jagex on a soap box about global warming *found after loss*

Featured Replies

before the disclaimer-here is the pre-tampered forum thread of what this topic was originally. http://209.85.215.104/search?q=cache:FW ... cd=3&gl=us i suggest you read that before anything else. because it's a little more ehm... populated

now before i get into this i should say that- i do not have firm opinions that don't contradict each other. so basically i'm on the median on global warming. i support alternative fuels but i also don't like the transition every one would have to make. i also think that global warming is a theory just with really good evidence. like the theory of pangea (super continent) i know that i'm going to get like 600000 people saying omg yanxrul you idiot you know nothing about a and b. whatever. i'm entitled to my opinion.

THE REAL REASON TO THE POST Shocked - the new quest is kind of a controversial one to me. if you haven't done it or you breezed through it and didn't know what the hell was going on let me tell you the short and sweet version.

theres a guy that has a machine that can make pick axes but it uses a fuel that pollutes the world. this fuel happens to be coal that is force fed into baby dragons that in turn make a flame at an extraordinary rate. he doesn't want to change anything.

after continuous use of this world polluting fuel it starts to have an impact on other places. ice mountain is the first to show it by the rose bushes at the monastery die because they are used to cold weather but because of the warming they're dieing off. an avalanche and it destroys the oracles house. then ice fiends start to die off. the oracle also says after you fix her tent that got destroyed in the avalanche that theres going to be deserts from varrok to lumby. entrana is apparently going to go under the water and such. and finally- temperature change is felt in other places such as the gnome stronghold/village (not clear which one)

ok so after the whole problems are temporarily dealt with, you go to a guy that had an idea for a replacement energy that requires no fuel. it's a windmill. omg right? so you help him get his idea to a guy and he helps get the company use the windmill instead of the polluting fuels. the guy eventually tells you why there were global temperature risings. and then luke finds out darth vader is his father

ok great.

now lets make the similarities between real life and runescape. it'll be easy i promise.

icefiends=polar bears drowning in the poles. eventually might become extinct

gnome village= the poles at the bottom south of the real world (earth)

replacement fuel=wind energy that is used today (wind farms)

polluting energy= fossil fuels such as coal, and charcoal. whatever else there is like oil.

oracle predictions= scientist predictions that could happen from continuous use of these fuels. things like desertification, hurricanes, global temperatures rising, coastal cities going below sea level, lots of people dieing. great.

the pick axe company= big market companys that don't want to make the switch from oil/coal to this newish energy that's less costly and require less fuel and such.

you= the person that can "make a difference" in the world by spreading the word and such.

now i'd like your opinion on what you think on the whole- if you want a questcape or be able to make a pickaxe in runescape then hear our views on the topic of global warming thing. i think that jagex is getting the right message out but... i don't know i still am edgy about global warming.

ALSO- please do not tell us about all the other bad stuff that comes with global warming. unless what you say pertains to what i asked just.. don't say anything about what could/would/will happen because i'm like about to vomit from all of the media force feading you all of this. Sick

Wow, watching this thread is better than pro wrestling! =D>

This thread is probably better than pro wrestling because the fights here are real (And the boobs).

I thought putting those references to global warming was very inappropriate. Though the message is noble, it is simply not the right place to put something like that, and it's going to achieve nothing. Add that to "Smoking kills", just stop, people don't play to get lectured.

Well, Jagex is just trying to do the right thing. I know I personally don't like it. It makes me feel that Jagex is trying too hard. :|

If you did the quest you'd know it had NOTHING to do with smoking-it was just a little play-on-words, aru

It does seem to me that Jagex does indeed believe in global warming. That quest really showed it. They had made a bit about global warming in a former quest I believe, but I can't remember what one.... I think it might have been cold war the penguins mentioned a bit... not entirely sure though.

I'm not a big quester and dislike all quests equally, but it looks like this one was especially "Inconvenient"! :D

I did the quest. And that's the point. It has nothing to do with smoking, yet Jagex felt the need to just put that in as title. It's simply inappropriate.

The global warming message is explicit but it is a premature thing as there is no irrefutable proof yet that CO2 causes global warming. They made their views clear, for the better or not.

But I ask, why do you feel it is inappropriate?

Whether you like it or not, games is progressively targeted by movement of all the different sorts. Most of which is safety issues. There was a game in Scotland where they had safe driving messages every time you turn it on.

Smoking kills. It is proven fact, I really do not see why it is a problem. RS age group is the next generation of smokers, putting it to a stop is the responsibility of everyone. Yes, this is clearly some form of propaganda but argue against fact makes you a moron as smoking cost the the health care millions a year. Is a quest name, it is not a contentious issue anymore, there is no problem. Sorry, but when I look at the numbers condemning smoking every day in my studies I'm literally pissed that kids are starting to smoke (age of 10 even) and these sort of messages is criticized because those people doesn't like a message or two about future heath problems.

And if you are being jumpy over global warming and smoking messages....then I could argue that RS is a propaganda for gods and religion as well. They are shoving me god items. Possibly I should be feeling aggrieved more as it is all over the game while global warming is only in one quest. Suspend reality for a while. Is not as though they are recruiting you to Greenpeace. And remember that message of the week? Where say rest 15 minutes every hour? People were whinging about it, hey genius, it is on the inside cover of the manual of console games, is not anything new.

You can't always expect games to be untouched by the powers of different movement, the serpent has long entered this Garden of Eden you still think the gaming industry is. Long as is not political movement where it is a bigger can of worms, why not? Kids playing RS aren't subjected to the same amount of safety or political notices than those who watch television.

