For those who don't know Microsoft has released Windows 7 beta to the public to download, and topic is more of a question then anything, but has anyone actually been able to download it? I get to the download page were they give you a serial key but I can't actually download the beta when I hit Download Now. Has anyone else had this problem?

I went to download it, and it was fine.

I cancelled the download though, after looking at images on Google. It looks no different from Vista in any way.

I've been running Vista Business x32 for about a month now, and it's pretty good. I wouldn't upgrade to Windows 7 in a rush. ::'

If you do manage to get your download sorted, let me know how it runs, I'm quite intrested.

Just because it doesn't look different, doesn't mean it's not improved.

I heard Windows 7 runs much faster than Vista.

Heh, that all depends. My vista is pretty fast and responsive, but then I've got a fast computer. XP is still a bit faster on my system though, but that's only due to it not having all the visual effects. Which brings me to my point of how it looks - the same visual style of vista, basically says to me it will be just as slow, as this is what slows vista down. :?

Yeah you had to download in Internet explorer because Microsoft is using a download manager that uses IE.

I have been playing around with it and it's rock stable. It seems faster than Vista and more polished. Every minor thing I didn't like about Vista has been fixed with Windows 7. The control panel and where some settings are takes omse time getting used to but it makes it easier when you know where they are. I like the new UAC. You can turn down the annoyances and only prompt when software is trying to install itself and not for every damn thing.

I liked it so much, I changed my laptop's main operating system to it. It detected my wireless card and installed the drivers without me having to do anything which is a huge plus so I don't need to transfer a driver from a flash drive to get online.

I've been using it for awhile but it gets annoying when things freeze or don't work. Ah well, it's only a beta.

I have had it for a few days it is alot faster no doubt. Not as many background processes. I think they copied vista way to much. Still a few compatibility issues. One of the big ones for me is skype.

Windows 7 will have a redesigned UI, some of which is already implemented in the form of an early release. Someone else would have to tell you how to unlock it, though, I can't remember how.

I just installed it and it seems pretty awesome,

except for the fact that It doesn't recognise my video card (Nvidia GeForce 8200M G laptop integrated) it

just has the VGA enables, in the Device manager. Supposedly Windows Update is supposed to download

the drives for it, but it doesn't (maybe because its not recognized >_<). And the vista driver for it

doesn't work either saying that my hardware doesn't match the driver I'm trying to install.

Also I run it in the VM virtual Machine. Any help here?

It seems that they pretty much just tried to improve on Vista, not redesign an largely different system like they did from XP to Vista. I've got the beta now, and high hopes for the finished product ::'

Well they didn't screw up Vista. If it wasn't for the negative press against Vista and people tried it for themselves it would have been a huge success. It was a gigantic bandwagon that bashed Vista without them even using it for more than 5 minutes.

If your running it in a virtual machine, it doesn't detect your actual hardware. Instead it detects what the virtual machine says it has for hardware. You then need to install the tools that come with the virtual machine software. It's called VMware tools in VMware. Make sure you set the VM to be for Windows Vista because Windows 7 is quite similar.

Yeah it does run much faster than Vista, which already ran much faster than XP on my computer. That means, it's the fastest I know, although Ubuntu is still faster in loading at the beginning :P.

I have had no issues yet, exept a BSOD at the laptop shutdown, just after installing some drivers. But anyway, just a beta, I'll just send the feedback and the dmp file.

I got the beta and LOVE it. I have tried Vista and couldn't stand it, but all the things that annoyed me about Vista are fixed in Windows 7 (unless Microsoft screw it up, don't rule it out  ) It also runs very fast on my computer.

And ya, you need to download it via Internet Explorer. Mozilla won't work :wall:

How do I use it, while keeping my normal vista OS safe and working, can I dual boot?

So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth,

These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf,

Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in,

Cos you can make a difference, you can change everything,

Just let your dreams be your pilot, your imagination your fuel,

Tear up the book and write your own damn rules,

Use all that heart, hope and soul that you've got,

And the love and the rage that you feel in your gut,

And realise that the other world that you're always looking for,

Lies right here in front of us, just outside this door,

And it's up to you to go out there and paint the canvas,

After all, you were put on the earth to do this,

So shine your light so bright that all can see,

Take pride in being whoever the [bleep] you want to be.

The beta is awesome. Much, much faster, it booted in like 20 seconds. Currently downloading graphics drivers though.

Sorry for being a lil stupid, but how?

Normally I'm pretty good with computers, though never dual booted before. It's a learning experience for me.

I did, and downloaded it when other people were crying because the link wasn't on the windows 7 page lol. I downloaded it from msdn. The links are gone now though.

Alright, open up Control Panel and then Administrative Tools and then computer Management. On the list to the left, you'll see a subsection called "Storage" click on that and then Disk Management. More than likely you'll either have two or one disk partions already there. So, right click on the larger partion (OS), it might be labeld as C: and hit "shrink volume." A query will come up, and tell you how much space you can partion. You're going to need at least 30GB of space, so if you can't shrink it by that much, don't try to install W7. Once you shrink it, another partion will be labeled "unallocated," right click on that partion and hit "New Simple Volume." Just make sure you're formating the maximum space on that partion, which should be there by default. And make sure it's NTFS(for W7). You've now partioned and formated a separate drive in Windows. Now all you have to do is insert the Windows 7 CD and click on the new drive you just made. MAKE SURE IT'S THE DRIVE YOU JUST MADE, OR YOU WILL ERASE OR UPGRADE YOUR CURRENT VERSION OF WINDOWS.

compmanagment2tv0.png[/hide]

(Oh and my partion was "Free Space" not "Unallocated" because I just deleted the existing format, so don't worry if yours doesn't look exactly like that.

I found formatting my hard disk to be complicated and tedious, so I put it in a Virtual Machine instead. I took a slight hit from performance (one core instead of two), but it ran kinda smooth.

I'm not sure what's fundamentally changed. It reminds me of Vista with less bloat to it. Great, but not much of an improvement in my eyes. My only hope is that when the real deal comes out, you're never logged in as the Administrator account, and programs don't need it. Bad things happen when you're made the admin...
