I totally agree with this article. It's like, you hear someone talk on rs, right click their name, see if it's red or green, and that determines your actions to him/her. It's kinda like in rl, people date other people cuz their looks, not their personality. The more handsome/pretty they are (or the higher their level), the more people like them.

Kool article, but as bryguy27007 said, it wasn't too spectacular. Had a point though.

I think it hit the nail on the head, and may even make the average 'elder' think about why he/her is actually complaining, instead of complaining from fear of change.

Yeah...Some people just go out of their way to ruin other peoples fun.
Sounds like Jagex to me...

...even if it̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s for the better. People seem to have the idea that everything was perfect they way they had it when they were younger. Take this attitude and mix it with the attitude of the youth that seems to encourage ignorance and satisfaction that comes with doing things differently, and it̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s no wonder that the youth and their elders (or level 10s and level 100s) never really get along.

Well, many people often have different definitions. You need to agree on definitions to debate an issue. Because 'better' is inherently ambiguous (better for who?), you really aren't arguing anything there.

Look at it this way: different people often want the same thing, but believe in different ways in going about achieving it. An excellent example is Republicans and Democrats in U.S. politics--they both want what's best for America, but simply believe in different ways to get it, or even what 'better' is.

You think this is a good article? What, does your normal reading criterea primarily include a nutrition chart (which definitely held more information than this), because this was pathetic.

First of all it stated no sourced and had a very 'it's Christmas, let's kiss and make-up' attitude. This and the writer's unjustly comparison with semi-senile elderly with players that have dedicated well over five years of experience, has caused this little rant on my part.

Who am I to say such a thing?

I am Isra's son - I introduced the game to her. I started playing just before the introduction of fishing as a skill, before adamantine battle-axes were released in Port Sarim, and I think sometime after the Delrith was released. When PvP included killing people in the Varrock streets (which immediately dropped the possessions of the killed with everyone able to vulture).

I quit playing when Isra shadowed my character's level - but I never stopped watching her play, and had her keep me updated. I've seen and heard everything. I've been around.

Now one complaint has always come from the good old days. Quit catering to lower players, the game system was fine and worked for the older players. There were even large protest trains created - but Jagex felt that in order to attract newer players, that this action made perfect sense. This 'catering' has devalued a person's ability to level and gain social repoire - simply it has become TOO EASY for the (I won't be shy with using this word) newbies to level.

There is no respect anymore. People buy and sell accounts, people immerse themselves in guides and bots instead of earning anything themselves, and it is a disgusting time to see such people claim to be better than everyone else.

This is why you're wary, and we're wary, of triple-digit players - it's hard to say who's earned what.

One thing's for sure. I'll be damned if I'll respect that lvl 63 in dragon plate, before I witness someone more fitting to wear armor of such prestige. Then again, however, level doesn't matter when everything's given on a silver platter.

There was AWE in the old days when ancients like Bluerose13x mistress of smithing(of which there were hundreds of scammer look-a-likes), Alchemon the fighter, Muahahaha (spelling) the priest, and etcetera - there was awe. People begged just to screenshot next to them, swooned if they were addressed directly.

So am I 'lamenting,' YES. Not without good cause though. I'm not asking that everything go back to the way it was - you should just take due look at yourself and realize what you've become.

Do you dance with all your best armor in newbie towns?

Do you even have an idea of Runescape's past?

Do you remember the darker times? (1-day chat filter, knife hack exploit, the blackhole of no return)

Then why should the younger generation, right? I mean they can gain their levels in a week in what would take you three months.

This article was rediculous, we shouldn't just simply forget the many wrongs that are still occuring. The writer didn't make any specific examples, and even used irrelevant history to bemuse readers. If you all think this is a good article, agree with the writer, then you are a noob - because simply, this is what the article was biased towards. "Screw the elderly and their misings, who cares anyway?"

You all disgust me. I'd rather have never levelled a point past 50 than be associated with the younger generation. But make one thing sure, if you're at the wrong end of a demon whip - don't complain, because Runescape staff might listen.

You stopped playing back in the stone ages... right? Then why would you care what Jagex has done to the game?

The old game had its share of bots and people who sold accounts and items also. Simply put it into some perspective... there were probably close to 20,000 players at the start of 2002. (if that many) Now there are over 9,000,000(Including free and members... granted the 20 k was before members came out).

Had Jagex decided to continue to hold onto their old programming styles, do you seriously think there would be even remotely close to that many players now? Not a chance. Jagex has evolved a lot, some of it good and some of it not quite as desired. I think they have done a remarkable job considering the game was and still is a Java based game.

Thinking about what you did a year or even a few months ago is like an adventure and interesting to see whats changed. Although I wouldn't want my rs character back in that state.

