The RS Stereotype

Featured Replies

I for one certainly don't go about broadcasting that I play RS, and I know a lot of people do the same, but I have a question for you guys:

Why do you think playing RS automatically makes you a "nerd" a "loser or "sad"?

Imo it's just a game, most people play games and I don't see the problem with it.

What do you think?

I agree with the stereotypical views of online gamers, and I don't go shouting it out.

Not that I feel embarrassed but that I never felt the need to say anything.

But, this topic has recently been on the news, more and more people are playing online games, so the stereotype is fading, fast.

Its because the stereotype of a runescape player is an overweight, balding, un-hygienic 30-something who has no job and plays for 15+ hours a day.

Fixed.

Anyways. I think people need to get over the whole "No life lulz!" thing. Just because you dislike standing at the mall or taco bell killing time while talking about the boobs on that chick that just walked by doesn't make you a horrible person.

I HATE the elitist attitude people with "lifes" have.

Man, I really do love Runescape, and I'm sure if it was a real person I would of asked it to marry me by now.

Robert, was that an extremist insinuation?

I do hate the stereotype, for me, Runescape has ALWAYS been a game I can just escape to and relax when I want a break from doing a research paper on my laptop or working on music theory homework. Everyone has their own reasons to play and people need to lay off the whole "oh you don't have a life" crap. It's ridiculous. More and more people are getting into gaming, so I do agree that the stereotype is going away. Thank heavens...

It's not even that. I just hate how people look down at you for doing something you enjoy. They may enjoy hanging about doing nothing but you don't see us slating them because of what they choose to do with their time.

The definition of "no lifer" is not someone that's stronger than you. Some people need to realize this. You can never tell if someone is a true no lifer until you see them in person.

First, there's the RS stereotype that RS is a poor man's WoW, that Runescape is not a real MMO.

And everyone playing MMOs is a no life nerd that needs a girlfriend. :wall:

Well, I mean, plenty of people who play have a boyfriend/girlfriend. I personally wouldn't want to know if someone I was dating was playing WOW or something though.

EDITED: I didn't mean to cause any harm, geez.

So basically you rate people on whether they play MMO's? If someone plays an MMO they're not as manly as someone who plays sport or hangs around doing nothing all day? Someone who plays an MMO doesn't only play that MMO in their life, you know... they have other hobbies. I'm going to be blunt and say that post was pretty shallow.

I think the majority of MMO players are kids/teens anyway. A lot of people have played RS at one time, a lot of "cool" people too, in my old school at least. It's just some of us have stuck with it (i've been at it on and off for years).

Sure is, don't label me, im not a soup can!

skyrim_by_katri_n-d3hewko.png

Like you, I don't say that I play.

People seem to look down on it for some unknown reason, a lot of people in my school have knocked it and not even tried it.

I don't care if someone figures out I still play, who cares? Certainly not me.

Residua.png

Well, RuneScape is called a nerd's game because of the graphics. People just care about graphics that require like 3GB of RAM and 2.5+ GHZ. That's really the main point...

Im going to 110% agree, that was a very shallow post (can't find another adjective that described it as well) that was kinda the post we're trying to disprove here.... #-o

You couldn't be farther from the point I was saying.

I'm not saying the person them selves aren't masculine. I'm not rating or judging them at all, I just would prefer not to know. It'd just be kind of awkward asking what he does in his free time and have an answer shot back "Oh I like to play WOW for a few hours".

Still saying the same thing. Effectively you're saying that you have some sort of deep-set opinion about people who play MMO's. The whole fact you feel its awkward to talk to someone who plays MMO's shows something about yourself. And they wouldn't just say that they only play MMO's, I'm pretty sure they would mention the other things they take part in. Shows what view you have on people, eh? ;)

If you have a boyfriend, and he asks, "What do you do in your free time?" "Oh, I play Runescape..."

Boyfriend: "Erm, okay :|

I've always thought of the RS Stereotype as 95% of the game being 12 year olds playing in computer labs at their school, 4% Tip.It, and 1% adults who play it out of boredom.

But I think it's silly to think that RS Players are nerds. Anyone playing any game could be a nerd. Pretty much everyone loves Guitar Hero and it's very possible to be a GH Nerd (Look, he can play Acoustic Guitar Hero!). It's just the stereotype that comes with any game, I guess.

Oddment1.png

Yeah, I guess you do have a point. That would be the first thing that would pop into my head. "NERD". It's not the thing I actively look for in people. But I would in no way would say that playing an MMO makes you a nerd or geek. And it's certainly not a bad thing. As the example you used about rather than hanging out in a mall or whatever. It's just something you do in your free time.

And what are they supposed to say? "I listen to music and watch TV all day." "I play football with my buddies for 5 hours straight! " Its just a enjoyment. Being 'cool' and listening to music, watching MTV, do sports, (even drugs depending where you live  ) doesn't make someone less or more better than someone else.

Besides, what can people do in their freetime? TV, music, games, cook, shipmake? None of them are better than the other.

(NOTE: The entire post isn't directed to you, Laura. Like I wouldn't want a girl to say "I go to the gym for 4 hours and lift weights." then shows me her massive guns. :? But your post kinda started a little chain reaction of a post in my head. :geek: )

EDIT: Bean: That is a good point. If someone I knew honestly asked me what I did I'll probably tell them MMOs and moviemaking. But its not the only things I do. ;)
