Lateralus
I don't think the phone is a very good example. It's fair enough to say that it might be spoiling a child to give him a really expensive phone, but I don't think there's anything interesting about it. My dad wouldn't have got a mobile phone until he was around 35, does this say anything interesting about him? Of course not, it just says that the technology wasn't as readily available. The Paris Hilton argument is a little unfair as well. She is more or less a waste of space and time, but the problem isn't that she's there, it's that people like her. There's as many positive role models as there ever was, but the public eye rests squarely on idiots because that's what people seem to want to see. La lune ne garde aucune rancune. Nadril
Yeah I don't see a problem with a kid having a phone. Surely it helps rest the parents mind for when the kid is at a friends house (in case of an accident) or anywhere else. Some of you would be surprised how much just having a cellphone handy could help. Now when parents start giving their kids an iPhone at 10 (or 13 even) then I'll be concerned. However some cellphones are so cheap there is no reason not to have one.
dsavi
Seriously, back in the day I never saw kids at the age of 9 with cellphones. Now, it's not a rare sight to see. Lol, come to Finland- Because Nokia is based here, that has been happening since the late '90s. I got my first cell phone when I was 9, my little brother when he was 8. I myself believe it is when the person is allowed to out by themselves/with friends but not at a friends house incase they have an emergency, eg. someone is in need of medical treatment. My 1st phone was flashy, but since it was a work one before I got it, it has become scratched, but was actually cheaper for my parents because they didn't need/use it anyway, it is a Nokia N70, which I find I don't use half it's stuff anyways :( all I need is for it to be able to make calls, send/recieve texts, have bluetooth and a camera, it has that and more, I actually feel too spoilt  except for I didn't get mine till I was 16 (but I won't complain) Steam | PM me for BBM PIN Nine naked men is a technological achievement. anonymous1234
My first and only phone I got about a month ago, and it was only because we were getting some family plan and the phone came with it. Its pretty basic, I can text message but I think it costs a lot, and I barely ever bring it with me. However some cellphones are so cheap there is no reason not to have one. Quite. I got my phone fairly recently at thirteen, but I hardly use it. Besides, it was a dollar :P It's just that kids want to be like all the people they see on the television, and a good majority of them are scandalous, attention-grabbing drug addicts. That's why my role models are all dead criminals. Nom
My older cousin gave her son a phone at four years old. It was just one of those little programmable Firefly phones, but I was still like. . . Wtf. If your kid ever finds himself in a situation where he needs a cell phone to contact you at four years old, you need to consider parenting lessons. Me, my first phone wasn't granted me until halfway through freshman year in high school, and even then I had to bother my parents to no end. I was getting tired of having to borrow other people's cells. But that was really necessity. I don't see why you need a phone of your own when you're still young enough to only be going to friend's houses or ferried around with a chaperone. Land lines do still exist. adam_ross0
I got my phone when I was 14. 15 now. My sister (12 at the time) was begging for one. So when they went to get her a phone, they decided to get me one too. I never really use it for anything but making the occasional call and every now and then I'll use it if I'm over at a friend's house. Usually I just leave it off though. I'd say as long as you have a reason to have one and you use it, you should have one. I really don't think anybody under 10 should have one though. The youngest person I've ever saw with one was a second Grader. That's a 7 year old I think. Or a 6 year old. She had a Pink Razr, and she was texting one of her 'friends'. I know because someone else was asking her if it was her phone >.>
Lenin64
Because the topic has moved to underage cell phone use (now that would be an interesting case in a court), I didn't get my first phone until the end of 8th grade, and that was only because I was going on a class trip across the country and my parents wanted me to call home to make sure the tour guides didn't chop us into bloody pieces and use them as fishing bait. I didn't even want the thing, really, and it was just a cheap pay-as-you-go phone (still not really sure what that means). I only recently (at age 15) got a "real" cell phone, still cheap (free on my parents' plan, actually). Ad now my 10 year-old sister is going to get one of her own. a b c
Kids= Copy what they see. If they see a girl or a boy like their age dessing like an 18 year old, they will. If they see a another kid with cellphone they will just insist to their parent to get them. If they hear another kid saying that something is cool, they will do it! Why? Just to be cool... How dumb they are.
aquariusman
Earth has the same revolution time as you did when you were 9, their parents dont buy phones for kids to just have, to just call over saying "Hey, is it ok if i go the Jimmy's house?" when school is over. when did Miley Cyrus screw up? it seems the only one that is a perfect role model that no one pays attention to, is Miranda Cosgrove. To get you on a technicality, the spin of the Earth is actually slowing. To point out another technicality, kids are actually maturing earlier, or at least girls/women are. It is suspected/due to female birth control hormones being present in increasing levels in water supplies. This makes girls mature earlier, and men mature later. Also, I'd say the reason kids/teens (I fall under the teens category) are "growing up" faster is because we often idolize our elders, so we imitate them. This means that we want to have sex, we want to do drugs, we want to be as skinnier than we can be, we want to be able to do what we want, have what we want, whenever we want. Most of these are present because our greatest source of information is the media, who show all of these things. Basically, it's all because kids are inevitably being exposed to things that are meant for more mature audiences, and sometimes it can't be helped, no matter how protective a parent is. And a kid having a cellphone isn't growing up too fast, it's just the kid wanting a cell phone and getting it. I personally don't get what the deal is with having a cell phone, I make do without one (Admittedly, that is only because my other friends have cellphones). There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. Thatregret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new, better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret. It's experience. dusqi
I think there's an interesting dichotomy between kids growing up faster in some social areas (drink, drugs, looking older), but not other 'mature' areas (being responsible, contributing to society). I am fine with kids growing up quicker, as long as they take on the responsibilities of being older also. I think that the problem is that kids are basically useless to society until they're at least 18 years old. In the past, kids used to do useful things at a younger age, and that gave them a sense of self-worth, a sense that they had a place in the world, and some self-respect. People that have self-respect don't act like celebrities. For it is the greyness of dusk that reigns. The time when the living and the dead exist as one. Tim
i gotta agree on this. i have a younger sister who HAS to have something better the me when i get it, even if i pay for it with my money. (not to mention the little cow steals from me.) atm "Hip-Tops" are so in demand at my school everyone "cool" has to have one and pay 600$ for a peice of junk. its pathetic what some people will do to fit in, weather it be drugs, alcohol or even consumer items such as phones etc. though i will say off topically, sharing a computer with a 15yo sister is NOT cool under any circumstances. its also even worse when ( i know there may be some in the same situation) you have a younger sibiling have sex before you and litterally brag about it to make you seem like your immature. whoop-de-freak'n-do basil. you did it with a guy/girl in a bush/car/party. Congratulations, Your Dignity Level is now: 1. anyway point is kids now are growing up waay faster with sex, drugs and consumeratives becoming bigger. but what i notice and shame are people do/have these things and instantly think: "i drink, im mature." isnt being mature, "im 17 and i dont like to drink" is being mature. im called a child because i dont go around having sex, drinking and am a mother's boy. yeah. thats the end of my .... jibberish. She's borderline right now, and once a topless pic comes out (and you know there will be in 3 years when its not child pornography) and she will go right down the path of Britney Spears. Lets face it, the minute these new pics were taken she doomed herself. Get back here so I can rub your butt.
