Angry Old Man - Part Two

Part One

A friend of mine, who we shall now call Bob, had some friends over for drinks, since the party we planned on going to a few streets up was invitation only. The group contained only close friends, and it wasn't an outrageous party or anything of that nature. A few of us, me included, walked up to the shops for a short time.

As we arrived back at Bob's house, Almost the entire group was outside, being abused by AOM (Angry Old Man), as well as two other people who I assume lived with him. His small, wooden letterbox had been pushed on an angle, and he blamed one of the people from our group, even though his house is located on a main street, with many passers by.

As I got closer, one of the girls from our group, who I shall call Sally, tried to break up the argument, and try to move our group back inside. AOM's verbal onslaught was now directed at her. His language was particularly foul, and Sally is one of my good friends, so I was not going to tolerate that.

I walk up to him, and told him not to talk to Sally like that (although my language was probably more colourful). He then lunged at me, and grabbed me by the throat. I pushed him back, and kept pushing him as he was not letting go. This was then interrupted by a mate of mine, Ben, who, jumped on him, taking him to the ground, and throwing a few connectionless punches, as he was pulled off in seconds.

[hide=Orignal of Part One]

So last night, we were having a few drinks at a mates place, since there were no parties on. 30 or 40 people, not too much. A couple of us walk up to the shops and hung around their for half an hour or so.

We walk back to the house and discover that the rest of the group is outside, being abused by the next door neighbors. Their letter box had been slightly bent out of place, and apparently it was one of us.

Anyway, one of the abusive neighbors was an old man, I'd say around 65 years old. He was being particularly abusive to a couple of girls from our group, swearing and name calling and such.

I didn't approve of that at all, so I walk up to him and told him to not talk to them like he was. All of a sudden he clicks it, charges at me and grabs me by the throat. I had a few drinks in me, so i pushed him back, ready to hit him. One of my other mates then jumps in, pushes him to the group and jumps towards him, but was held back by the rest of us.

Now even though this senior citizen started the physical contact, if I had hit him, would it have been justified? Post your thoughts. :?[/hide]

Part Two.

It has been a week since the incident, and a lot of information has been discovered.

'Angry Old Man' is not as old as we had thought. He is a father of someone around our age, so around 55 years of age I would estimate.

Though this is not as great as it sounds. AOM and his son associates themselves with some of the more violent Lads (or chavs) of our area. Somehow these people have gotten Ben's phone number, and have been calling him all week with death threats and such.

The day after Christmas we went to a party, only to get thrown out 20 minutes later. When Ben had shown up, one of the Lads walked up to him and slapped him, hoping Ben would throw the first punch. He knows better then to fight these people, so he walked out to leave, and we follow him.

In a matter of seconds, two of them ran outside to fight Ben. Ben ran towards his car, parked a street up. The two Lads run after him, so I, and two other boys I was with ran after them. Ben gets away in his car, but one of them gets in theirs and follows him.

Ben got home safely in the end. But I wonder whats in store over the next few weeks. #-o

Note: Names have been changed for their own protection. For all I know, some of the highest gang members of the Shire could be Tip.it Members. :P

Hmmm interesting. The guy shouldn't have been so angry and abusive. You would of had a good reason to hit him but violence is never the answer. Your neighbor probably has anger problems or something bad happened to him. He shouldn't have much of a reason to verbally abuse part of your group and charge you just because of a little party.

I don't know the full story either so I can't full judge.

don't know australian laws..

You had a few drinks, damage was done to the neighbours property while you weren't there...

in belgium, your group would be 'disturbing the peace'

I don't mind people for being drunk, but when they start harassing me, or damage my property, i'ld be pissed myself...

don't know 100% of what happened, but i can't really blame the old man.

respect your elders (not in the biblical way).

I don't really know the full story. I mean, if they were being loud and it was at night I'd be pretty pissed too, especially if I was trying to get some sleep.

But like I said, I don't know the full story so I can't really judge either way.

I'm sure if he attacked you first and you retaliated as self defence with witnesses around you, you would be safe from the law, however this reminded me of this joke;

old men don't have erection problems, its just the fact that old women are so very ugly.

Are you [developmentally delayed]ed or something?

If you think a point is so self-evidently incorrect as to merit some moronic "lolwut" comment, then make sure it actually is. Although there are always exceptions [absolutely necessary self-defense [[for another person]], etc.], I generally also agree with the rule that all other options excluding violence should be examined first, if the time to do so is given.

Older people tend to be scared of the younger generation.

He was probably thinking that you did it because you're wild hoodlums and he wasn't going to let you get away with it.

Not that it's true, but that's what a lot of old people think.