Templar Guardians

When are trying to lend something, the word to use is borrow. Not barrows, which is a mini-game.

smoking kills is just a play on words.

if you look on the jagex website it says they are carbon neutral so they not hidding anything and its nothing new.

Their is another quest i would like to mention and it would be the last goblin arc were it looked at bandos. To me it seemed to be discrediting religion as a group of mindless thugs (goblins) who believe in war as the best way to solve problems and generally shown as being thick. While you have the undeground goblins who are depicted as wise and peacful because they don't look to a god.

I don't know why you guys are overrreacting... They have views, they have the opition to express those views in a game. After all, most media is expressing yourself right?

Its Jagex's game they can do what they want to it whether you like it or not!

we're not overreacting. we're having a simple discussion about how jagex expresses their views. and some of us (including myself) think that it wasn't conveyed correctly. i'm not going to go into WHY because i allready went into it.

basically we are just talking about how to observe to their views on global warming. global warming's a pretty controversial topic and yes you may say it's only a game but we're not caring about the game. I'm bringing up that jagex has the influence of thousands. i maybe have the influence of tens of people. that's it.

that's all. no over reactions. ;) (i think this was discussed before)

The quest about global warming was entirely about global warming. And while most quest names are (supposedly) funny, "Smoking kills" and the global warming quest are controversial and have no place in a game.

They also said that GWD opened up because too many people got 99 fm.

One thing I learned today: people overreact when told they overreact. Anyway, Jagex has a right to express their opinions, no matter how controversial it is. They can preach about Mohammad the Prophet for all I care, I would still play the game. You guys are overreacting because you can't take a opposing view. And so what if Jagex has influence over thousands? They influence not force. Jagex isn't saying to kids "Only you can prevent Global Warming." No, it just saying human activity is the cause of it with some evidence. If you want to counter-attack that agrument I guess you could stop playing or don't do that quest. They have a right to say what they think, no matter how much BS is global warming for they have the right to. Thats what I mean why are you guys overreacting.

Sure, you have a right to your opinion, but that doesn't make you totally and demonstrably wrong. The second sentence really disturbs me.

take smoking kills for example jagex like to create "unique" and creative names for quests.

NOW on topic what the hell are talking about

whatcolor_isblue.jpg

Good. This just makes me like them a little bit more. Its nice to see that they are willing to make statements about global issues, so cheers for them.

And I don't care if you're on the knife's edge of the two main GW opinions. Live and let live, eh? For the most part... As long as you aren't of the 'cl1mate ch4nge aRe a natral ting nd u are a teroristt 4 not wursheping teh gov3rNmet n' driv1n a humer' school, I really don't care.. ::'

Oh, and as to my views... Global warming is proven fact. The newspapers and news channels are run by pr firms working for the government and major companies, I don't listen to them. Most of the world is secretly controlled by international banking carte.... Wait, wrong thread.

But don't listen to me, every other person has their own deeply ingrained beliefs and viewpoints, some of which undoubtly are telling them that I'm a damn commie liberal treehugging far-left whacko terrorist.* Good. I like being all that more than being ignorant.

*Anyone who DOESN'T think this feel free to ignore this statement

There is no meaning or truth in life but that which we create for ourselves.

Considering where you're coming from and your beliefs, one would think that you'd have noticed by now that the large news chains widely spread the belief that global warming is caused by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. And that's the part that is unproven speculation. The planet is getting hotter, but why is up for grabs. Earth has existed for billions of years, and gone through all the times imaginable. To think that the huge changes happening right now are man-made from only the last 70 years is ridiculous beyond belief.

Its not inapproiate in the sense its rude or unnecesary.

But its alright because Jagex is trying to teach people through gaming.

I'm preety sure the 'Smoking Kills' is simply ment to refer to the quest.

But Runescape has alot of real world refrences, here are a few:

-Examine a rock Lobster: it refrences the song rock lobster

-Examine a rock crab: it refers to STDs 'no one likes crabs'

-Robin in Port Phyassmst: is a refrence to Robin Hood

-The Robin Hood hat: is a refrence to Robin Hood

-Sandromin: can be refered to the Christian God

-Gulthix: can be refered to Wicka, Druidism or Buddhism

-Zamorak: can be refered to Satan

-Mithril: can be a refernce to Lord of the Rings

-The Fremeniks: can be refered to the Vikings

-The Gnome-Khazard war: can be refered to the war in Iraq (or any war)

-The Grand Tree Quest: can be a refrence to pollution

-The Tower of Light: refers to the science of Alchemy

-Agility: can be used as a refrence to players on the importance of being physically fit

-Getting stunned or attacked when thieving: can be used to show why its wrong to steal

-Greater, Lesser Demons: can be refered to as satanic daemons

-The sheild of Arrav: can be used to show the disputes between gangs

-High and Low alchemy: are also refrences to the science of Alchemy

-Duel Arena: can be used as a refrence to teach the danger of gambeling

The List is endless

only 2 skills below level 50 :)

first i will tell u all i believe in global warming but i find this totally irresponsible to talk about it in a game. this is because not everyone shares this opinion and as a company u want to avoid offending some of ur clients.

this is not as controversial as it is not as blantantly obvious like the global warming quest. they didnt decide to have a quest that would have treated atheism as the ideal for a society

and we should not treat everything we see and hear with suspicion, even though there are real world references we should not tie everything to something that they might not mean. this is a reason i hated english class and those books and texts that force u to see hidden symbols left and right.
