"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice

Featured Replies

It's sort of normal to be needy when you're in a healthy, loving relationship with someone. It's okay in that case, but not if you've been together for two weeks.

Matt: You want that eh? You want everything good for you. You want everything that's--falls off garbage can

Camera guy: Whoa, haha, are you okay dude?

Matt: You want anything funny that happens, don't you?

Camera guy: still laughing

---

I don't think you're in love, then. You might love her (and her company), not in love. I see a massive difference.

But I think the list thing is [bleep]ing adorable. Make it heartfelt and beautiful. I heard a story once, where a man began (on Thanksgiving) to write down one thing a day that he was thankful for, concerning his wife. He gave it to her the next Thanksgiving, having written down something every day (it was her birthday too, I think). She cried. It also just about saved their relationship, as it had other positive effects upon how he treated her - going from being complacent in regards to her love to an active passion.

Stuff like that is most of my reasoning for being an over-the-top romantic. You just make folks' day.

I'd like to discuss something. Something I've noticed a lot of lately, that has bothered me. It's relevant. It plagues both guys and gals, but I feel it is moreso the lad's responsibility: complacency. Dull, boring, unchanging complacency. I had a conversation with a very important girl in my life today. I've been noticing that she's been having troubles with her boyfriend a lot lately. She isn't one to talk about her problems much, preferring to weather them bravely but cry alone. It tears my whole heart out when this kind of thing happens. Her boyfriend really just takes her for granted. He gets mad when she flirts with other boys, but she only does because they pay attention to her. Compliments, politeness, opening doors - it's the little things that really do matter. They relationship is in serious trouble, but she won't talk to him about it. She agrees with me that it could ruin their (over a year) relationship, but doesn't want to bring it up for fear of it becoming a fight. I've tried to talk to the lad, but it's hard to contact someone you barely know when they live thousands of miles away, harder still to make them listen.

How many relationships can you think of that went this way?

Just pay attention, guys. Cherish her. Don't be needy about it (neediness is requiring her attention to thrive), but tell her how she makes you a better man. Love the lass, or somebody who does will win her affections. And complimenting her just when you want sexual favors is not worth a pat on the back so much as a knuckle sandwich. But I like to handle my problems with pen and paper. Or, more accurately, keyboard.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

---

That's just cliche. Try the thing the guy in the story did. Every time you think something nice about her, write it down. Give it all to her at the end.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

I've seen a lot of relationships go downhill because of all the little things. Things like holding the door open, the occasional compliment and a hug/kiss goodbye can go a long way. I think it makes you feel more comfortable around the person, and takes away any chance of your partner thinking "Is he/she mad at me" or having doubt that they matter to the other person.

For my list (Of 100 things I love about ______), what sort of things should I put? Would something like "The feeling I get when I look into her eyes" be too...strong? (That's not one I'd necessarily use, I just don't know what to put down.)

Yeah, avoid cliche'd answers. "I love your eyes" isn't going to cut it. "I love the way your eyes light up whenever you see me from accross the room" I a little more personal. Make each thing connected to her idiosyncrasies. Make them her own. "I love the way you listen to me ramble on and on about music, even though I know you hate the music i listen to" is an example from mine. Acknowledges appreciate. That sorta stuff.

Exactly. I don't think you've known her for long enough to make a list that long. It's worth trying though, maybe with less items.

"Looking in her eyes..." I would slap you. Too cliche, it'll make me cringe.

RPG got it right. Make it personal not cliche and realisitcally makes no sense.

What I have so far:

[Hide]

Always

And always

I'm always and forever yours

You don't know what you do to me

And I can't find words to say what I mean

But without I would be insane

But still I know I'm crazy

And for only you

I'll try but then I'll stutter, and

Then I'll try and try again

But still

No words for you

You're just so beautiful

And you leave me in disbelief

I really can't come to grips

With the reality

That I'm always

Always

But I'm always

And forever yours

When I see you, my heart skips a beat

When we touch, I'm lifted off my feat

You don't know what you mean to me

But still it's just reality

I'll think of words that come to mind

Then I'll look you in the eye

And then

They just don't sound right

Not again...

You're just so beautiful

And you leave me in disbelief

I really can't come to grips

With the reality

That I'm always

Always

But I'm always

And forever yours

Always

Always

Always

Forever, yours

You're just so beautiful

Forever

And forever yours

I'll probably revise it a few times, or pump a few songs out and pick the best one. I have a feeling I can do better.

It's a nice poem, but did you mean to type line 6 as "But without I would be insane?" "But without you I would be insane" would make more sense in my opinion, and not make it sound like you'll go insane if you can't find words to describe your feelings.

