Probably just as well she didn't know my prefered method was to hold them in my palm while doing it.

I've always done it that way, but our bread knife didn't need any coaxing to cut you. I never did cut myself, though I'm not sure how. I have been working with knives for 5 years, using them at home for nearly 20 years and have NEVER cut myself with one. But give me a cardboard box and I cut myself every time.

I also do the steak knife method of separating frozen burgers, but it's rare I eat burgers anymore.

Yesterday I found out l am not working again for this coming week, but my employer won't officially lay me off yet. For those who care, it has now been 6 weeks since I worked, and I have had only 6 shifts since the start of October. I don't care that I'm not working (it happens every year around this time) but at least tell me if I'm going to get any more work (which they usually do) so I can make plans.

Ugh, I'm so nervous meeting new people/being in new situations. Anybody know of a way to deal with this that isn't getting high/drunk? I feel like that's the only way to gain courage to deal with things outside of my comfort zone.

It's a hard thing to get over. I've been battling with it my entire life. It's that control freak part of me going "ohmygodwhatdoidowheredoigoisthistherightfork...". I've slowly been getting better at it as I get older. The trick seems to be remembering that most other people are just as nervous as you are, so don't worry. Relax and try to enjoy yourself.

Just remember that you are Star, and you are awesome. :)

Confidence building is really the only way I can see to go at it, and really that means that at some point your going to have to just put yourself in situations your not comfortable in, and keep doing it until you get the hang of it.

For me, I had a lot of practice at summer camps, since I would have to make new friends for every camp. Sort of a sink or swim situation, though I have never had any anxiety talking to people, it's more of an enjoyment issue. At this point in my life, I actually really enjoy meeting new people. I've gotten fairly good at it, and it's a neat exercise.

One of the things I learned on my way to not dreading things like parties is that I like to overestimate how terrible things will be. Knowing this, truly knowing it from my own experience I am now a lot more willing to put myself in uncomfortable situations because I have built up my confidence over time, and deep down I know things aren't going to be as bad as I think (the setting the bar low method).

Of course, I have no idea how well this translates to other people.

I used to be very shy during my late teens. In fact, if you go back over my posts from about five or six years ago, you'd find my tone even on here was passive-aggressive, I didn't have the confidence to be assertive. When I was on the Crew, I wouldn't reply to PMs sent to me by normal forum members, or add people in-game because they wanted to share some information. I barely added other Crew members on MSN/Skype, it was really debilitating and it did affect my lifestyle quite drastically.

The turning point for me was when I started working and, quite frankly, I had to talk to people and introduce myself, because if I didn't, I'd get sacked and I'd have no money. Like Randox says, 'sink or swim', and actually I realised they were just as nervous about meeting me as I was about them, and they actually took an interest in my background and my interests. I was very nervous at first, but I just kept smiling and the positive feedback eventually improved my confidence so that now, I'm not overwhelmed in those situations any more. I still get nervous, but I know how to use that nervous energy to good effect.

Another thing I observed recently, when I started university and I noticed (usually, younger) people who were very reticent about introducing themselves to the rest of us in class, is that everyone gets intimidated by talking out loud. Even when people are quite friendly and talking to each other, how many of them play with their hair, or fiddle around with their pen, or shuffle their papers, or play with their phones, or avoid eye contact? In other words, how many people do the things we all do because we're feeling self-conscious?

So, you can learn two things:

  1. It's not helpful to feel as though other people have so much more confidence in speaking than you have, and;
  2. It's probably not an accurate assessment of the situation either.

This morning some idiot in a BMW tried to pull out through traffic and in front of my truck. Everyone's ok, but the front of my nice new truck (I've had it less than 6 months) is smashed in, the tire is flat and there's a leak in the radiator. Now I'm waiting at the body shop for someone to pick me up and I'll be without a vehicle for work for God knows how long. At least the officer declared it his fault. She even wrote him a ticket for it.

To top it all off, today's the day my ex girlfriend is coming over to pick up her dog and what's left of her stuff.

So how's your Monday going?

better than yours haha. Got out of work early, trying to have some beers with my friend later. At least insurance will cover your car, and you won't be penalized as bad since it was the other driver's 'fault'.

Exactly. Like my boss says, it's steel and plastic and why we have insurance.

