Then ask to read it aloud to the class. Beat her at her own game. Thanks Venomai for this super sig and Kwimbob for the awesome avatar!
November 24, 200718 yr This makes me laugh actually. My History teacher is as right-wing as they come, and obviously teaching History, he has to tell us about things like Marxism and the Bolsheviks. He's decent enough to admit that some of the stuff Marx prophesises actually does come true, unlike other people I know who would tell us it's a whole load of [cabbage] and we shouldn't bother reading it. Teaching us both sides and allowing us to make our own judgement, even if he disagrees, is what makes teachers like him good. That's an education, not merely a learning. As others have pointed out, construct a counter-case, with points, evidence and an explantion, and then when she starts to preach, blast her with the counter. You surely cannot be punished for being involved in a debate she instigated in the first place. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |

November 25, 200718 yr That's actually against the law in my State. They'd have to wait after class to pull that kind of [cabbage]. I, honestly, wouldn't care. I'd rip up the pamphlets and throw it in the trash. I <3 Gears of War 2. Add me on Xbox Live and mention you are from Tif :D

November 25, 200718 yr She should stay un-biased on all subjects that are controversial. Thats why I hate when they view evolution as a fact when teaching. Evolution is only "controversial" due to the religious lobbyists opposing it. Scientifically the evolution of species (including the humans) is no less a "theory" than the gravity "theory". It exists whether you want to acknowledge it or not, and it occurs in all living organisms at the level of micro/macroevolution continuously. Just about every accredited scientist accepts it, just like chemistry, physics, biology... Why wouldn't it be taught as a 'fact' just because a few nutjobs would rather teach an old storybook as a real alternative (which it definitely is not, not to mention not all students are christian to begin with) Also, the american public is an exception within western, industrialized nations when it comes to viewing evolution as fact. Other nations who score the best results in education, literacy, science and mathematics accept it far more widely: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news ... 29204.html As you can see, only Turkey is less fond of accepting the facts than the USA.
November 25, 200718 yr On the topic of evolution, I don't really care much. I'm probably not going to survive long enough to see direct results of it, and if I feel the need of wanting to find out how the world was made, I'll just ask God directly when I go. All the riots and protests and general insanity over some bullsh** like that is 1) pointless, 2) destructive, and 3) distracting us from bigger issues, like finding Osama and figuring out a way to produce energy for when our worldwide addiction to oil is gonna bite us in the [donkey] (shortage, pollution, decreased space (more gunk filling up random spots), etc.). While it is evolution on a fundamental level, I believe bacteria/virus mutation is more of a Biology or Chemistry issue than a Darwin issue. Yes, we do have better things to worry about, but the irritating human nature of trying to find the "truth", even when it does not matter, apparantly matters to the point where people get fanatic over it. Does it matter if we evolved from monkeys or fish? no, but some think it does. Command the Murderous Chalices! The thing(s) are/were dead already, might as well put it to good use, right? Not necessarily, if you buy a fur coat somewhere down the line, yes, the animal was killed, now lets say we all decided not to buy those fur coats, would anyone have any reason to continue to kill the animals. That fact is that if we stopped buying fur coats the companies would stop making them and the foxes/wolves/cats/dogs would stop being killed to make those coats, its much more complex then "if its already dead I didn't kill it." November 27, 200718 yr She should stay un-biased on all subjects that are controversial. Thats why I hate when they view evolution as a fact when teaching. Oh my. #-o I guess teaching how the universe and the earth formed is a bias and shouldn't be taught either, right? Or perhaps anything that happened before 6,000 years ago -- obviously it goes against religion and is a bias as well. I wasn't thinking about bacteria and viruses when I made that statement. I just categorize the topic of "Did we evolve from monkeys?" under Random Trivia. All the riots and protests and general insanity over some [cabbage]** like that is 1) pointless, 2) destructive, and 3) distracting us from bigger issues, like finding Osama and figuring out a way to produce energy for when our worldwide addiction to oil is gonna bite us in the [donkey] (shortage, pollution, decreased space (more gunk filling up random spots), etc.). While it is evolution on a fundamental level, I believe bacteria/virus mutation is more of a Biology or Chemistry issue than a Darwin issue. You make it sound like the people in the military are the same people who are constantly studying evolution and other scientific studies. Finding out where we came from has pretty much been what man has tried doing for thousands of years. Why do you think religion is around? Because man, in general, wants to know how everything started -- its natural human curiosity. Not necessarily, if you buy a fur coat somewhere down the line, yes, the animal was killed, now lets say we all decided not to buy those fur coats, would anyone have any reason to continue to kill the animals. That fact is that if we stopped buying fur coats the companies would stop making them and the foxes/wolves/cats/dogs would stop being killed to make those coats, its much more complex then "if its already dead I didn't kill it." This is probably the best thing animal activists always say in defense of what they do. Now, lets assume that -- yes, no one buys fur coats or meat products anymore. What happens? A few things: First, overpopulation. Animals will easily start to over populate the world because they aren't being steadily killed off. Second, many, many people will be out of a job. Imagine -- anyone who works with meat and/or the fur trade for a living is now simply SOL because of this. Farmers (IMO) would make less money than they currently do because all they will have to rely on is their crops. Third, it's already been stated but you know all the stuff that is currently causing global warming? Well, now imagine this process going a lot faster with all of the extra methane being produced from animals. What would start as an eco-friendly idea will soon turn against the environment for us. Good job. Of course this is all on that big, and I mean big, assumption that you could get everyone (or a majority) of people in the world to stop eating meat or using animal products. It's impossible to do so and, as you can see above, a waste of time.

November 27, 200718 yr They can teach as long as the acknowledge it as a theory and that there are others, because there is still a large majority of people who hold to the creation belief and religious debate is never a good thing. Nope, it's not a majority. Only about 30% of americans disagree with the evolution theory, which leaves 70% believing in it (and as you can see by that chart, the US is an extreme exception within western nations when it comes to accepting it). I don't see how you can mix theology and science when it comes to teaching my children facts. If they want to be religious, sure. I wont stop them. But magical 'beliefs' are different from empirical evidence and proven facts. If they want to survive in the more and more competitive world, they need education which stresses the importance of knowledge and facts. Coincidentally, Turkey and USA (which both have an influential religious right, one christian, one islamic, which wants to revert their country and it's values to the middle ages) are the two least-accepting countries when it comes to the evolution 'theory'.

I assume you just skipped over BlueLancer's post, right? Evolution is as much of a theory as Gravity or atoms are a theory. n scientific usage, a theory does not mean an unsubstantiated guess or hunch, as it can in everyday speech. A theory is a logically self-consistent model or framework for describing the behavior of a related set of natural or social phenomena. It originates from or is supported by experimental evidence (see scientific method). In this sense, a theory is a systematic and formalized expression of all previous observations, and is predictive, logical, and testable. As such, scientific theories are essentially the equivalent of what everyday speech refers to as facts. In principle, scientific theories are always tentative, and subject to corrections or inclusion in a yet wider theory. Commonly, a large number of more specific hypotheses may be logically bound together by just one or two theories. As a general rule for use of the term, theories tend to deal with much broader sets of universals than do hypotheses, which ordinarily deal with much more specific sets of phenomena or specific applications of a theory.
