It does this by releasing digestive enzymes from the acrosome, a structure in the sperm head, to digest the outer "jelly" coating to the egg. The mechanism to release these enzymes is based on the binding of the sperm head to this "jelly" layer (called the zona pellucida) and is very species specific. Genetic compatibility of the sperm to the egg would be another problem.