You know that feeling when you have an important assignment and you just can't convince yourself to start working on it because you're intimidated by it? That's the feeling I have right now.

I have a similar feeling about packing my stuff up to move... again. It'll end up being the usual rush-job like all of my school projects were.

Here's what my poor truck looks like. :(

(had to wait until I got home to upload it)

Hard to believe the side of a BMW 325 did that.

Crazy how cars are so maluable.

Writing my essay right now, hopefully I get done soon so I don't have to worry about it in the morning and spend the rest of the night laid back.

Been pretty swamped with school lately. Despite 5 out of my 6 classes being AP courses, I'm luckily maintaining a 4.0 for the year so far. Been doing college applications too. And still working part-time while trying to go to concerts and maintain a social life. Bleh. Can't wait for my four-day weekend, even though it's going to involve more work.

Sides of a car are supposed to be quite tough, otherwise no one on the impact side would ever survive their car being t-boned. No real structure between the outside skin of your truck and the forward crumple zone though (that would be the frame the engine is sitting in).

All things considered, cars can take some pretty big hits without much damage when you consider how heavy they are, and how much force it takes to stop one quickly. sucks about your truck though, and even though its nice to clearly not be your fault, your still left wondering exactly what the other person was thinking and why you have to be in that situation.

As another point of interest, if you are in a situation where you feel 'too safe', you'll be inclined to take risks to get back to normal levels. My point being, that volvo or bmw is more likely to do something stupid than that camry, because the former have better chances of walking away from an accident. Motorcycles on the other hand are driven by crazy people.

Hm, is writing a 5 page essay in two hours slow?

Today I realize that my hard rives are backwards form the way they should be for best performance. As it is, I keep all my media files, which are the bulk of the data I keep, on my second hard drive, because that's why I got it (it used to be the external drive for my laptop, not it lives in my PC). Because of the space used, I keep all my games on my primary hard drive, and I shouldn't do that. Looking at some troubleshooting for D3, it occurs to me that there is potential for games to suffer if they need to draw data quickly from the hard drive, and it is already in use by another program. By having the games on the second drive, which is only in use when I watch movies and listen to music, there would never be any conflict.

EDIT: I am actually just going to link the files that are the problem to the other HDD. Most of the time the game works fine, which means that the hard drive is fast enough, except when windows needs it for a few seconds. The second HDD is always idle, so I can just run off there. If not, I'll make a RAM disk and move the biggest offender there, since RAM has an excellent RRT.

It didn't solve my problem. Figured. I don't think it will be fixed until I finally get that wireless extender, because our new router kind sucks in the signal strength department (last one was a beast). Still, it's good to know how to do that.

I realized today that the Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate comes out in 8 days. Very excited for this game, have a lot of fond memories from the original set, looking forward to seeing their updated versions.

Just overheard two of my flatmates talking in the kitchen (our communal areas were inspected today, they left a form for us to keep as a record):

A: Did we pass the inspection then?

B: Well it doesn't say we passed but it's really clean ain't it?

A: Yeah it is, I've not got an email.

Firstly, it's "clean" because myself and the remaining two members of the flat blitzed the place last Sunday, since we don't really want to face a £102 cleaning fine, even if we haven't caused the mess because we tidy up after ourselves. Those two haven't lifted a finger since they got here. Secondly, it's not actually "clean" because there's dishes piling in the kitchen sink going smelly and moldy; there's some plates that were there when I moved in almost two months and still haven't been touched! No prizes for guessing which two flatmates those plates belong to; the rest of us are refusing to wash them. But apparently, it's "clean" and they've passed the inspection when it's more like we passed it for them. Thirdly, if we had failed the inspection, they wouldn't email us, they'd just clean it and send us the bill later.

I'm sat in the bedroom overhearing this, doing my assignment. I just let out a deep, condescending sigh. Really wonder what world some people live in.

It's been a while since I posted here. Not right if I dare say. I have many good friends on this forum and to be honest I feel bad for not posting as much.

For me, I am on break this week and have been playing euphonium and working on music history homework. Besides that I have enjoyed my break by doing nothing except be lazy. We are also having thanksgiving today so I am pretty freaking excited for this!

Cheers!

Another day of not knowing what's going on with my truck. I'm riding around with one of the other guys, so I'm only doing half the work and none of the driving or paperwork. So it's not all bad.
