Zombies. A reality?

So, I am a zombie fanatic and I recently watched Dead of the Dead (Old and new), 28 days/weeks later, Terror Planet, and Resident Evil 2, which got me thinking. Zombies. A possibility?

when I got thinking on that subject, it got more to the point of scientific status and where we are today. Of course I don't think there is going to be a zombie outbreak soon or never, for that matter, but could it be possible.

With todays technology, we could create really any life-threatening disease we want to. Could it be possible that we could 'create' a disease, now or later, to give people zombie like symptoms?

Basically, the requirements of the disease:

1. Cause rage/aggressive actions

2. Eat/bite people (Basically, enough brain damage to do it)

3. Decompose the flesh of the victim

4. Cause 'dead' nerves throughout most the body or cause a constant adrenaline rush, so that the victim won't feel pain.

5. Make the disease spread physically (i.e Sex, blood, saliva, etc.)

I think we could make something like it. Most people don't, but I look at what kind of diseases/mental issues some patients have and they meet some of these requirements like rage/aggressiveness, they bite people, and sometimes have full on adrenaline rushes.

A possibility? I don't know about the reanimating thing, but it seems kind of likely. Your thoughts?

the undead type(dawn, day, night of, ect) most certainly wouldnt happen. but the 28 days/weeks later scenario, if you think about it is only a virus. the 'infected' people arnt dead.

Well, that's where I am sort of going towards. A virus that can do that of 28 days/weeks later. It would be strange to see the "Reanimate" one, but I was leaning towards the virus one being more of reality.

Some of these qualities would probably make you die (unless you're taking that as a given for the outcome of this 'zombification'). Partailly decomposed flesh would severely compromise your immune system and bacteria would likely fester and kill you pretty easily. Overload of adrenaline gives you a 'fight or flight' response and supresses digestion; you'd literally run out of puff and just break down into a heap. Dead nerves could compromise motor skills or sensory input and just leave you in a heap anyway.

As for the others, dunno, I'm sure there are all kinds of wierd and wonderful pathogens which can change disposition and make you go into a rage etc.

I think we will create a disease like that sooner or later, we're that goddamned stupid. But, even if a disease isn't made, I'm sure someone will eventually make a drug that harmful sooner or later. :?

Well if take some disease like Rabies.

It is contagious with bodily fluids.

It causes delirium.

It affects the nervous system and the brain.

It can be carried by a vast number of mammalian species and can still infect humans.

It is usually 100% fatal if treatment is not applied as soon as possible

But thing is, rabies is much much more detrimental for the victims, since it causes SEVERE muscle spasms - so much so that victims often break their bones because their muscles are twitching soo much....

Everything you wanted to know about zombies:

I have a book about tons of questions that kids wanted to know and it had this story about a zombie clan in South America. They went into a zombie like state and reaked havoc in their town and in graveyards, and when they would ask the people why they did what they did, they couldnt even remember anything. If I find the book I will post the story.

I believe we could make such a virus/drug/chemical.

Though I don't believe our fragile physical body could handle the intensity of it, nor could our mental abilities process what exactly is happening, and be able to continue on with the actions being done.

The life span after being infected, wouldn't be longer then 10 minutes in my own estimation. ::'

I remember reading an article that a few scientists drained the blood from recently dead dogs and filled their veins with some sort of cold blood-like liquid instead and tried to revive them. Apparently they got up walking around in a kind of zombie state, just obvs without the flesh eating

How true that is, I dunno, but I remember reading about it.

As you seem to admit, you've been watching too many movies ;).

I bet it will be possible in several years but I do hope no one tries to make some kind of virus like the one you described.

Points 1 & 5 already exist and occur commonly. Especially point 1, people are naturally agressive and it doesn't take much to encourage excessive violence.

Many diseases are contageous via saliva or through bites, such as rabbies.

I think that rabbies is maybe the original inspiration for zombies?

I think Resident Evil has the most realistic way of zombies happening, with a virus to try and ressurect dead people being developed but accidently being released and causing people to mutate and become aggressive or whatever. The most realistic thing would be a nuclear bomb's fallout causing people to mutate but I doubt they'd become aggressive.

Technically, it doesn't count (by your standards), but there's already zombies. Google up "bad lobotomy" or watch "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" through the end. That shows it quite well. Anyway, chances are if there's gonna be Horror-flic zombies in real life, it would need some really bad sh** to go down for it to happen. Something along the lines of nuke+viral agent factory=boom or something.

If it is possible then the zombies would either kill us all or enslave us. After all, there are more dead people than alive and if all of the dead suddenly came back to life, we're dead. And I mean the corpses that rotted away too, they'd be reconstructed to a primal level and we'd have to either flee from Earth or drop several nukes where the zombies are coming from, killing them and thousands of humans too.
