What ever happened to honest playing?

I had just finished up a load of lobbies when I noticed that someone was selling charcoal. I had seen the scam before, but never seen anyone really fall for it. She's advertising, "Selling charcoal!! only 200k because i'm quitting runescape!"

I keep an eye on the chat box from everyone talking and notice a guy (can't remember his name now to save my life.. or something wierd like that), going crazy at the girl for her to trade her that he'd like to buy her charcoal. I immediatly ran out to the 2 and started typing as fast as possible "Do not buy charcoal!" He asks me why and I informed him that she is trying to scam him because charcoal is a worthless item that you get on members for a certain quest (I remembered this from back when i used to be p2p). The girl who was trying to scam goes beserk on me with a barage of "Noob shut up!" and "Stfu f2per you aint even a member you noob mind your own business!"

Though her idiodic rants didnt effect me at all, I repeated to the poor lower leveler (who was around level 38) that it was a worthless item and he shouldn't buy it. I walked back into the bank. A minute or two later I hear the low leveler say, "Well I don't have 200k but I can offer you my trimmed skirt." I was amazed. So dumb-founded that I didn't even run out to try and stop him. The trade was complete. I even took a picture I was so amazed. As you can tell from the picture, the scammer appears to be a well respected p2per. She even said she had 98 woodcutting when she was calling me a noob, but I didn't bother to look. You can even see the poor low leveler standing right behind her SKIRTLESS because he just fell victim to a scam:

The point of this story and the topic in the Rant discussion = WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO HONEST PLAYING!! I started playing RuneScape years ago *points to siggy*. I remember when I first started playing the amount of people helping other people was overwhelming (at least what I experienced). People used to be so kind when you asked them questions and would show you how things worked if asked with respect. I'm not talking about everyone, but from what I can tell these days and what is a growing problem is Runescapes many arrogant, rude, "noob", immature, hateful players that take up the majority of us. Would it not be much more simple to just help people and get along rather than deliberatly ruinging another person's playing time (through scamming, hateful words, ect) to benefit yourself?

EDIT: Just had to get that off my chest. Normally I don't get as ticked off about stuff like this, especially if it has nothing to do with me. But I found it sickening and down right [developmentally delayed]ed and it pissed me off something fierce. You may agree with me or flame me for this topic. I won't care either way \' . chances are I wont even come back to view this topic :anxious: .

It'll get locked cause there's a 'no-naming players in a negative light' rule. Unless you block out the scammer's name.

I agree though. Too bad the low level didn't listen. I guess it's the only way for some people to learn.

There are a bit of rotten apples playing this game, as we all already know. Scamming, macroing, cheating and other offensive activities appeal to them. They'd rather the get rich quick schemes than the slowly, but surely, money earners.

I still don't get why people would buy things like that. Not only are the items usually a bit expensive for them, but Charcoal? What are you going to do with Charcoal. Even if you don't know what it is, you'll probably think its a black rock from the trade screen. Oh well.

There is still honest gameplay (go to places like Barrows, Fishing Guild, Aradouge, Brimhaven Dungeon, etc). The problem is, many of the high levels can't bear hanging out at idiot-populated places, so they will hang out somewhere where they can be safe from noob barrages. I noticed that not many people are too annoying everytime I speak in public (people asking about my crown, begging, etc). Perhaps some of the annoying players got bored with not getting what they want, who knows. The point is, if you search carefully, you might find some honest gameplay with other people.

Did you report the scammer? if no..lol.

Its not a scam...

He didn't say himself ANYTHING about the charcoal except his asking price.

It isn't scam? How so? She claimed it was rare and worth 200k. When the guy asked what it did she said, "It shows that you're rich". That's a flat out lie the she herself knew was a lie. In my opinion, a scam.

* I did report her by the way everyone  .

** If the topic gets locked then that's fine. I didn't know there was a "no name" type of rule and I'm a bit lazy at the moment to resave, block out the name, reload, and edit the topic.

unfortunatly some players dont realise the damage they do. they think its another game were poeple will move on, but the difference is we earned our items (i hope) and they scam it/steal it. and to clarafy anyone saying it isnt a scam, it clearly is as jagex marked certian items like charcoal which only use is in quests etc for such prices is not price manipulation, its scamming.

now i totally agree with you Zibl, the economy has grown greedy in my eyes and people are wanting more money then ever in any ways possible just for over-priced rares, 3rd age equipment, god dungeon equipment, new dragon armors etc. (the reason i state over priced rares is my red phat was stolen from my account in '02 and cant make any money to re-pay for one) but unless someone invents the "stab-a-player-in-the-face-through-the-computer-screen" system theres nothing we can realy do except report and hope jagex hears our plea. but dont worry there is still some nice honest players out there like myself and many more TIF'ers....id hope..

off topic: Out of curiosity 123yourgone, your siggy says 99 ALL combat stats yet your only 121 combat. rather intriging... :-k

this always happens, it's called reminiscing.

I've been playing since late 2001 or early 2002 (having trouble finding proof of exact date). but dang did we play the same rsc? the only reason it seemed like there were more honest players it was 87% people macroing,

There were just as many people scamming back then too (spinach rolls jump to mind).

and your sig says it all:

hacked 3 times in 5 years...

it wasnt hacked 3 times in last 6 months..

it's not a recent thing, the idiots have always been there and always will, but now RS has 5m+ players, it can be a little harder to find the honest ones that's all.

you have to think of RS like a city.. 5 years ago it was like er.. lets say penzance, small population, a certain % of idiots to decent people. but as it was a small town it was easy to spot the idiots.

Now RS is the size of London, same % of idiots, but no way you can know them all or keep track, a lot easier for them to do what they want to do because they can hide in the massive numbers..

the amount of decent or bad people hasnt changed.. RS was never some kind of babylon where people lived hand in hand. nothings changed but size.

Autoing on classic was very low in 2001 and 2002, the autoing wouldnt have even been at 10% of players in 2003 untill rs2 beta came out and jagex said you had to choose, and then every one started autoing.

And people were a lot nicer on classic, there was still jerks but you could always find them in wild and 3 hit them, unlike rs2 people can be a jerk with no consequences since you will probably never see them twice.
