No one should go into debt to buy a car...money down the drain

So are repairs on a decade old car.

My skin is finally getting soft
I'll scrub until the damn thing comes off

Depends on the repair. I spent 1k replacing the clutch on my 11 year old car 4 years ago...60000km later it's still going strong.

Buying someone else's problem is often more expensive than buying a new car. My current car is a 2013 civic that I bought in 2015 for 16k. It was a floor model the dealership was using for test drives so it only had 1800 miles on it, basically brand new. Probably the best purchase I ever made

Sure..you have to be prudent when buying used. But every time you buy a new car you lose 20% of the value when you drive it off the lot

Most reliable way to buy cars, if you want new(ish) is 2 year old cars from dealers. They've taken the largest hit from depreciation but should still come with a decent warranty. Brand new cars are terrible from a financial aspect due to massive depreciation.

Personally, I'm comfortable buying anything within ~15 years if its in good shape. Even repairs aren't a big deal if they're still costing less per month than what you would be spending on payments for a new car.

Had an interview for an academic role at a top uni in the UK. I think it went okay - we will see though. Would be a massive step up from going from the bottom 50 to beyond top 5. Probably won't be able to browse reddit as much :D!

Our family's only car is a Volvo from 2000. Can't say we've spent too much on repairs. And got it for 2000 euros, used from Germany a few years ago. 2012, maybe?

Still running quite well.

Old cars that don't have too much electronic shit and have higher tolerances for issues last forever. Sadly, pretty much the endpoint for that sort of cars is around the change of millennium...

Something that's rarely pressed is that newer cars are a lot safer than older cars.

I went $3,000 in debt because I literally could not find something reliable (e.g., Toyota or Honda) under 200K miles made in the last 10 years for $4,000.

Assuming all goes well it'll be paid off around April of next, however.

I can't say safety has ever been a selling point for me aside from ensuring the car was roadworthy with parts in good condition.

Newer cars are safer, sure...but only marginally safer than ten year olds cars. But driving a pickup truck is also safer than driving a Honda civic...at some point, the extra safety isn't worth the cost

Had to take my laptop in for repairs. Got it back today. Thing is running like a dream again. Fan was disgustingly dirty. Wasn't cleaned in like 6 years. Also finally sorted out my medical and TSA clearance. I can finally start flying. Yay.

Good call, Jamal.

Last summer my computer started shutting off intermittently and I figured it needed a new PSU. On my way to the electronics store, I got in a car accident and woke up in the hospital. Everything turned out fine but when I got back home eventually and installed the new PSU, it still shut off intermittently. Turns out it was overheating because a giant dust bunny was lodged in the fan. I cleaned it out and everything worked fine again.

Moral of the story: clean out your tower or you'll end up in the hospital

I cleaned out the front fans of my PC just before i left for the first time since building it. It was like 6 months or so at the time? I was actually surprised at how much dust it had collected compared to the rest of the PC. The radiator was surprisingly clean as a whistle though. And the fans in the back don't really build up much dust either. It's just the three in the front that collect a ton of dust. Maybe it's because they're covered from the front with a panel, or something. At least cleaning that PC is a lot easier than the laptop, so it's much less of a hassle.

Thats the balance I'm trying to have, a car new enough to stay nice and reliable for a long time but old enough to where the rate at which it depreciates is slow.

But my 02 civic only has 120k miles on it so I'll probably end up keeping it for at least another year

That doesn't seem like a lot....around here I'd expect to be able to get close to 200k miles on a civic...and we have salt in the winter

It also depends what you do in those 120k miles. City miles are so much worse on your car. 120k pure high way would probably only warrant oil and tire changes

so here's the finished product

I kind of went overboard for this assignment. The suggestions were things like Snake... using Phaser (a small JavaScript game framework) or something.

Wave 18 is really hard (when all the bosses respawn). Strategy? Pay attention to the dragon and teleport to the opposite side of the screen when he attacks. Make sure you have a large army of wights summoned.

Just checked and our family car has done at least 387k km's. And it's our only car. And we freaking love it, cause it's from a time when cars were fuel efficient and reliable. 4,5 litres per 100km's efficient, has 105 kw and weighs nearly 2 tons. Yes, it is a big-ass diesel Volvo wagon.

We use it to move our whole family, dog and all of our stuff for the whole summer to Norway and back.

And I heard you guys were terrified of the 200k mile mark...
