Damn. If this guy was really going to go through with it, he could have done some serious damage. Dozens of lives could have easily been taken. Well done, JaGex.

That's what I was thinking. If they found weapons.. you got to take it seriously. I mean, I don't know. This stuff is upsetting.

Props on the Tim McIlrath avatar, and chamber the cartridge lyrics by the way. Great band.

Thanks. Rise is amazing. Love everything I've heard and loved them live twice.

OT: I really respect JaGex for doing everything possible to help to police. IP leading to address, ect. Really great attention to detail, and some good luck as well.

Good. Let's hope this paves the way for the end of online anonymity.

Are you serious? This isn't even going to be the tiniest step for the end.

Yep, I am serious. This is the main reason I would like to see everyone forced to prove and validate their real life ID before doing anything on the internet. Obviously there could be some problems in censorship countries; this would have to be thought out. But stuff like this, or youtube videos of people going 130 in a 60 zone? Nowdays it is simply too easy to hide behind a curtain of anonymity.

Was it really a Man? or a boy?

Don't you know the first rule of MMO's? Anyone higher level than you has no life, and anyone lower than you is a noob.

Just because a lot of idiots are on the internet, it does not mean anonymity should be removed.

[edit] Maybe there should be more internet "moderators"? If you didn't know, the FBI has a cyber division which mainly targets File sharing sites and child pornography sites. The movie "Untraceable" depicts it well.

Firstly, I want to know why he went around bragging about it on a RuneScape Forum in the first place.

Secondidly, why did he allow for the police to search his house if he did have guns and journal entries? He could have said no and ditched the stuff before the cops showed up with a warrant.

Thirdidly, I am glad he was caught. He was another one of those dumb guys thinking he was going to be a hero by taking innocent lives. I hope he enjoys his life in jail.

Absolute anonymity isn't entirely a good thing (especially sites providing medical or military advice should, and already do, require it's members to verify they are actually licensed in that particular profession), but you have to consider it realistically:

The financial burden of identifying 1.5 billion[1] internet users is massive. Who exactly, or what country's government will pay for developing the infrastructure, hiring employees, setting up the technology that prohibits direct internet access without identification?

Completely removing anonymity is also technologically very hard, if not impossible to implement. Take tip.it for example; We barely have resources to monitor tens of thousands of users let alone check a fax machine every day for personal verification/ID cards to match the names put in user's profiles. Verification is only a viable option for big organisations that have the money & manpower to verify their own users that submit content.

Maybe there should be more internet "moderators"? If you didn't know, the FBI has a cyber division which mainly targets File sharing sites and child pornography sites. The movie "Untraceable" depicts it well.

Dozens of them already exist, though currently only in the USA like you mentioned. These are guys who get paid to pretty much do nothing except find bad or illegal websites & provide their technical information to bust them or track the vast proxy networks they operate through to send illegal data, and find the real operator.

I'd definitely see it as a positive advance if more of them were hired from federal funds.

There is now a follow-up report:

Pohatcong Township man admits to online threats to shoot up a school, authorities say

Tuesday, December 09, 2008

By TOM QUIGLEY

The Express-Times

POHATCONG TWP. | A 2008 graduate of Phillipsburg High School admitted to posting online threats to shoot up an unspecified school, according to court records released Monday.

Donald L. Vroom, 18, of the 200 block of Mountain Road in the township, was arrested Sunday on terroristic threat and weapons charges, according to the records in Belvidere Superior Court.

Vroom, an honor roll student his senior year, posted the threat on a discussion forum on the online gaming Web site Jagex.com, reads the probable cause affidavit filed by New Jersey State Police.

The operators of the United Kingdom-based Web site contacted the New Jersey State Police Regional Intelligence Agency, prompting the investigation, court records state.

State police reported going to Vroom's home Sunday after tracking down the computer used to post the site using information provided by Jagex.com, including the writer's screen name and Internet Protocol address.

Vroom used the screen name "the_martyr_1," documents show.

"Mr. Vroom admitted to making the statements and granted us written consent to search his bedroom," reads the probable cause affidavit.

Investigators said they found and seized a journal, several firearms, knives and fireworks.

Vroom is free after posting 10 percent of $20,000 bail.