Oh, and don't give ehr this unless you really mean it. Being romantic is awesome, but elading a girl on isn't. I'm not implying anything, but I just figured I'd better through that out there.

The only difference between Hitler and the man next door who comes home and beats his kids every day is circumstance. The intent is the same-- to harm others.

I wouldn't use always and forever after 4 months, but hey I couldn't even write a poem like that, good job.

Frankly, I'm still unconvinced. What you wrote will probably do, but I think you could do better, and then she'd actually go nuts. I'm no songwriter, but I think you should use more metaphors in your lyrics.

As you plow some other field and try and forget my name,

See what harvest yields, and, supposing I'd do the same

I planted rows of peas, but by the first week of July

They should have come up to my knees but they were maybe ankle high

[hide=Messes of Men - mewithoutYou]"I do not exist," we faithfully insist,

Sailing in our separate ships and from each tiny caravel.

Tiring of trying, there's a necessary dying,

Like the horseshoe crab in its proper season sheds its shell.

Such distance from our friends,

Like a scratch across the lens,

Made everything look wrong from anywhere we stood.

And our paper blew away before we'd left the bay.

So half-blind, we wrote these songs on sheets of salty wood.

Caught me making eyes at the other boatman's wives,

And heard me laughing louder at the jokes told by their daughters.

I'd set my course for land, but you well understand,

It takes a steady hand to navigate adulterous waters.

The propeller's spinning blades held acquaintance with the waves,

As there's mistakes I've made no rowing could outrun.

The cloth low on the mast, I say I got no past,

I'm nonetheless the librarian and secretary's son.

The tarnish on my brass, the mildew on my glass-

I'd never want someone so crass as to want someone like me.

But a few leagues off the shore, I bit a flashing lure,

And I assure you, it was not what I expected it to be!

I still tastes its kiss, that dull hook in my lip

Is a memory as useless as a rod without a reel.

To an anchor ever dropped, sea-sick yet still docked,

Captain spotted napping with his first mate at the wheel.

Floating forgetfully along, with no need to be strong,

We keep our confessions long, but when we pray we keep it short.

I drank a thimble full of fire,

I'm not ever coming back...

Oh, my God.

"I do not exist," we faithfully insist,

While watching sink the heavy ship with everything we knew.

And if ever you come near, I'll hold up high a mirror.

Lord, I could never show you anything as beautiful as you![/hide]

These lyrics have been stuck in my head for over a month; as you can see, they're not from a love song (the first are about leaving God and finding yourself helpless, the second are about sin and repentance, and they each have a theme: agriculture and sea), so I think this applies to any lyrics you write. Think it through, try to find your own way to say whatever ideas you have. This will help you avoid the cliché trap that you've pretty much fallen in.

An interesting article I happened across while looking into weight training stuff, basically all about having the confidence to do what you want to do. One point is brought up that I've seen come up here a few times: "Fake it to make it". Pretending to be what you want to be, you'll eventually become it.

Also, as far as an update of what I asked about dating a 15 year old when I'm 17, I've decided against it, or at least nothing has happened. If anything I'm now going after a girl in my biology class and circle of friends, and things are going well with that. Oh, and I've decided to focus on not being so absent-minded, which has lead to a very annoying running joke with my friends.

There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,

and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. That

regret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new,

better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret.

It's experience.

It's not so much faking it as setting yourself into the mindset. Our minds are mighty powerful - they can shape our very world.

I prefer older girls. Older girls prefer me. Works out nicely.

Sort of on topic to the love poem thing, my girlfriend wrote me a few raps while I was at work, posting a couple.

Better than what most rappers put out. And I could've sworn you posted this elsewhere, although where is making me draw a blank.

And in other news, those theater girls are hilariously awesome. It's not a bad minor degree to take, to say the least.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

OPEN WIDE HERE COMES THE HELICOPTER.

It could have been anywhere, there are no limits to where I might have posted it. If I even did.

Big Problem here.

I like this girl. This girl just happens to be going out with my best friend. However, she doesn't really like the relationship and texted me that she is thinking about dumping him. Sadly, my second best friend also likes her. I want to go out with her, but I don't want to stab anyone in the back.

Help please? I can talk to her and stuff fine, and if she wasn't dating anyone I would be going out with her right now.

I hooked up with this girl (who hasn't dated any of my friends in 8 months now, if you were wondering) last night  it was awesome. Only took me a year and nine months to accomplish, lol. Worth the wait.

Well done, slow and steady wins the race.

Though watch the trolls marching in.

Actually, I was about to congratulate him, and any of the regulars ITT probably will. I don't think you picked up on the 8 month difference. Also, learn what trolling is.