I find it very interesting to read this thread. The people here are split between new players and old timers in almost the same way as real life is split between the young and the old. If someone here says "I can't respect a level 60, I have been playing since 2001" then a younger player is quick to snap back with a "no one cares about the past, stop reminiscing". It's almost a to-the-letter snapshot of what occurs in RL culturally between today's teenagers and their parents. I don't know if the editor planned this or anything, but it's genius.

2003676992682512083_rs.jpg

It's right on a couple of things, but misses the real point.

The point is: "old timers" did not fell in love with the Runescape we have now, they fell in love with the Runescape we had years ago. Then Runescape changed and stopped being the Runescape they loved. It's that simple.

Ah....The Old Days, how can I forget those? when I first started playing, so exited about the game....and so now I'm so experienced with it, I get a feeling of nostalgia :P

_p3_minato_arisato_signature__by_x0sandylicious0x-d3hnk6v.png

ahh, i remember joining in 2003. on my first account "dozer enzo". i never really asked for things, my higher lvl friends where more of a "wanting to give me things" to show off their 30smithing :s. now almost 5years later and 3 accounts later playing on my long ago pure, i cant re-call not knowing everything about this game, i never go walking and find something knew, never find out theres a new weapon that came out months ago :s. i miss the ignorance of not knowing wat rs is. and logging in to learn something new everytime. when i get questions like "WHATS that sword" it tends to be from a lvl 70 and i look back at those days and i mess with him, because at lvl 70 u bet ur but i knew wat the heck a dlong was :/

Not a bad read, and I remember those good ole days when I was lvl 3 and when i died, i missed my tinderbox the most ::'

Retired from runescape. I will be on every now and then though. :)

I thought the article was great. I do find it amusing the attitudes some people have.

Put very simply, the only two things you need to be good at Runescape are lots of time and a high boredom threshold.

Given those two things, anyone can become a level 126. Naturally then, as time goes on, there will be more high level characters. That would be a fact of life even if there were no changes.

What clearly annoys some of the older players is that Jagex has made it easier to level up. As in 'these newer players have it too easy'. But quite frankly, levelling up at high levels can get excrutiatingly boring. I think anything Jagex does to make it easier is good. How many people do you know who got to a certain level then quit because it got boring?

If I see updates like 'smith all' then I'm really happy, both for me and for the lower lvls who won't have to go through the tedium that I experienced.

My other point is when you are a newbie you don't notice other people being noobish, because you don't know any better. Naturally as you get more experienced their behaviour becomes more noticeable. Myself, I always try to help lower level players if they ask nicely. I can remember how I felt at lvl 20 when a high level guy gave me a mithril axe for free. I thought he was so generous. Now I just leave mith axe drops lying on the ground so I can afford to be that guy. Isn't it nicer to spread happiness rather than being miserable all the time?

I never know what to write in these signature-type things...

i rmember those days, it was when you can get iron ore for 15gp each

And well, uhm ... Where are those f2p polls? I wanna see 'em.

By the 1800 the United States was already a country and well established. I highly doubt that anyone was saying it was saying: "̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬ÅBah, all these young̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢uns running off to live in unexplored lands in the Americas, when I was a kid we cared about England and only England!̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ

In my opinion while attitudes may be worse game play has improved. Sure we all said "I'm gonna get 99 everything" back while we were having to click on the net, click on the fishing spot, click on the net....... How many actually did it? What's the point in a game noone can beat? If you spend 5 years or more playing it and you only accomplish half or less 99 skills after spending all your time online what's the point? Honestly I'd rather have a game I can beat. I'd be quite happy by now if I had all 99s and could just quit knowing I accomplished "beating" the game. I doubt it will ever happen unless they continue to make things easier because I'm not going to keep playing this game and paying members for another 5years ($300) just to get there. I get bored when most games take more than a week to make maximum level. The gameplay wasn't better in the old days. It was harder, different, and caused wrist injuries. It's sure improved. Now as for attitude that just comes with having more people and more inexperienced players at a time. The more people you concentrate into an area the more differences of opinion and arguments you have and the less people worry about looking good or doing the right thing because they can always go find someone else to be their friend. Same thing happens in rl as it has in rs. The more people that move into the area the more trouble everyone has getting along.

Now I have to admit I was definitely that stupid when I started playing. I still remember my first few weeks playing and several of the mistakes I've made along the way. Has it been 7years? The december before phats were dropped. I spent 2 days lost north of lumbridge wandering around repeatedly commenting on how lost I was to see if anyone would offer to help. Finally someone took me to varrock and handed me a pick. Then I spent a week mining next to varrock because I didn't know how to get anywhere else or what to do. Eventually I found the world map and managed to figure out where things were. Then when trying to sell coal my first time I not only spammed the screen as fast I could type but I was off by a zero and repeatedly showed my multiplication error for about 15mins before someone yelled at me. I snuck away quietly. New players haven't gotten any dumber or younger there are just more of them. The ratio of new players to experienced players, and hopefully with that experience more maturity and intelligence, has gotten higher with every year that goes by.