He is charged with making terroristic threats, possession of a handgun, possession of a sawed-off shotgun, possession of a switchblade, manufacturing a home-made black-powder rifle and possession of fireworks.

Information about the wording in the posting or what school Vroom allegedly plotted to shoot up was not available from authorities.

Phillipsburg schools Superintendent Mark B. Miller said Monday night he had not been apprised of the alleged threat.

A woman who answered the phone at Vroom's home Monday declined comment and hung up.

It's clear that Mr. Vroom was heading down the road of terrorism and it's good to see he was apprehended with such speed.

He couldn't dodge the law and he is obviously a cad, ill actually! For demonstrating their willingness to help police and such, on daring to blow the whistle, Jagex deserve praise.

He won't be sipping martinis, sand sifting through his toes, for some time.

Deja vu:

Online school shooting threat gets Kamiakin High School student arrested

By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer

KENNEWICK -- A Kennewick teen playing an online fantasy adventure game learned a real-life consequence after reportedly telling another player he was planning a shooting at his school.

The 14-year-old Kamiakin High School freshman was arrested at his home on suspicion of felony harassment, said Kennewick police Sgt. Ken Lattin.

Players can chat online to other players during the game, and the teen reportedly made his threat against Kamiakin High while chatting with a girl from Oregon.

Detectives have no evidence the student had access to weapons or that he made any threats while at school, Lattin said.

Kennewick police were told about the threat at 6:15 p.m. Monday by the safety department of the online game RuneScape.

RuneScape is an Internet-based game with headquarters in Cambridge, England, which has about 5 million subscribers worldwide, Lattin said.

The game site said RuneScape is a "massively multiplayer online game set in a fantasy world of warring races, ravaged landscapes and sinister powers."

A 12-year-old girl from Eugene, Ore., playing the game alerted the safety department about the threat, Lattin said. She said the 14-year-old student had made a comment to her that he was planning a school shooting.

The game's safety department personnel verified the threat had been made and provided contact information and addresses for the witness and the suspect, Lattin said.

The Kennewick teen was arrested, then released to his parents.

"This is an important issue of safety that we take seriously," said Police Chief Ken Hohenberg. "We called out detectives last night to investigate this case. You cannot put a price tag on the cost to keep our students safe."

Kennewick School District officials were notified about the incident Monday night.

No notices were sent home with students Tuesday because the incident didn't happen on campus, but the student who made the threat was emergency expelled, said Lorraine Cooper, district spokeswoman.

School officials were using the incident as an opportunity to talk with students about why it's important to tell a trusted adult about threats or other incidents that could affect student safety at school.

"We want students to feel comfortable coming forward with information whenever they feel something is not quite right or have solid information that there is a threat," Cooper said. "We want them to come forward and tell an adult."

The district participates in the Choose to Trust program with the Kennewick Police Department and Tri-Cities Crime Stoppers, which encourages students to tell a teacher, counselor, officer or trusted adult that something bad is going to happen.

"I think it's important for people to understand it's just not acceptable for people to make these kinds of threats and if they hear about it we need to know," she said.

Police officials also commend the girl for "being brave enough" to report the incident and do the right thing, Sgt. Lattin said.

"We hope other students can learn from this incident and the importance to report suspicions and dangerous information such as this," Lattin said.

RuneScape is produced by Jagex, which stands for Java Gaming Experts. The company has a specialized unit, called the community safety team, that is dedicates solely to the well-being of its players, the company website said.

Jagex are such wanna-be police.

I guess we've got to be careful what we say now over RuneScape.

They're a corporation with an image to look after.

It's not even bad in the UK; In Japan if a company's name even remotely gets associated with murder threats, scandals, organised crime or corruption, the CEO's sometimes commit suicide.

Jagex may not have publicly traded shares that fluctuate along with news reports, but it's still bad press for them if it was found out people make threats on their game & nobody does anything about it.

Hell in the worst case, a small percentage of people making the threats actually fulfill them. Countless mass murderers have posted warning videos, talked in chat rooms and sent media packages on forums prior to doing something horrible..

I didn't say it was a bad thing. :P I actually don't mind Jagex reporting that as, like you said, it could be possible and would have terrible consequences.
