Is there something wrong with me?

Featured Replies

At about 9:00 this morning I get a text. "Brittany's mom passed away this morning in a car accident." Now, I'm not the best of friends with her, but we're friendly towards each other, and we're in a couple of the same classes, so I should be kind of upset about this, right? But I'm not; I don't cry, my heart doesn't drop to the floor, and I'm not walking around in a daze all day. I feel nothing. And what really scares the hell outta me is that I'm not upset that I'm not upset about this. (if that makes sense) I'm not emotionally dead, either. A couple months ago a girl who I have really the same relationship with nearly died in a car accident and I was completely devastated. So... is there something wrong with me?

You said it yourself; you didn't know the mother, you're the daughter's acquaintance. Plus it's hard to take it emotional when you hear it 3rd hand through a text message...

Dumb thread. Just gunna put that out there.

There is nothing wrong with you at all. There is no right or wrong way to deal with grievances (although laughing about it may be a little wrong). Everyone deals with them in there own way. Also the fact you are not extremely close friends with this girl would explain why you feel unaffected. Basically don't fret about it, everyone deals with this sort of thing in their own way, you aren't expected to break down every time :)

I'm incredibly insensitive and no, there's nothing wrong with you :P You didn't know her mum so there is no reason that you have any feeling with her passing away.

Well you're fat and ugly for a start. Oh wait you mean something else.

Well its hard to feel upset over someone dieing when you didn't know them. I mean if you did that then you'd be crying all the time.

As said 6 times so far, nothing wrong with you.

You didn't know the mom....so you shouldn't be freaking out or anything.

My great aunt died in the last 2 months....and I didn't feel sad at all, because I'd met her all of two times.

Nothing wrong with you, I don't know why you would think you would start break down crying because some girls mom who you didn't even know died :-s .

My friend's dad who've I've known since I was born died 3 days before my friends Bar Mitzvah, and that was absolutely terrible, and it wasn't expected at all since he was perfectly healthy and fell victim to a heart attack, but I didn't break down crying, or walk around in a daze that day, even though they were like family to me. There's nothing wrong with you at all.

Actually, I would be concerned if you broke out in tears from hearing about someone dieing that you didn't even know...

PLEASE don't flame me for that ^^ lol

I'm like that too, I never really care for emotion. I could watch a dog get shot and not really care. I'm not saying that I am a bad person although.

as bball stated too, don't flame me

There's nothing wrong with you. You didn't know the person so naturally you wouldn't get emotionally affected by it.

You probably didn't know the mother as well as you knew the girl, so I would be surprised if you felt any emotion at all.

I lost my first best friend to a car accident and I was in denial until I saw that it was very real, placing roses on top of his casket before I cried.

And when I found out my other best friend committed suicide, I was fine for about 2 weeks until it hit me and I had a break down.

A regular customer of mine from an old job died the other month and I felt nothing.

Much the same as in your situation, I guess I didn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t know her well enough to have any real emotional attachment.

Yeah. A good friend of mine killed himself in March this year. I never cried about it. I felt more sadness that he ended his own life when he did (he was very into drugs and had been going downhill for awhile), but not a particular sadness over his death. Then again, I may still be in denial, the funeral was private and I don't know where he's buried so I maybe it just still isn't real for me. Now that I think about it, I've haven't cried over a death since my pet hamster quite a few years back. :P Death is a natural part of life and it happens all the time, so don't feel bad just because you don't cry over someone.

The only reason I cry over a death is if it is someone close to me that I've known for a long time, and I think about all the good times that we had, and the fact that I'll never see them again... But I think its the thought of that combined with the sadness of the fact that they wont be able to experience life again.

The other reason would be if their death will make somebody else suffer, and be sad, especially if the person who died meant the world to them, and they'll be miserable now.

Haha, not quite, otherwise you wouldn't be scared. So, this would make you upset (scared) that you're not upset that you're not upset about the incident?

Anyway I don't think there's anything wrong with you. I'm a very unexcitable person. When most people win something they get excited about it. Even though I've never won the lottery and thus couldn't reliably tell what my reaction would be, I hardly see myself jumping for joy or making any enthused yelps whatsoever. Does this mean there's something wrong with me? Nope. Not everyone is emotionally wired the same way. And as others have said, you didn't even know this person.

There's nothing wrong with you exactly. You didn't know her, it didn't affect you. Hundreds of people die everyday, yet you don't cry everyday, do you? However she has been friendly toward you, so if you ever wanted to step up your relationship a notch (romantically or otherwise) here's your chance
