Recreating RuneScape

Dear Tipiters,

"Would a world map remake be a good idea or not?" This have been awhile in my mind now and I think its good enough for a discussion with you guys & girls. RuneScape exists 9 years and I havent seen big changes to the world map, a new wall in Edgeville or a remake of Varrock aint that big. Some parts didnt change in the past 9 years! Lets discuss it.

Pro's

A recreation of the world would give Jagex a chance to make some area's better, some places don't get visited and could be placed somewhere else where they do.

Lots of things are changed so theres lots of stuff to explore.

Con's

Lots of work to change it all, story's of quest could get destroyed.

I say don't rebuild it. So many players know where almost everything is, and know exactly how to get to any certain place. Recreating the map would mean all those players would have to relearn the world map, relearn how to get everywhere, etc. It would be much batter if Jagex just expanded the map.

I would rather Jagex changed certain areas at a time. Not necessarily graphical updates, but, perhaps move and remodel things within towns. IE - Move the GE to center of varrock and have everything built around it. I would assume their code uses "if npc ==" meaning it wouldnt be too hard to fix many problems with quests / stories.

No thanks, I like where the GE is right now (Edgeville fairy ring ftw).

However, I don't think it would be a problem if they started to move some things further apart. Everything in Misthalin, Asgarnia and Kandarin is way too close (The middle of the map). It should be more like Karamja, Morytania and the Elven Lands, which are much more spread out and it actually takes effort to travel to places like Burgh de Rott.

varock tele ftw.....

The point is that you can LEAVE the GE via the fairy ring and go wherever. I can fight abyssal demons in the abyss, fairy ring to edge and sell the whip I get as a drop, buy some more potions, and then run right back. I would be pretty upset if there were no longer a fairy ring near the GE.

o/t but i think it'd be cool if the "world map", the one that's on the site, were made a sphere that you could rotate but that would limit the map's future development. but it would be neat to see anyway.

as for actually remapping runescape and putting things in other places, they've done that with the party room so it'll be done if they want to, but tbh things are well spread out and i like how the map is now.

for those people that have problems getting around i recommend doing fairy tale part II, the fairy rings are the way i get around now for the most part and they really open the map up bigtime once you start using them and learning the codes. as well, doing quests and their rewards, really helps your ability to travel in runescape.

Adding my comment, it seems that the guy directly above me said it more than I ever could have (and there's a compliment for you!). RuneScape is just boring. Though while we're here, why not make RS3? From the end of this miserable version with the whole RWT thing we can see where Jagex failed. Then we can make a better RS3, with a new beginning. And perhaps realise that RWT is impossible to stop in basically any game where there are at least two people who don't feel hostile to each other... ever.

True, True.

But still, i don't think that moving everything about is a good idea. I like most places the way they are. I know the entire f2p part of the world square by square off by heart because i have spent most of my rs time there (b4 i became p2p). And i know the main places in the members world, and messing with where places are can make existing players confused as they have to learn the whole map again.

The thrill that could come back is a pro but for me its more about how can it still be the best option if this one is made 9 years ago? There are lots of things changed and the map just didnt, just burn those houses down and rebuilt them in a better way. A building like the Grand Exchange would be built in the center of a village if it would be built.

Couldn't you achieve that through exploring new areas though? Yes, it was fun getting lost on my way from Lumbridge to Varrock, but such a large update would require so much time and effort for such a minor cause. It wouldn't be worth Jagex's time. Anyways, it would only take a few days for us to find out where everything is again - if that.

Many of us are accustomed to where everything is right now. If things changed, guides would have to change and we'd have to come up with different traveling/training methods. Some tweaks here and there could be a good thing - but changing the whole map is just too unrealistic because it would dissatisfy us more than it would help us.

I always hoped they made an update that made the map a lot larger. Not making cities bigger, just the routes between them. It takes 5 minutes tops going from town A to town B if they have a direct path. What would be nice is if they made a city far in one direction, with no fairy ring or teleportation method near it, and was basically another Varrock or Ardougne. A large city with many things to do, except to walk there it took a good 45 minutes, with many monsters and obstacles along the way. In other words, pretty much the adventurers city, only for the dedicated. Included of course would be many perks and bonuses that would make you want to say, so you don't waste your time.

Quality posting at its finest.

I would rather them spend their time on an amazingly larger new 'continent', where I wouldn't know where everything is, achieving the same effect

No it wouldnt be the same, recreating RuneScape will make guides useless and you have to figure out whats a good way to train, a new continent will only make you compare the training methods on that continent to existing training methods. Things as the wilderness are as big as when you could fight there, even now nobody goes there to fight (the area around minigames), just change it.

I'd like a new main city (like ardy, varrock, fally), based mainland not in some obscure place (woodlands, relekka, karamaja), but not a rework of the whole thing.

The only thing I dislike about the current world map are all the random islands.

Lunar Isle, Fremmennik Isles, Miscellania, Waterbirth Island, Pirates' Cove, the iceberg, Dragontooth, Mos Le'Harmless, Harmony, Karamja, Crandor, Entrana, Ape Atoll, Crash Island, Void Knights' Outpost, and Tutorial Island.

Heck, there are more islands than major cities.

I'd like to see some of these incorporated into smaller continents, perhaps with quest-requiring barriers, as the sheer amount of islands is a little unbelievable, especially with such different cultures so nearby (the northwest). Jagex could toss in some minor unreachable islands between them to look more like Oceania (look at a globe). Look at the minor islands near the Lighthouse, west of Relekka, around Tutorial Island, east of Karamja, and north of Morytania. Also, a huge weakness of the world map is that you can count squares - Tree Gnome Village, the Fight Arena, and Port Khazard can all fit into the same size square. Waterbirth, Pirates' Cove, Dragontooth, even Shilo Village are all the size of this square. I'd say north Karamja avoids these squares very nicely; however, south Karamja is one giant rectangle, more or less.

(You can effectively count these squares to get an idea of where your coordinate clue leads you, if you don't consult a guide.)

Jagex could easily use the area north of Morytania for an entire continent with 2 major cities (Falador) and several smaller ones (Draynor). It wouldn't have to require a quest, and you couldn't get to it without a teleport or boat ride. It might be just as crowded as Keldagrim unless they put something extremely useful there, such as a bank right next to something that a bank is not already right next to (a mine, a POH, teak/mahogany, obelisk).

In summary, less squares, more Europe and Canadian islands.

Well yes, I suppose you could visit new areas. But new areas aren't introduced that often, but a redo of the map, or some of it even, would be a different kind of thrill because rather than visiting entirely new areas, you're sort of seeing the Runescape world anew, by seeing areas you were once familiar with, in an entirely different perspective.

But I do agree with you that an update such of this which would require so much work, isn't very feasible as the pros outweigh the cons. Especially since the only real pro would possibly be making things fit better into the map(which they already do pretty well for the most part).
