Portfolio.com just published a short excerpt of its interview with EA boss John Riccitiello who tells the site that it's "got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development" including "the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare." One doesn't need to connect too many dots to arrive at the conclusion that BioWare is returning to the Star Wars universe with a Knights of the Old Republic MMO.

[Update: We've just spoken with N. Evan Van Zelfden, the writer of the report, who told us that when asked specifically if this game was "KOTOR Online", Riccitiello responded unequivocally, "Yes." So, there you have it sounds like we can take off our skeptical glasses.]

Me on Masively.com:

Bioware has an incredible chance here to make something amazing. Especially in regards to the KoTOR universe there were (IIRC) a ton of jedis during that time. It really makes the most sense when making a star wars MMO.

I'm thinking about PvP too, could be pretty damn awesome. Instead of just choosing the dark side or light side it would be based off of who you fight. If you start letting your power get to your head, and start killing off people your character will become increasingly evil. Think of the KoTOR system just a bit more advanced hopefully.

I do hope they incorporate PvP though, because the universe is one of the best to have it. Bounty Hunters, jedis running around, ton of conflict...

Bioware has a lot on their hands though, but I'm positive they can pull it off.

Anyways, your thoughts? Bioware has such an epic chance here to make an incredible MMO. As I said in the massively comment there is so much going on in the KoTOR universe, and a lot of it wouldn't be bound to a lot of the [cabbage] that is happening in a normal star wars timeframe (like during the movies).

Of course they have an incredible chance with PvP too as I stated. Man, the nerd in me shudders to think of massive battles between the light side and dark side. :geek:

The rest of E3 can go screw its self, this is the best announcement here.

If I still played MMOs this would be fantastic news. Since I don't however I would prefer KOTOR III rather than this.

I think the hypes way too high to begin with and i could never play the KOTOR games and i didnt like what i played of mass effect.

I also think the lore will eb kick [wagon] but combat(after mass effects and KOTOR') wont be too great, i think it could be differant but bioware hasnt been doing well with fast paced and versatile combat systems.

Oh and theres star wars galaxy's.I hope they read the developer post mortem over why the MMO bombed because it's very enlightening. Its teh biggest license you can get star wars and on paper it should sell millions but how restrictive that license is has hurt anyone but bioware in the past.If anyone can do it its bioware. Its the last hope  off a star wars MMO being succesfull and if they cant do it no-one can, and i dont think they can do it :-#

Nerdgasm! I trust Bioware will do something awesome, but I really hope the combat system is different than in the NWN and KoTOR games, i.e. you stack up a bunch of attacks and then just sit back and watch your character flip around like a monkey. It really kills the immersiveness for me.

I'm sure it will be. They've done other games before (jade empire) that had a different and successful combat system.

I'm thinking Bioware is going to be able to pull off a good combat system, and not make it similar to the other KoTOR games. Just because it's an MMO.

Anyways it'll be good to follow this game, and see how it turns out. The immersion and storylines will probably be very deep as it is based off of something already very huge.

Won't speculate too much though as it was only confirmed.

When I first heard about the announcement for a new KOTOR I was pretty excited and shocked that it was actually announced. I'm not to happy about it becoming an MMO, like indy500fan I would rather see a KOTOR 3.

kotor....mmo....It's about got dang time. I wonder if they'll try to do a cross platform format instead of just having individual servers. That is if it's on more than one system when all is said and done.I would have rather had a kotor 3, but ths will work just fine.

If you choose your beliefs/lifestyle simply based on what your parents want, then you are a weak minded individual and are not even worthy of calling yourself a person.

That's awesome. Yeah, I highly doubt (read: hope) that the combat system will not be roll-based like in the RPG. I'm hoping it is more along the lines of Jedi Outcast/Academy with MMO flavor.

This sounds sweet! I've played Kotor at my cousin a couple of times, was really cool.

And now as an mmo? WOOHOO!

But... How will i have time for everything?

Hope it's not like Star Wars Galaxies, everyone there were Jedi and it was epic fail.

It wasn't originally like that, it used to take a massive amount of time to become a jedi. Then they updated the system which made it easier to become jedi.

But like in every MMO time diminshes achievement, unless theres a cap on how many jedi's can be on a server(which is idiotic), then theres going to be a lot of jedi's.I think a lot of the potential playerbase will only wnat to play it to become a jedi so if bioware wants a diverse range of people theyve kinda shot themselves in foot.

I might check it out, but I would really prefer kotor3. I'm hoping it has an offline campaign as well as online play, though chances are it won't be.

The good thing is that during the time the game is set there were a lot of jedi's around, so at least it won't be as ridiculous as SWG NGE.

I'm thinking that the jedi's won't be the all powerful classes, or at least (obviously) that there will be other classes that will be plenty useful. I could imagine playing a bounty hunter, for example.

Could shape up to be a brilliant MMO, i just hope its not going to be full of pre teens trying to be Luke Skywalker.

I would agree with you nadril but after hearing all the outrage from people who played mass effect about how unbalanced some of the classes are, it really doenst fill me with hope. The big thing was it was near impossible to beat the final boss with anything but a typical soldier class like the vanguard or soldier.Engineers and sentinals apparently had real diffuculty with teh final boss taking 70+ tries for some people and not because the boss was too hard, they toned it down before release but because those particular classes didnt work in that section.

Until i see it in the flesh running i have serious reservations. Its going to have to be superb on release to pull people away from current MMO's.

See I don't understand that because I've played through ME around 4 times with the Soldier, Biotic, Sentinel and Engineer class and never took more that 2-3 tries on the end boss regardless of which class I chose.

If anyone can pull off a successful Star Wars MMO it's BioWare.

If there is going to be dark side, I'm all the way for that

I hope the combat system is better than 1 click wait, heal, attack, heal, etc.
