It's good that your teacher challenges your ideas, it makes you think about what you believe and helps you think for yourself. When I did Modern Studies(which consists of politics) at high school, our teacher challenged our beliefs and views constantly no matter what they were and no matter how they reflected/conflicted with his own opinions, constantly playing devils advocate with us.

 

 

 

What did was make us think for ourselves rather than doing what alot of people do - just blindly follow the beliefs of our families/parents.

 

 

 

 

 

Challenging your opinion is very different from forcing a belief on you.

Teachers do that. It's really bad in college in Economics classes where they are all socialist. You pretty much just have to ignore it.

As a teacher, I can say that turning the lecturn into a personal soapbox is a sure fire way to get fired.

 

 

 

You are there to teach them unbiased facts, not spread your own personal agenda.

 

 

 

If you want to flex the student's political views, let them have some nice controlled debates for a grade (assuming your class can handle it). The one subject you should avoid is abortion, however, since students are not mature enough to debate it properly. The same could be said for origins, but that's discretionary. I probably wouldn't start that debate in Texas, and I really shouldn't since I teach history and it's a non-issue.

 

 

 

But Social Studies classes usually have debating potential. Ask your teacher to try to set it up if they have time in the unit plans.

She is a high school teacher? Then tell her the honest truth -- that what she is doing doesn't belong in a literature class.

 

 

 

Calmly warn her that she is wasting time that could be spent on lit. Tell her that it's great to practice freedom of speech, but make it clear that you are in a literature class where students are to study literature, not hear about PETA. If the discussion gets very heated and she doesn't seem to be changing her "lessons" then stand up, say goodbye politely, and go straight to the principal's office to tell them what you're teacher is doing.

 

 

 

Speak out and others will follow. :)

 

 

 

If it were me, I would wait it out a few weeks, trying to have some good class debates on the subject before I try to stop her. :lol:

To be honest, I believe in freedom of speech, but only to those who want to hear it.

 

 

 

Everyone has a right to eat meat. The only difference between us and vegetarians/vegans is that they don't exercise that right. However teachers (and anyone else for that matter) have no right to change that. Eating meat is not evil, just treating animals badly is.

 

 

 

Personally I think it is somewhat unhealthy to be a vegan, and even being outright vegetarian is being slightly paranoid. However, I have a friend who classifies himself as vegetarian, but does eat meat if he knows exactly where it has came from. We had this school trip ('agricultural studies', apparently) where we visited a farm which kept cows in very humane conditions, from start to finish. At the end, we had a barbecue, with sausages which came from that farm (and may I say they were the best sausages I have ever tasted), and my friend had third helpings. Now that's the right way to be vegetarian, even if it does bend the definition slightly.

 

 

 

But OT, that teacher should leave his own personal views out of the class unless it is a subject which allows for debates. Other than that, report him to the head, or whoever you feel is in a position to take those kind of complaints.

Well, I'm hoping that it just happened yesterday, and we'll never go back to it again, but, I'll have to wait till next week.

 

 

 

Yeah, that's like one of the major reasons it pissed me off was that it was in the middle of lit class, not like lunch or something, but in our class, and it was hard for me to just ignore her, because some of the other kids were eating her [cabbage] and talking about how horrible it is, blah, blah, blah; and looking through my "PETA AnimalTimes Magazine" that she gave us, the main story is about how Ringling beats elephants. So what does peta do about it? They're going to drive around a van with some redneck dude holding a crowbar and an elephant on the side :lol:

Quite honestly, if one of my teachers threw the PETA propaganda speech at the class, I'd laugh the whole time. I know it's wrong, but I'm too disrespectful sometimes :XD:

Better yet, wear that shirt evey day you have her class, even if it is just her class and not the whole day.

 

 

 

But yea, teachers aren't supposed to do this, or even allowed to do it. In 7th grade, my teacher told us, when we tried to get him to, that he can't ell us anything about his political views, because it might influence us, and they don;t want that to happen. So yea, definetely talk to your principal/headmaster and get this straightened out. Bad teacher :shame:

Oh well in that case, yes you are right. If he student isn't asking, then ya, the teacher shouldn't really be saying anything. But to go so far as to say they should be fired over this is a little absurd right.
