You should have also a real interest in taking up classes even if you're not in school or not, doesn't matter. I'd give you a magical site if there was one, but there isn't. Anyways, you can use this site for some Japanese basics. I've been learning it for some 5 years now... And I'm not even nearly fluent :lol: There's some 50,000 kanji signs.. I'm not even trying to learn them all, about 1000-2000 basic ones is enough to read a newspaper etc. Since you're beginning to learn Japanese, you should first learn katakana+hiragana. That's what even Japanese kids are taught first. If you forget a kanji sign, which is likely, you can just write it in hiragana. If you're more interested in the phonetic side, check out this site. Click on "Grade 1" first, that site is very extensive. Just by looking at a site such as that can help you determine how serious you really are about learning Japanese (or a new language at all). Ambassadar Posted December 10, 2007 Share Posted December 10, 2007 I haven't been exposed to Japanese much but I went to China a while back and it felt so weird in terms of language. If I went somewhere in Europe or South America I would be able to at least read a road sign or deduce basic things that were written. When visiting China and other Asian countries not only do you not speak the language but you get the experience of feeling absolutely illiterate. As an avid reader and craver of knowledge it felt really strange just all of a sudden becoming illiterate for two and a half weeks. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Watch movies you seen before in english but in whatever you want so you're familiar with what they're about to say. The whole it isn't an overnight process thing, is something I kind of figured out a long time ago. They use "immersion" techniques that really, really helped me learn spanish fast. TBH...why do you want to learn Japanese :P to hard Listen to the mighty words of Bloodredsword. The best way would be to go the country whose language you want to learn, and study there, but there are other ways. Here are a few examples: Listen to French radio, subscribe to french podcasts. See movies in French. Read French webpages. Read French books. Read French newspaper. Get in touch with someone French over the internet, chat with him over msn, possibly with mic! Select a subject that interests you, and see if there's any French content about it on the internet. To practice, I just change wikipedia to Hangul and read, and that worked really well. I'll be taking classes eventually and hope to get a book on Korean so I can speak and learn some words though. Unfortunately my college does not offer any second language courses, and I'm poor as hell. Unfortunately my college does not offer any second language courses, and I'm poor as hell. Since you live in the US, try Spanish instead. Not to mention it's easier to learn compared to Japanese.
