Transgender Contestant to Compete on Top Model

Wednesday August 13, 2008

One of the 14 girls who will compete on the new season of America's Next Top Model which returns to The CW on September 3 is transgender.

"My cards were dealt differently," Isis, a 22-year-old former receptionist, tells Us Weekly exclusively in its new issue, on newsstands now.

Hailing from Prince George's County, Maryland, Isis identifies herself as "a woman born physically male."

Will she be a role model?

"I like to help people, but I'm here to follow my dreams," she tells Us.

The inclusion of Isis is being hailed by GLAAD president Neil Giuliano as "an unprecedented opportunity for a community that is underrepresented on television.

"We applaud Tyra Banks and The CW for making this historic visibility of transgender people possible," Giuliano said.

What are your views on cosmetic surgery, and I guess I should say more specifically, transgender surgery...?

On a personal level, I do not agree with cosmetic surgery except in the case of accident; ie, a man's face is mutilated in a fire and he needs certain cosmetic surgery measures to put his face "back in order".

However, even if I don't personally agree with others getting it, I still see no reason why we should restrict those who want to do it. It's always interesting to me to see people in general having no issues with people getting boob jobs, yet they are abhorred at people getting transgender surgery.

So all and all, while I do not support cosmetic surgery in general on a personal level, I don't see anything wrong with people getting it if they want it.

I hope it doesn't win. Shouldn't really be qualified to be in a women's modeling competition if you don't get a period in my opinion. (Isn't America's Top Model women-only?) It's fine for, you know, other things I guess. Just not those sorts of things.

EDIT: Note, I only meant the period thing as being an actual woman.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

She looks like a woman, and the job she wants to do is basically clothes rack. Why not let her? It does seem very exploitative of the show though. I can't see them caring about her 'struggle' (or whatever you want to call it) at all, it's just a shock tactic to attract viewers.

As long as people undergo thorough, thorough psychological evaluation before these sorts of procedures I don't have any problem.

This reminds me of Misfile, although this "female" doesn't even have the organs to reproduce, but w/e <.< Isn't it kind of cheating though that he/she is modeling when his/her body is very heavily influenced by hormone pills and reconstructive surgery? :?

I'm against cosmetic surgery except, as someone above said, in the event of an accident where a person is mutilated. I don't see why people think they need to stuff plastic in their face or breasts to look prettier. As for transgenders, I also think there's no need for that. Be happy with the way you were made. Who are you to determine if you're made wrong?

tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :(
But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

Some people's brain structure is such that they are 'a woman trapped in a man's body' or vice versa. It's not the same as homosexuality I think. :|

Why not let her?

Because she's a man.

Modeling is a profession based entirely on aesthetics. If the clothes look good on her/him then that's all the designers need.

No, modeling is about (biological) shallow women that look good. Male modeling is morally wrong, women aren't even attracted to male models.

With my experience with transgender people, they ARE authentic with their gender identification. Gender (gender identification) relates to your status as boy or girl. Thus, SHE (yes, SHE) is qualified to run in this competition. She has been through transgender surgery, which means she is now anatomically congruent with her identity. Allow her.

Also to the above people, discrimination is wrong. It's not like she's sub-human FFS. She's a freakin human being. She might not fit into YOUR view of the norm. :o Ohmygosh! The world is coming to an end! If you don't want her to be in the competition, don't watch the show! I'm surprised many of you can't get it through your puny little brains.

They only want to live out their dreams. You know, having dreams isn't illegal yet.

And also, transgender girls (born anatomically male, but have female gender identification) aren't men running around in wigs, they aren't gay men using excuses to sleep with heterosexual men, and they aren't perverts asking for a reason to be allowed into women's locker rooms or bathrooms. Your ignorance is FAIL.

By the way, Jesus called and asked for his religion back.

I'm surprised there's been no "Dude looks like a lady" jokes yet.

But I think the reason people feel differently about different procedures- boob jobs vs. transgender is that large breasts occur naturally in nature. Not on everybody, but it's there. Nowhere in the human species do people change their gender naturally. And lets' not bring frogs/fish into this, since they're not human.

But as has been said, as long as the dude looks like a lady to a sufficient degree, why not? However, if by any chance he/she wins, I will physcially remove three of my own vertebrae, bend my spine backwards, and eat my own [wagon].

Exactly, they're not a "strange sub-species". It must suck having that kind of condition where you're blatantly confused about who you are... sometimes even "what" you are.

*looks at siggy. looks at previous posts... looks at siggy again*

Ok then. I personally don't really care much about transgendered people. As in, I don;t really think they should burn in hell, nor should I think we as a society should treat them with pity.

Those people went through a whole lot of trouble to get to the gender they want to be... is that any worse than staying their original gender and then going homosexual?

If society is going to discriminate against people changing their genders, then we might as well treat other people who go in for breast implants/reduction, skin grafts, etc exactly the same way you're going to treat gender changing. What about people like who go through so much plastic surgery that they dont even look human anymore? at least these gender changing people look a bit human.

And some cosmetic surgery is neccessary, at least for some people in society.

for example

the Treacher-Collins Syndrome http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/loca ... ryid=28372

or breast cancer [where patients have to remove their entire, or parts of their breast tissue; this also happens to men] http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=bre ... arch&meta=

At the very least, if you're going to say that people shouldn;t change anything about themselves, then no one should ever get a breast enlargement or want to remove bags or circles under their eyes....

Also, what about teratomas? ever heard of them? they're really cool cancer cells. it's when part of your body just starts growing extra eyes, teeth or hair. I guess these shouldn't be removed as well, because it is to an extent cosmetic surgery.

nevermind that if you google teratomas you'll find pictures of it on the male genitalia.

Anyways, I totally agree with the majority. Transgendered people should not be allowed to partake in stuff like beauty pagents because those things are mainly supposed to be made completely of women so that men can drool over them. and... um... also no one who used any type of cosmetic surgery should be let in those things.

real people! like Jennifer aniston before her nose job, or pamela anderson before her boob job, or angelina jolie before her lip job.. or [ugh.. cant think of anymore..]

but yea... most people aren't born pretty.. or perfect! Truth be told.. that's what makes us unique.

And well.. makes you wonder... is it really that bad to let people be themselves? especially since over the internet most people are probably most likely, really ugly [yes.. I do not look in the pic thread in off topic.]

LOL are you quite that stupid or just blind? Where do you think the designers put those suits and tuxes you wear? On a man of course.

Women don't like male models? I can't stop the laughter in my head. Put a nice, muscular man on stage and women would like it.

Really, its a modeling job for god's sake. The model can be man or woman as long as its what the designers' needs.

don't even try to reason with him. Trust me, don't even try.

OT: I really doubt it will win, and if it does, then I'd be surprised, at the very least.

'It'?? I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you didn't mean that in a derrogatory manner, but seriously, she's a she. If you're afraid of 'technicalities,' I'm showing you the technicalities. If they prefer to be labeled as 'she' or 'he,' then label them appropriately. You are only giving homophobes ammunition to fire against this minority that is often bashed and victims of hate crimes...

Is there a blanket exclusion for any entrant who has undergone cosmetic surgery? If this is the case, then I don't think she should be allowed to enter. Rules are rules.
