Starting to Smoke

It won't kill you, but you won't end up smoking 1 or 2 a day from the sound of your post. Pack a day's expensive. Money-wise and health-wise. But, if you work at burger king, you don't exactly need to have pretty teeth or be able to run a mile, eh?

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

The one problem is that since it is your first try, you might get addicted to it quickly. Plus if you're not in a good financicial situation I wouldn't recommend smokes.

But if you do choose to smoke, just remember moderation.

I've been smoking about a pack a week for the last 6 months. On Sunday I had my first Rugby training session in about the same period of time. About 2/3rds of the way through the session I felt like I was going to throw up and I was light headed. This was all a result of smoking.

What you only consider 1-2 smokes a day now will soon turn into 2-3 packs a week as you get more addicted. I myself am now trying to cut back which is very hard, I'm not allowing to smoke on the weekdays and at most I'll smoke a pack over the weekend.

Remember I only started 6 months ago, 1-2 smokes a day will soon turn into 2-3 packs a week, don't kid yourself and say you wont become addicted like I did because smoking will [bleep] you up. See a doctor, try and get some stress relieving pills if you must but do not take up smoking to relieve stress as it will only add to it when you try to give up.

You flip burgers... you have no idea what real stress is.

Smoking won't relieve stress. Even if the first few times made you feel okay, in the future, if you happened to get addicted, the reprecussions later would cause stress many times higher than right now.

I doubt you even inhaled the smoke. Most 14 year olds can't do three cigs in 5 minutes, especially when you first try them.

It's quite likely that habitual cigarette use will lead to an addiction. Commercial cigarettes are manufactured with the intent of getting the user addicted. Smoking cigarettes will not help your financial situation, it will only make it worse. If you absolutely must smoke tobacco, perhaps hand-rolled cigarettes would be a better idea.

It's also worth recognizing the wide range of non-drug related activities that can help reduce daily stress. Naps, reading, meditation, visual art and music are common examples. Learning to play an instrument, like the guitar or harmonica (or both!), is also a great way to relax.

The best bet would be a combination of many activities. Variety is the spice of life. ;)

Most people when they begin to smoke don't even know how to inhale properly, it's not just sucking in the smoke, you then pull away the cigarette and inhale some air. Most people when they begin just inhale the smoke into their mouth and no air thinking they've inhaled.

When you start smoking and if you get a "head buzz" then you know you're inhaling.

Don't smoke... "one or two cigarettes" can turn into more before you know it. Besides, having "one or two cigarettes" will not many any of your problems disappear. As I'm sure other people have suggested, there are much better (and even healthy) ways to relieve stress. Just to name a few off the top of my head:

  • [*:15rywcqu]Jogging.

    [*:15rywcqu]Massages.

    [*:15rywcqu]Reading.

[*:15rywcqu]A hobby you're interested in? Many people enjoy art for not only fun but for stress-relief.

    [*:15rywcqu]Yoga/meditation (HUGE one).

And I'm sure you could think of several others that would benefit you in particular, because everyone is different.

I can't stress it enough... DON'T SMOKE. Sure you may here a story once in a while about Grandma Janie or Grandpa Joe who "smoked like a chimney and never had lung/health problems.." But if you get addicted, the chances are low that you will be that fortunate. If you start smoking one or two cigarettes every time you're stressed because you think it will help, soon you will panic if you're stressed and cannot get a cigarette. You will become dependent on the relief you may feel from smoking and will be unable to handle and face your real problems.

wut i was doing was breathing normally, replacing oxygen with a puff every 4th breathe. Amidoinitrite? no, i didnt close my throat when i inhaled it, like most do for their first. i didnt lock it in my mouth, i let it get in the windpipes

I started smoking about 4 months ago when I was 17 (18 now). A cigarette or two a day really does keep me from losing my mind at times. I have anger problems and lately anxiety problems but smoking has helped me just relax and take everything for what it is. I won't say that you should go smoke, I'm just saying it helps me relax and takes some of the stress off.

