Flag Burning.

Okay, in America, the flag is seen as a symbol for the beliefs that America was founded on, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, et cetera, and most importantly, freedom of speech. And these same people who practically worship the flag, and the beliefs that it represents seem to think that freedom of speech should suddenly not apply to flag burning(among other things.)... When they want to ban flag burning out of 'respect' for those same values, including freedom of speech. :wall:

I guess this is one of those rare cases where americans will be completely hypocritical about their so-called belief in their rights when said belief would interfere with their personal opinions.

And yes, I burn flags occasionally. The first time was out of curiousity, namely the curiousity about the chances of being shot for burning a flag in the South. (Relatively, the northern part of the South, but still.) After that, it was in protest of one thing or another. I think that that the real problem seems to be that people are not bothering to discover motivations, they just label us as communists, terrorists, or whatever the popular 'enemy figure' of the decade is. I, at least, do it to protest some law or action, etc. that I disagree with, not because I hate everything about this country. Let me say this again, I do not hate the country, or the ideals that it was founded on. I hate the way it has been corrupted to the point where the government is essentially a tool for the banking families, defense contractors, fossil fuel CEOs and the like. I hate what it has become, not what it was supposed to be.

There is no meaning or truth in life but that which we create for ourselves.

Wow, this is very sad. You all have to know the limits. Free speech and all that bull, burning a countries flag is obviously showing disrespect and extreme dislike towards that country. Free speech, yes but you HAVE TO KNOW THE LIMITS. You can't go around saying "I'm going to kill Reaper88888!!!" in real life because you would be arrested.

This is sad and very pathetic. Show some respect for the country you live in.

Thanks goes to reaper88888 for vindicating that point.

As is burning a flag in the USA.

Actually it's not. Congress has tried to make it illegal a number of times, but it's been overturned or denied by the Supreme Court on every occasion. Since the Supreme Court says flag burning is protected by the first and fourteenth amendments, congress have tried to introduce a Flag Desecration Amendment a number of times (most recently in 2006), but it never passed.

Wow, you live in Scotland and you know all that? Jeez...

And flag burning in the USA isn't illegal. But that doesn't make it good.

It's not actually a death threat to mealy say that your going to kill someone. There needs to be a certain mannerism about it.

Death threats impact someone else's rights, so I don't see their relevance to this discussion.

Speaking of desecration.. Anyone remember that press photo from when Bush was touring EU countries in 2003?

2sb7si8.jpg

Maybe he didn't know it counts as flag desecration though...

(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

Why would you burn a flag? Back in the day it might have been revolutionary, maybe. But today it just seems so unnecessary, and not really relevant.

No really. Why? You're seriously upsetting people for no reason at all?

If there is no reason and you fully know that this upsets other people, then it looks like your point is to show that people are overreacting. Well you're right - people do overreact when upset. I think we all know that already - I haven't learned anything new.

If someone burns the flag, they're burning the symbol of that country, what that country stands for, and expressing hate. I would be very offended if someone burned the American flag.

I do have justified reason it's called free-speech and is upheld by civilised countries.

Is that what a flag burner told you? Or is that your reaction to it based on what you feel the flag to represent?

Do you seriously think that every flag burner hates all that the country stands for?

and limiting free speech has nothing to do with what people find offensive, the limits should be on hate speech because it is truly harmful

Anyone who burns my country's flag is a friend of mine. Seriously. As for burning the flags of other countries, I don't see the problem either. They're just objects, aren't they? You can argue they're a symbol of king and country, patriotism, bla bla but then you're gonna sound more or less like a boring history book, and that is never cool. As for burning other objects, I like burning bits of paper at the edges and I know people who are artists when it comes to this stuff.

If everyone who said "I'll kill you" really meant it, the murder rate would skyrocket.