Now that's just Horsedoodling. Violence is always the answer.

But if you attacked his mailbox, he can call the police on you. Interfering with anything having to do with the mail is illegal, at least in the US.

Either he was just being an arse for the reasons that old people usually are(Denial of aging/demands for respect or attention), or he was pissed off because he got woken up. Self defense only really works when you are in some sort of danger; after you pushed him back, you really can't do much unless he goes for you again. :|

There is no meaning or truth in life but that which we create for ourselves.

If you hit him, i would say its justified, but the way the police see it it wouldn't have been....

Anywaaay, i always try not to injure other people, unless i really have to. But looks like you handled it right :D

I'm still wondering how you can call 30-40 people partying in a suburban house 'not that many.'

That's what I'm thinking, to most people thats a damn lot of people to fit into a house.

A group of rowdy teenagers destroyed some of his property, of course he is going to be pissed. I wish he would have punched you in the face, it would have been a good lesson.

Agreed, although grabbing your neck was pretty stupid lol.

I don't think I've seen Abyssal make one intelligent post ever, and about 90% of his posts are stupid spam responses like this one. Can you get banned for being a moron?

Yeah, that's the first thing that stood out to me too. Seems like it was just an attempt to downplay the situation. But 30 to 40 people in any kind of house party is a huge number, no matter how "cool" you are, and bound to get very loud.

Not enough details there to know for sure, but it seems like the neighbor was justified in being angry and it was late at night. And man, did you and your friend really start roughhousing with a senior citizen?

30 or 40 people is actually a lot of people to have over at your house at night. :P Especially if your neighbors are trying to sleep. He had no right to come over there cursing and yelling and all that stuff. And I think that if you had hit him, you would have been cleared legally (since he started it) but, you'd still look like a jerk for hitting an old guy.

I am a young teenager, and most elderly people seem to have it in their heads that most teenagers are alcoholic drug takers who want to smash their windows in. That is obviously not the case.

Yesterday I got on the bus and there was a woman waiting so I let her on in front of me and then got on behind her, I then heard two elderly women talking to each other how all young kids were disrespectful. I found this quite annoying. Yes, respect your elders, but the respect has to go both ways. On the other hand, my next door neighbours are 90 years of age, and I get along with them a lot. We get Christmas presents and birthday presents off them and we give to them, I think of them as grandparent figures in my life. So some elderly people do think that teenagers are pain in the buts but some are really nice. There is a generation gap, and when we are their age we will probably complain about the new generation, it doesn't look like it will change in the near future.

Something i notice in belgium: alot of elders with a head full of wrong things.

-they see someone with different colour of skin, and think he's a burglar.

-they see a guy with a piercing and think he's a rapist (my gf's grandmother really thinks like that)

-they see a group of kids, and think they're disrespectful drug abusers and potential "piercing-guys".

I guess it's just the time they grew up in. Don't trust anything that's strange..

Thinking like that lead, and is leading, to alot of problems in society.

Thanks for the replies.

I was judging 30-40 as small, because 10 of them had come in two cars for only about half and hour then left, and the rest of us is just our group of close friends. Also I was considering it small because it wasn't a party.

As i said in first post, the letter box was slightly bent out of place. It is one of those small wooden ones, and had been apparently pushed on an angle by one of us. There had been many other passes by as well, because there was an actual party just a few streets away (we couldn't get in ).

A group of rowdy teenagers destroyed some of his property, of course he is going to be pissed. I wish he would have punched you in the face, it would have been a good lesson.

What's the lesson? Don't be a teen when there is property damage near you? Don't look out for a friend?

I personally see it as your fault for getting a large group of people together and drinking. If you are gonna drink, stay inside or something.

The majority of the group was inside, or out in the backyard. Regardless of that, how can we be guilty just because we were present?

did you and your friend really start roughhousing with a senior citizen?

 It sounds terrible, doesn't it?

How old? Like 50? 60? What?

Depending on how old, I wouldn't justify hitting him unless he was posing a serious threat. At certain ages, even though it may not quite seem it, mental health deteriorates, memory starts becoming a problem(Not full blown Alzhiemers yet, but it can be an early sign), that causes a lot of confusion and anger, and in an area thats loud and crowded I can see hostility as a result.

If that does happen its best to try to calm him down and speak softly(Though in your situation I don't see that as possible) unless of course you think he could do serious harm to you or someone else.

It's because they are from a different time. You have to remember, the world 60 or 70 years ago was a lot different -- only recently has equality really started to show. Most of the people are who quite old were just raised that way.

I'm not saying it isn't wrong, but when you grow up like that for so long it's tough to not have that idea in your head.
