Here a few game refrences to thous that play[ed] COD4

It's vey intersting, a necular plant blew up and this city got infected by radiation, almost killing them all, but mostly giving all of em cancer.

Discuss.

Chernobyl is, unfortunately, the reason why we have almost no nuclear power plants in the United States. Nuclear power is one of the most efficient and SAFE ways to produce energy, but because of Chernobyl, many people are afraid of it because they don't know the real facts about it.

It wasn't russian if you want to be factually accurate: Ex. Soviet yes, but Chernobyl is located in Ukraine.

Also sort of related: It spawned one of the best horror FPS games: S.T.A.L.K.E.R - Shadow of Chernobyl, which is set in Ukraine right after a worst-case scenario has happened and Chernobyl completely destroyed everything around it.

But it works as a huge deterrent against nuclear power still to this day like mentioned above. It was an old soviet plant with insufficient security, but people are still scared of what happened.

Let's just say... If you get seriously exposed to nuclear radiation... Your offspring wont be pretty. You'll be lucky if they're even born alive, or have 3 heads, etc..

Haven't they found a radiation resistent slime near Chernobyl? I think I remember reading something about it.

Yeah, I heard something, was...feeding on the radiation?

When I asked about Chernobyl in my 7th grade science class, my teacher mentioned a similar place called "Love Canal" that was abandoned because of either pollution or radiation. However, I haven't been able to find any sources to validate this.

when he said love canal I thought he meant something different \'

Between chernobyl and 3 mile island, everyone seems to think nuclear power is some huge dangerous evil thing thats always ready to go off like an atomic bomb which is not even possible (unless you set off a bomb many times as powerful as the tzarr (sp?) bomb (largest ever detonated).

Faulty design and human error. Reactor technology has come so far, now we have such reactors as the CANDU and advanced CANDU (the former uses unenriched uranium and/or waste from conventional reactors). I don't know about oil fueled reactors but I do know that coal powerplants produce a decent ammount of radioactive waste, small ammounts of which often make it out the stacks (very small ammounts mind). I expect that any fosil fuel plant probably produces some degree of radioactive waste.

Can you explian to me how radioactive power plants work?

Just look at France, they are almost completely dependent on Nuclear power. They have NEVER ONCE had a nuclear fallout. It's the uneducated rural people of America that continue to petition because they "don't want those smoke stacks ruining their view".

thats not strictly true, solar power, wind power and hydro are all safer. There are also hazards regarding waste.

The US uses their all knowing hand to stop countries like iran and north korea from producing nuclear power, but its all  for them to do it?

The problem with solar and wind, they don't produce nearly as much power as nuclear and you have to place hydro plants in certain places.

North Korea doesn't want nuclear power, it wants nuclear missiles. Two very different things. One is good for people the other is not. With Iran being very religious and anti-American, I wouldn't trust them with the knowledge of creating nuclear power, since it can lead to nuclear weapons.

Those are not safer by any means. Trust me on this, I watched a 3 hour long video in my last chemistry class this year (our teacher was a huge nuclear power person). And we are not preventing them from nuclear power, just from developing nuclear weapons. Huge difference.

Besides, what reason would I have to lie about all this stuff? :| It's all fact if you want to go look for yourself instead of just using what you've "heard" from conversations with other people...

What happens when a nuclear plant gets bombed? it reallly smart to have a plant in iran/iraq at this moment?

If an entire nuclear plant explodes (explodes, from a bomb), a massive area will be infected and turned into a wasteland of fallout. I don't remember where I saw this, but a video showed that the area would be intensely infected with radiation approximately 100-150 miles surrounding the plant. Can anyone confirm this or find that video?

Winds carrying the radioactivity could make this region much, much larger.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Chernobyl to this day seems to spark fear in people about nuclear power when it really shouldn't. It's obsolete technology and human error was woeful. The reactors they build these days are much safer.

As for the chernobyl fungus:

http://www.scienceagogo.com/news/200704 ... _sys.shtml

I'd absolutely love to know how it soaks up ionizing radiation like gamma. I know melanin in humans soaks up UV radiation, converting it to heat, but gamma radiation? That's crazy. If it's legit, this fungus has found a niche no microbe will want to touch.
