Any need for countdown between switching server?

Don't think it would be a good idea.

Some skills like mining still require world hopping for "increased" profits such as rune mining. If there were no limit on the hop speed I could theoratically get millions a hour mining rune compared to the measly 400k or so a hour I get from the current system at good conditions (if I often hit unmined worlds and such).

The 35 second delay is to leave enough time for your profile to transfer between servers.

No it's not. It might say that, but it's not.

If the delay was completely removed, there would probably be problems with the game not saving before you logged into the other world.

Yep. This is one of Jagex's many "little white lies". It's complete nonsense.

It was put in there to slow down world hopping, period.

If you had any knowledge of programming you would probably agree with me.

Wow, sorry Mr Einstein but when I started playing this didn't happen.

+1

If you have a different idea you need facts to back it up :S

Though it is used by Jag to make limits.

The world hopping wasn't in the game until like 3-4 years after RS had already been around... it has nothing to do with your character transferring or "saving." They only included it because people could hop servers and buy runes and other raw materials from shops for cheap prices and then when they had alot of them sell them to players for jacked up prices.... thats how i got my first set of full rune, buying feathers from the fishing shop in port sarim and re-selling for 50 each.... that hasnt' worked since before rs2 though.

you can get millions an hour if you know all the tricks to rune mining.

its nothing fun though, i consider it the most boring thing to do on rs, you have to make all sorts of calculations and track each world that you visited.

but if you remove the hop speed it would increase the profits so much that even the past staking would cower in fear.

i calculated about 25mil per hour if you remove the world hop, i guess that could be a reason i dunno.......... :(

EDIT: forgot about the number of worlds, i guess 10 years from now when theres enough worlds then 25mil an hour will be possible lol.

theres over 50 member worlds too lazy to count but that makes it 1mil every 12 mins which is 5mil per hour.

since im so nice ill let you know that its possible to get 110 rune ores every hour at this point in time which is 1.3mil per hour.

and if you have any idea how hard it is to do and call it overpowered then ill call you crazy, its so hard and complex its impossible to auto.

making that amount of money in a hour would be like getting 91 runecraft by the effort of how to do it, of course im not going to reveal the secret to lessen my profits though.

Nope, this was never the case when i started playing, so I can't seem to see the difference now. And if it has now been bought in because the map is bigger or something, then why hasn't it increased in recent times?

anyway heres the answer for the topic.

autoers could do this world hopping at an amazing speed and in the past there was no unlimited general store stuff.

it was there also to stop rune miners since they already did the calculations.

and for whatever other secrets are out there.

I think that you're right, Jordanweb. I think that the game needs some time to save. But I'm not a Java expert, so I might be wrong.

At the beginning, with a small number of servers the time to transfer profile would have been extremely low. With the increase in the number of servers, the window to save the profile needs to be bigger.

I'm sure, though, that the 30 seconds choice is mainly to limit profits that can be made as mentioned by others above. I'd suggest that it could be quite safely halved without affecting the saving of profiles. I don't think it would be able to be removed completely without them rearchitecting how profile updates happen.

If you had been playing the game longer than 5 minutes you would have known that for more than 4 years there was no limit at all. The limit was put on by Jagex to stop people/bots hopping and buying out the shops stock. They admitted this on the front page at the time of the update.

there are 7 log in servers that store the infomation about out account, every 20mins this data is backed up so incase of a server crash we will only lose upto 20mins of game play. it does not do the whole lot at once as it would be too much but alternates saving each player group every few mins.

This is why when they preform maintainance on one of the servers they put up a message explaining that one in 7 players will lot be able to log in for a while.

When we log out of our accounts it backs up all of our data that has been done with the last few mins of game play (after the last time your account was saved). although it's a petty quick proses the servers need a short period of time to save the data, and get it in a state ready to send back out to another game server,

So when you log into a new world your server has to make a request to the login server for your account variables, if however you have just come from another world they allow a small amount of time to make sure that the infomation is correctly saved and ready for use.

The amount of time needed for this is a tiny fraction of a second.

Jagex finds it easier to lie to its customers than be honest with them and risk them being unhappy. This pattern has been repeated countless times, especially in the last year.

I remember when Jagex added the log-in wait.

I had been server hopping to mine silver VERY quickly in the crafting guild for making holy symbols.

Jagex stated roughly:

"We are adding a server wait time because we think it is unfair that those players with a faster internet connection can hop between servers faster then dial up players."

I used to have about 6 worlds tabbed up, and would circulate between them VERY quickly to get silver ores.

Notice how if you hop a world the wait is about 15 seconds, but if you do ANOTHER hop it goes up even more?

If the wait time was SOLELY for transferring a character, there would be no reason for the second transfer to take even longer.

It was made to stop the unfair advantage of cable modem server hoppers.

"Here lies one whose name was writ in water."

It's the time needed to transfer your avatar between servers.

wrong, that takes about .5 seconds, i can logout and look myself on the highscores and my stats are already updated.

also since you are jordanweb are new and know so much about programming, you could switch worlds very fast in rs1 and early rs2.

then they updated the limit to stop autoers, rune miners, and merchanters.

I think it serves multiple purposes. It may be the case that because of the higher number of worlds, and larger maps, it may take more time. Also, it means that those with faster connections could take advantage over those with slower ones.

It also keeps profits from going sky-high in some skills which require world hopping. Oh, and it hinders bots too.

Some of these reasons are obsolete, but I'm worried that lag will occur if they completely remove it. However, I agree that 35 secs is a bit much.

Maybe the best way to do this would be to reduce the countdown to about 10 seconds? I'm sure that would keep everyone happy while still keeping the lag-demon from hell at bay.
