Dragon plate vs Barrows plate

Dragon was never in a competition for best armor. Well, at the start, when Rune was only available, it was, but now that Barrows has practically usurped that, Dragon is only really usable for looks. Kinda like the useless Partyhats that you see some people with nowadays, eh?

For clarification, yes I would get a Dragon Plate. I can't say that I really care about cost-effectiveness, nor do I care to repair my armor twice a week - I'd rather just keep going with my Slayer tasks, thanks.

[No, I don't have a huge wad of cash, but what good is 21M + items doing me if I can't have fun with it? Can't say I'm the type of person to sit there and stare at wealth, and call that fun, either.]

At least the new Dragon Plate has better stats than a Bandons Plate for the extra price. I'm just hoping over eager fashion freaks will start dumping their Bandos for D Plate money and lower the price on Bandos, which will get me a good deal.

Although this doesn't make much logical sense i'd prefer the dragon plate. Not because it looks cool but for the minor convineance of not having to repair them. I know the price of barrows armor is negligiable compared to the 30mil it takes to purchase a dragon plate, but i have this strange feeling in me that just hates repairing items. This strange feeling :? compels me to avoid degrading equipment.

Well, it degrades in 15 hours of combat, which lasts a while. I also get that feeling of hating to repair. I used to use D legs, but now its DH all the way. 60k really isin't much.

I actually thought Barrows armor lasts 20 hours before fully degrading?

And taking that into account, you could repair your full Barrows armor hundreds of times before ever reaching the price of a Dragon Platebody, and it really doesn't take much effort. You can grab a couple hundred thousand coins, Home Port, walk about 100 paces to Bob's Axe Shop, and you're set to go.

You can even get a discount of up to 50% if you have a decent Construction Level and a high Smithing level. O.O

Any melee-based armor without a str bonus is, with rare exception, worthless. After a certain point added defense isn't even noticeable except under the most extreme situations, such as boss monsters, whereas the added strength is visible in higher hits.

In addition, I avoid using barrows as much as possible since I hate having to think about repairing it. As soon as it hits 50%, I usually end up fixing it just for the fear that eventually it'll be at the lower end of that 50% and degrade to 25% at which point I won't even be able to finish a task.

That's technically not true. At one point, Jagex was really behind dragon armor as being the apex armor. The entire reasoning behind having barrows armor degrade was to maintain the status of dragon armor (so despite being statistically inferior it would continue to hold some advantage). Frankly, Jagex completely mishandled dragon armor by delaying the release of the parts. Originally this was an effective tool for building hype, but over the years they've inundated us with viable alternatives which have served to devalue dragon armor. In terms of both looks and function, dragon has been completely outmoded by bandos gear (except the boots, of course).

The situation is even worse with shields. I dread them bringing out the dragon kite, given the absurd number of powerful shield items with all sorts of bonuses these days. The only way that Jagex could truly make dragon a really viable armor would be to make it more readily accessible like it has with most dragon weapons which can be purchased for reasonable prices.

I'm afraid Dragon is now merely for show right now. It's sad when things like that happen, but if they bring in some kind of set effect when you get full dragon (Full Helm, Plate, Legs/Skirt, Boots, RFD gloves, Kite, any weapon), when they do finish off the set, they could bump it back into being the armour to have in combat as well as looking awesome. It should compare well stat-wise against barrows, as a much more expensive alternative which won't degrade.

Hey, as long as the dragon plate gets the job done, for whatever use it is used for, it's perfectly alright to have one for showing of your wealth. What, next are you going to condemn people who might want to wear their partyhats to GWD because there are no stat bonuses? Because, quite frankly, they are better than you (within the context of the game at least...) Only joking . But seriously, just let the dog have it's bone

Dragon is pretty much now bought just for looks, but to be honest, who does not want to look like this? :D

Can't help to notice that the only people to comment on the ugliness of the plate are people with generally less than 270QP. I obviously have no proof of that in this case, so my post should be discounted and thrown in the bin. Damn, i'm good...Hey wait, I just flamed myself! I STAND BY MY INITIAL STATEMENT

And +300 for all defences is pretty good for an armor, even in this day and age, given that full rune is like +200

A dragon plate doesn't degrade right?

Even if most of the critics didn't have 270qp, that means nothing since quests are a joke anyway. There's no challenge to most of them and a few penalize you for finishing them (Path of Glouphie unlocks warped terrorbirds as a slaying task, for instance...). Give me skills any day, leave the quest capes for the guys who don't even have four 99s.

  • 2 weeks later...

Complete barrows sets cost 25k an hour to use roughly. With armor stand even less.

So at worst it would take you 600 hours of barrows use to make the maintenance costs equal what the d plate costs currently. Probably closer to 1000 for most people.

EDIT: Barrows looks really nice too.

OH S***! He/she/it is back!

That's lovely, but does my lack of questpoints somemehow visually impair me? Does completing While Guthix Sleeps somehow educate my eyes, so that I can finally tell that the dragon plate isn't actually as ugly as what I first took it to be?

The dragon chain looks far better in my opinion. And I'll stick to my 320-odd-thousand GP Torag's plate, thank you very much.
