theory turns out to be completely proven correct some day. wow that thing about arriving before you arrive is really bizarre... so if you wanted to travel to somewhere say right next to you that you could see, would you see yourself appear before you decide to leave? Its like your going so fast you go backwards or something... No. Guys, this isn't time travel. It's just experiencing time at different rates. August 18, 200718 yr Oh, I get it now. He wouldn't actually be going back in time, but it would appear like it. Yeah. I was talking about the speed of light from the sun to Earth is 8 seconds or minute (I believe it's minutes), and if the sun were to some how be sucked into a black hole, moved, exploded, etc, we wouldn't know about it for 8 minutes due to the speed of light. Sorry but I don't think thats right. Think about it.. if the sun were to blow up... you really think that we would wait 8 min for us to feel the impact? I think we would feel the impact as soon as it were to happen. we would all die in mili seconds and wouldn't even know. But that is just my theory (now no one become rich of my brain noob lol) Also about the break light speed I think is impossible and even it were possible it would be useless... why? Because you are going faster then light so technically everything would be dark, pitch black, If you were to turn on a flash light instead of going forward it would go backwards. you would get to places so fast but you wouldn't be able to see anything. Unless you went like 1,000 miles below light speed I think its not very smart :P Barrow Items: 45 (3 Guthan Spears)(12/25/06)(1/1/07)(04/07/07)Proud Owner Of Quest Cape SINCE the day it came outGot Visage July 31, 2007Visage #2 August 4th, 2008AFTER ONE HOUR of googeling i'v came to the conclusion that there is no game called real life

It wouldn't be dark, other light rays from different objects would be hitting you no? But are you talking about the light on the craft you could travel in or something? I am a bit confused :-s Tbfgraphx14Happy to find I'm not the only one who eats glass.

Newton's was an instantaneous vision, as you discribe, and Einstien's was (and is; still in use today as I understand) General Relativity, which put the action of gravity at the speed of light, so we would not get flung out into a wild trajectory until 8 minutes after the explosion of the sun. Einstien's idea of gravity conforms best with our obsevations, as I understand, so you may be wrong. Not only would all the nasty gamma rays and such, which travel at the speed of light, reach us 8 minutes after the event, the gravitational consequences would to. Feel free to correct, anyone.

It's also really hard to believe that an electron takes an infinite number of paths before arriving at it's destination, or that it's actually possible for us to walk straight through a brick wall. Physics is just weird that way. You can't always rely on what you see in your everyday life to tell you all the answers :P . August 18, 200718 yr We can walk through walls, Reb? Call me gullible but by the post it doesn't sound like you're being sarcastic. :uhh: Well, to be perfectly clear the odds of an object of our mass passing through through something like a brick wall ever having happened any time at any place in the entire history of our universe are pathetically slim, but if every single atom in your body were to properlly tunnel through the molecules of the wall in the correct path, it is possible. So, yes, we "can", but trust me, it's never going to happen to you in your lifetime, nor in the history of the human race for that matter. August 18, 200718 yr If you can travel faster than the speed of light, it would be a matter of replacing that variable with your speed, if that's relevant to what you want to know. Otherwise all standard formulas still hold.I don't get it. If you use Newtonian calculations you'll be way off by the time you reach anywhere near the speed of light. You use non-Newtonian calculations, they all involve the speed of light as a constant and while it's been a while since I juggled those formula's, I'm fairly sure they break down and start returning values like "infinity" once you get close enough to 'c'. -This message was deviously brought to you by:

August 18, 200718 yr Time travel is absolutely, undeniably impossible. Period. Einstein himself states that it IS possible, and will come in due time. Geniouses have been wrong (several times) before. Anyways, I just don't think it will ever happen :-X . YOU! ATTEND TET EVENTS! CLICK HERE!
August 18, 200718 yr What would happen if you travelled one light year away from earth, and then you looked back and phoned someone on Earth (ok you'll have to do a bit of imagining here).
August 18, 200718 yr What would happen if you travelled one light year away from earth, and then you looked back and phoned someone on Earth (ok you'll have to do a bit of imagining here). You better hope your phone signal goes as fast as light or your going to be waiting a very long time. With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

You better hope your phone signal goes as fast as light or your going to be waiting a very long time. Say like if the phone signal IS as fast as light (I know, but I said you'll have to do a bit of imagining), would we be looking into the past, while talking into the future of what we are seeing? :-k
August 18, 200718 yr Your friend would pick up the phone a year later... Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:
August 18, 200718 yr Sorry but I don't think thats right. Think about it.. if the sun were to blow up... you really think that we would wait 8 min for us to feel the impact? I think we would feel the impact as soon as it were to happen. we would all die in mili seconds and wouldn't even know. But that is just my theory (now no one become rich of my brain noob lol) Sorry, but it is right. Here's a couple of scenarios for you: 1. The Sun somehow goes supernova right this instant. That would roughly equate to a massive explosion, and explosions carry a number of different things. The first is the light from the fire or whatever, since nothing can travel faster than light, it actually would take 8 minutes to reach us. Repeat, we would not feel the effects instantly. When you look up into the sky at night you are looking into the past, you are looking at the light from stars which left thousands, maybe millions of years ago. Those stars could have long gone supernova but we won't see that until the light from the supernova reaches us. 2. The Sun somehow vanishes, completely disappears. Now, since the Sun's gravity is the only thing keeping us in orbit we'd stray off our orbit straight away right? Wrong, gravity cannot propogate faster than light. The loss of the Sun's gravity would not be felt until the light (or absence of) reaches us. "Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"
