January 8, 200917 yr Congratulations, your Summoning level is now 99! Why not go talk to Pikkupstix in Taverly? He might have a special reward for only true masters of Summoning! In a few days, it will be 1 full year of Summoning. As everybody knows, Summoning was Released last January, 2008, along with the infamous Chaos Tunnels, the Summoning Tutorial, Wolf Whistle, and more. Summoning is really impressive. So impressive, it has changed the way Runescape functions... forever. As most of you know, the first batch of Familiars and stuff was probably one of the worst Skill updateds to date. There were only so many familiars, pets to obtain, hard to obtain charms, Horrible timers, Horrible armour (head armour that held scrolls), horrible prices for Summoning Shards (costed about 50gp per shard, was changed about 2 weeks later to 25gp each, and people were refunded) and only 5 spots to recharge Summoning points (excluding Summoning potions). When it was first released, it wasn't worth even training. But that all changed with the Summoning Update 2 in March of 2008. March of 2008 marked the Revolution of Summoning: Summoning Update 2. With this came: Many, and I mean MANY, more familiars to be summoned, more charms to use, mini "Summoning Obelisks" scattered around the word (only able to recharge points at these), improved Beast of Burdon inventories, and soon after this, Bogrog was added to buy Pouches in return for Summoning Shards! After this, Summoning was put into a position that most people say: "Summoning is the best skill to train now." However, with such a great skill, will come major cash crashing! A minimum cash ammount to get 99 Summoning is 70m, but some people report that it takes as high as 500m to get it with other methods! However, cash does get re-paid in the best ways possible. Remember that you can swap your pouches for Shards at Bogrog, but the abilities of some Familiars makes them getting the levels for! For example, a Bunyip heals 2 hitpoints every 15 seconds, and Spirit Terrorbirds / Bull Ants, combined with their corresponding Scrolls, can be used for unlimited Running! I would have to say myself, despite being too poor to actually train Summoning, I'm a huge fan of this skill. The ability of certain familiars, the rarity of the Summoning Skillcape, and much more make this, perhaps, the #1 skill trained during Summoning Update 2! Personally, when I look at all the key factors at Summoning, (Charms, training, ect) I have to give this skill a 9/10. .5 points taken away from the price (if you take the 500m method), and .5 for the Epic Failure of the main Summoning Update. If SU2 was never implamented, and SU1 was left alone, this would be the most untrained skill in Runescape (perhaps). But I have to say, this is the skill that I have a Real dreamm 99 in! Thank you for reading A Year of Summoning: A year in review. ~Starman945 My blogTwitterTwitch Stream
January 8, 200917 yr Started off bad, but the revised version with pak 2 was incredible. Don't know how i lived without it now. Want to be my friend? Look under my name to the left<<< and click the 'Add as friend' button!Big thanks to Stevepole for the signature!^
January 8, 200917 yr More of a history then a review. ;) Your numbers are quite off, but whatever about specifics. Hurrah to Summoning. [Summoning guide (AOW)] [Slayer guide] [Melee & Brawl player]
January 8, 200917 yr I'm almost absolutely sure when the Summoning Batch 1 first came out, it was easier to obtain charms. In fact, if I remember correctly when Batch 2 came out they decreased all monsters drop rates for charms by quite a bit.

In fact, if I remember correctly when Batch 2 came out they decreased all monsters drop rates for charms by quite a bit. No no, they increased the odds a bit (I think it was after batch 2...) but they deleted it because their system was way off. After they nerfed it, it was still better than before. Summoning isn't as hard to raise now as people make it out to be. [Summoning guide (AOW)] [Slayer guide] [Melee & Brawl player]
January 8, 200917 yr TBH I think Summoning was a good Update and it helped a buttload of times. Also I love the pets. Wongton is better than me in anyway~~
January 8, 200917 yr Author What's there to discuss? You just told us what we knew..How about you flame less, and read the title more. Your bad additude is the reason of Global Warming as well tbh. My blogTwitterTwitch Stream
January 8, 200917 yr Completely agree with your review, the 1st batch was horrible and I cant believe I got to like lvl 92/93 before the 2nd batch came out, lost so much on the pouches because of no shard trading guy  Overall, couldnt imagine living without it now. 2376/2376 total achieved - May 2009 Retired Dec 2009

January 8, 200917 yr I'm only 75 now, but I love the skill, currently hoarding charms until 79, and all this through Slayer! The Terrorbird is possibly one of the most useful things ever invented for Runescape. And I can't stress how much easier my life is with a Bunyip by my side! For anyone who says summoning is expensive, i've managed to profit off it fom the year. So yeh its only expensive if you burst or just sit at waterfiends for 100hours.
January 8, 200917 yr People say that summoning has completely changed Runescape, but has it really? Sure, it made things EASIER, but not so much was changed. Plus, a good number of summons are rarely, if ever, used. I'm not saying the ones that are used- Bunyip, War Tortoise, Terrorbird- aren't handy, but I really haven't used summoning much in my day to day play. If the CORPORAL beast is this hard, imagine how hard a GENERAL or COLONEL beast would be. a corporal is not even an admirable rank in armies that use that ranking system. Yeah, it is a pking minigame, so any arguments anybody makes will probably be biased. The best way this will end :Everybody just says,"I'm not arguing with you anymore, goodbye."The worst way this will end: I don't really know, psychological warfare? Worldwide thermonuclear war? Pie eating contest?