I smoke.

I think that if you feel the need to relax, smoking is a great way to relieve stress and anxiety. If you want a healthier way to do it, roll your own cigs. A pouch of tobacco gets me 80 cigs out of 5 dollars. After I got sick of spending nearly $5 per pack on Marb Reds, I decided to roll my own. They're not healthy, but they don't have as many chemicals and added junk that filtered cigs do. One or two per day is NOT going to shave that much off your life. It's the people that smoke a pack per day that are killing themselves.

1. Any recommendations on rolling tobacco brands? I've been considering rolling my own but I know very little about it..

oh trust me, i did :(

i was coughing for 10 minutes after. was painful

I always have to laugh at people like this. I've never coughed/choked from cigarette smoke and I've always found it fairly weak..

I've coughed on cigarette smoke before, but that's just because it's nasty. You can taste it. >_<

Regardless, you shouldn't even need pills or anything. Crying might help. Naps. Massages if you can get a little back rub from someone you know, since they're pretty expensive. Umm. Yeah. Pretty much "using" anything to "fix" your stress won't work. You'll end up more stressed from the problems just about anything will accumulate.

What a piece of irony! This whole thread is about tobacco, a drug many times more harmful and addicting than cannabis.

This is against Tip.It rules, plus it's immoral.

How is this immoral?

Honestly, I smoke around a pack a day, and I can tell you it's definitely not worth it. I started at just a couple a day like you also.

It costs a ton of cash, makes you pretty much inept at anything sports or hell even exercise related, and your clothes will reek. Not worth it in the least bit, quit now if you've started, even if you like it.

Why is it a problem now?

I suppose it isn't even a problem now, it's merely the mods enforcing the rules. I think previous mods didn't enforce the rules because they could see the discussion was causing no harm. I would love to be able to have drug related discussions but until a new wave of mods comes in, it looks like we're out of luck. Or we could contact an admin and see if we can't work something out.

Nicotine is an antidepressant/antianxiety. Whenever i'm really stressed or get feelings of anxiety, i'd usually just wait it off to calm myself down. But if something big happened, or something big is going to happen, i'd feel like [cabbage] for really long

starting the end of summer i started smoking whenever I got that feeling. One through and it'd take it away. I've only needed minus one time, where i was stressed out over something for about 12 hours and I had four. Since i've started, ive only had eight or nine cigarettes total, i've never finished a pack

The point i'm trying to make is not to smoke, but to limit yourself if you know you can. Like any other drug, your body builds resistance. If you smoke often, it won't be /as effective, and the urges to smoke will only add to stress. I can limit myself. If you can't, then i would high suggest not smoking, as it will only make things worse.

personally i hate people who smoke and just smoking in general. Because ur stress it doesnt mean u should do smoking or alcohol or drugs. this will only make it worse. i know ur stressed but sometimes u just gotta take it like a man. dont start smoking because it is really bad for ur health even thought u may think otherwise. also smoking just ruins ur self esteem. + makes u look older and girls dont like it. there r so many things bad about smoking.

solution: face it like a man. u need things to raise ur self esteem. get a girlfriends or friends to help u out of ur situation. facing this alone is hard i must admit but if u have good friends pushing u up then this will help tremendously.

( really get a new job too)

Why is it a problem now?

This forum is supposed to be "PG-13". Seeing you have to be 18 in order to even buy tobacco, (in America) whats the points of discussing something a 13 year old can't do for another 5+ years?

But using that logic we also shouldn't discuss:

-Driving (must be 14 for your permit, 16 for intermediate license, 18 for full license in America)

-M rated video games

-R rated films

-Anything sexual

-Real life pictures should not be allowed (too risky for younger members)

-Tattoos (18 years old in America)

-Alcohol (21 years old in America)

-Or anything else that a 13 year old cannot do until later in life

That logic would make for a very boring forum.

@Yomyth: I think you're very closed minded towards controlled substances. I recommend making some friends who use those types of substances and seeing they're not bad people at all.
