At that age it's quite common that birthday parties will only be family events. What really makes me cry is that mop of hair. Yeah I don't get what's so sad about that picture. During my actual birthday which usually is on a weekday, my parents will buy me a small cake and we eat together just like that, and I celebrate with friends on the weekend after.