January 8, 200917 yr My highest summoning level is 4 on my main. I get along quite fine, there's been no familiar that's made me feel I absolutely must waste my time with summoning (I still collect all my charms just in case).
January 8, 200917 yr My highest summoning level is 4 on my main. I get along quite fine, there's been no familiar that's made me feel I absolutely must waste my time with summoning (I still collect all my charms just in case). You cant say there's no familiar that you want, if you've never trained it to find out what they're like. I cba looking up your stats to see for myself why you have no need for familiars, that's your choice. If your not 99 RC, try a ghraak, it's faster than the abyss. If your not 99 Slayer, try a bunyip, it's priceless on the way to slayer. If your not 99 Fishing, try a granite lobster, it's extra xp on the way for the same time and effort. There's many others but if your set on not even TRYING a skill, so be it.
January 8, 200917 yr i use summoning for everything - a granite lobster for fishing, unicorn for slaying and bosses, terrorbird for running and as bob, lurker or ghraak for rc,....... its the most usefull skill we have! maybe most people overlooked some things in summoning batch 2 tho - it wasnt thaaat great - but was good of course :) like: when they changed shard prices from 50 to 25, they also doubled the shards needed to create a pouch. everyone was happy, but they changed nothing at all...

I stated that there's no familiar out there which I looked at and said goddamn I need to get myself one of them there familiars and i'm absolutely going to waste my time raising summoning to get it.

If your saying your not trainin cause it costs alot, thats a different story, but as for a waste of time, i beg to differ. The time i have saved myself on slayer tasks / RCin so far , far outweighs the time i spent running off my charms for lvls. If nothing else, it's total lvls + xp. As for costs, did you stop yourself with construction? It's worse than summonin, unless you have a guilded alter, it's not worth it. At the end of the day, it's your choice, but what i am trying to say is go out there and try it, you never know, the chance are you might actually like it.

I don't believe it's worth the combat level gain. I like to play things like clan wars and no summoning gives me an edge over my foes. At combat level 98 I will be 99 attack, 99 strength and 99 hitpoints. With, say, 80 summoning i'll be lvl 108. When i'm pking it's ok because the levels don't count but I wouldn't find getting destroyed by everyone my level in places like clan wars as fun. I'd be taking a big risk raising summoning. Risking my non-pking enjoyment. I would need to see evidence of the level of ownage a familiar could be so that I can see the risk and the hassle of raising summoning as worth it. So far no familiar has caught my eye.
January 8, 200917 yr I must say I pretty much ignored Summoning for much of last year. The costs of everything put me off and I generally wasn't in the mood to fight stuff to collect charms. Instead I got all the nooby 99s, Cooking, Fletching, Firemaking, as well as Fishing and Woodcutting which aren't quite as nooby lol. I only started playing again properly at the beginning of last year so I figured getting some easy skills finished would be a good start in getting back into the game. This year however things are going to change and I have decided that my skill goals for 2009 include 99 Defence, Hitpoints and Summoning. I expect this to take up most of the year because I still haven't got into the hardcore fighting mood and get bored after a while of charm collecting and either do other stuff like Stealing Creation or just log off. After seeing what all the really cool familiars can do from my friend who is already 99 I have really changed my tune as it were from being rather apathetic to the skill (mostly due to experience of batch 1) to being really into it. Rarely am I seen without a familiar or pet in-game and I expect it to soon come to a time where I am never without. 2.75% of Crimson charms collected lol. January 8, 200917 yr I adore summoning. It's a great gift at a high but not unreasonable price. I've spent little to no time actively traning summoning. I train slayer, and have collected a very respectable amount of charms. Leveling summoning is incredibly fast once you have the charms, which for me just sort of came in through other training. The money is not insignificant, but well worth it. Bunyips, tortoises, granite lobbies, and titans are worth their weight in gold.
January 8, 200917 yr I'm 69 Summoning, and I've recently gone f2p due to circumstances beyond my control (can't mooch off of mommy). It is seriously heartbreaking to play Runescape now. When I fish, I can't help but think that this would be so much better with my trusty Ibis. When I do anything that involves running, I pull my hair as my energy hits zero. I don't know how I survived before Summoning. Runescape just wouldn't be (or in my case, isn't) the same without it. Also, I miss Slayer. I always used my Overlord or Bunyip. OH GOD. To put it bluntly, [bleep] off.
