Who has seen the trailer? If not, here's the link (couldn't get youtube thing to work): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4blSrZvPhU

I just finished re-reading the novel, which I can easily say is one of the best things I've read in a while, and I think this movie could go either way. I guess it's that way with a lot of movies that are adapted from comics or books but I don't really know with this one. It seems like they've got a pretty good handle on how I would've portrayed Rorschach so that alone will probably make me go see it. If they can carry along his storyline well, I think the movie has a good chance of not disappointing unlike a lot of the movies that have come from comics. If you haven't read any of the comics or the book (collection of all 12 of the comics) then I strongly advise you to, I would say that they're slightly advanced though.

What do you think of the trailer? How did you like the book?

The first time I read Watchmen I thought it was the best comic book story I had read. Then I read Sandman, and that became my favourite. I just recently re-read Watchmen (got the Absolute edition which is awesome) and it became my favourite again. Still have to do a second read through of Sandman to decide which one stands multiple viewings better.

The movie looks awesome, and while I am disappointed they changed the end I understand that movies and graphic novels are two different media and one-to-one adaptations won't take full advantage of the medium they are re-done in.

I think I'll have to check out Sandman since you compared it to Watchmen :P .

But they changed the ending? How? Quite honestly I didn't exactly love the ending to the book, I mean it was good and all but I don't know...I guess because it's unlike most comic book kind of endings if you know what I mean. Also it wasn't what I was expecting the first time I read it.

Well the only comparison between them is that they are usually the top two on people's lists of favourite graphic novels. There's good reason for that, they are both masterpieces. Sandman is roughly five times as long though, it takes a little longer to get into. The entirety of Watchmen is great whereas Sandman has some down parts. But there are parts of Sandman that are just epic.

[hide=Watchmen graphic novel spoilers]They changed the ending of the movie by not having the huge squid monster in it. I guess they thought it was too weird for and average audience, and that is true. I think they explained how they had it ending but I didn't want to read that because of spoilers. Since there is no squid monster, a lot of the story doesn't fit. For example Rorschach was trying to figure out why artists and scientist kept disappearing, and that was because Ozymandias was bringing them to that island to work on the squid. He's the "villain" behind everything, and when he teleports the squid into New York they basically say they "couldn't stop him from saving the world" because it draws the two super powers at the time together (USA and USSR). But since none of that is happening I have no idea what the end of the movie is going to be.[/hide]

I've read it, because I heard things about it, and then saw my Mom had the collection. It was actually the first actual Graphic Novel I've read... I'll probably see the movie, but I'd have to read it again. I was only 12 or 13 when I read it, I can't remember much at all.

Damn, I was going to start this thread (about the book rather than the movie)

A great book.

Judging by the trailer, the movies gonna be great too.

(Already released first 22 min of it) < I'll link it If i can find it.

I'm already a Watchmen fan (since a long time.)

So Ive already booked ma' tickets.

coming out on

3/6/9

Going to the Midnight Screening ( get it 3 , 6, 9 hands of a clock \' )

anyway,

@indyfan

The Sandman is definitley a good series,

but Neil gaiman, just hasn't and problably will not recieve the Cult, legend status that Alan Moore has.

Still a good series though.

Better if you read it in order.

makes a lot more sense.

EDIT: Just read the post about the giant monster not being there.

What !

that sucks.

Wonder how they'll make 4 milllion New Yorks die.

In the blink of an eye. :-k

@Adrenal: Probably should hide some of that in spoiler warnings for the people who haven't read the novel yet. But for what I expect they will change the ending into:

[hide=]I'm guessing they are going to make Dr. Manhattan into the bad guy somehow.[/hide]

What !

No way.

I wish alan moore was to direct, got an offer, rejected it though.

Any way if they did do what you said above, it'll completely reverse the efffect of the last chapter, and of the mask killer theory.

And what use is ozymandius (unless he made him do it.)

I dont think, it will happen. Dont wan't it to happen.

  • 1 month later...

Criticisms are out.

Apparently, the story's narration is terrible. No real character development. Damn.

It truly is 'unfilmable'. Well, at least, in the conventional sense.

The complete experience would come with the mini-movie with the Black Freighter frame story and the written background material about each of the heroes.

I'm not much of a superhero man, but for some reason I always go to the cinema to watch them. :') This one seems to be more serious and the Graphic Novel is suposed to be very good. I'm going to see it on saturday, digital showing. I hope it's got something to laugh in it, not too much of that serious stuff. But I'm afraid that there won't be much to laugh.

It's supposed to parody every other superhero.

But in this movie the characters themselves become what they are supposed to be parodying. (according to reviews)

Terrible. I'll still watch it though.

Zach Snyder hired on Broadway actors, nobody anybodies heard of.

I can't believe they are taking out the monster though, it was an integral part of the story.

Plus, I'm happy they took out the black freighter, I hated those parts of the comic so bad. They bored the crap out of me.

Can't wait to see Rorschach stand there while the guy gets his throat slit open. Thats gonna be great. So will the part where he puts the dudes head in a fryer.

And, as all my friends say:

"Everyones going to IMAX theaters to bask in the glory of Dr. Manhattens giant glowing wang."

I'm sure though he's going to be wearing something though...

It really wasn't though...the explosion is what killed the people, not the monster. The Comedian find out about the monster is easy enough to change, they probably just made him find a bomb being built or something.

For those who want to know about the details of how the Monster was taken out:

[hide=]Monster is probably replaced by Doc Manhattan, or his abilities (which Veidt studies). You can see a blue energy field in the trailer similar to one that explodes out of Manhattan when he teleports.

And no Ratchet, the glowing blue genitalia shall be swinging in full view.[/hide]

Forgot about this thread.

2 more days \' I really wanna see it Friday (skip school maybz would be nais), but the problem is getting in. I don't wanna see it with my mom (sex/nudity) and my dad won't go. I'll probably go with my friend and his mom (cuz she already makes things sort weird in a funny way) - but I'll have to convince him to go on Friday.

IGN has two reviews already, Aussie review says 2/5 (bad char development) and British review says 5/5. So it looks like it can go either way. :-k

And btw, about the ending...

[hide=*SPOILER* WATCHMEN FILM ENDING *SPOILER*]Instead of Ozy making a squid alien and sending it to New York, he makes a machine that can sort of mimic Dr. Manhattan. He uses that to destroy every major city on the planet at once. This is because:

1. People will be all "wtf?" (I admit, I had no idea what was going on the first time I read it).

2. 9/11 - New York will get pissed.[/hide]

Well, it all depends on your kind of humour but over all the novel/movie is pretty serious. It basically deals with the moral issues related to superhero vigilantism. I'm really curious to see how they translate Rorschach and The Comedian to the movie though, I could see them chickening out on stuff like Rorschach's prison scenes and The Comedian's last actions in Vietnam.
