His first phase of this was the destruction of the Taliban, who mostly resided in Afghanistan. Hence the invasion.

The charismatic leader of Al-Queda, no less, who seems to outwit the Americans consistantly despite the lack of any equipment (apart from a amcorder). An Islamic fundamentalist who preaches Jihad against the Western World, a call which is actually rejected by most Muslims on the grounds that his reasoning isn't a just reason for the declaration of Jihad as according the Qu'ran. The Taliban was a group of wealthy men who funded the Mujhadeen rebellion in the 80's, and once the nation was theirs, they ousted numerous Mujhadeen chieftans in order to give power domination to themselves.

 

 

 

The majority of the former Mujhadeen is now known as the Northern Alliance and supports Coalition forces in Afghanistan. Many of them have worked with Americans during the rebellion.

Barihawk: I should have made the distinction between Arab and native mujahadeen. Al Qaeda evolved from Maktab al-Khadamat, the organisation that was behind the funding and recruitment for the Arab mujahadeen. There's some dispute as to whether CIA has supported both these groups, but I believe that they have supported both. They followed the "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" doctrine to the letter.
