Username Hoggers

I remember someone bringing this topic up before on the official forums. Jagex said that it's not possible with the way their system is, and amoung that gave the reasons that if that account was banned, they would just come back (specifically talking about autoers). I will see if i can find something on it again.

Anything is possible, it just takes a lot of work to recode it.

And I highly doubt it's hard. The characters are probably just stored in a .dat (data) file. Just have it read through them all for the specific requirements, and delete them if they don't meet it.

Not that I agree with your terms of deleting accounts... But, I wouldn't mind if Jagex deleted some accounts (ones left on Tut Island for years...)

I also wouldn't mind if they gave us the chance to change our names  ! I hate mine :(

i dont like mine either :( anyway i dont know if you should delete usernames.

i think they should delete any character that hasn't logged on at all for an extended period of time honestly

And I really agree with deleting any character who hasn't completed the tutorial after 6 months

the only problem is that people would then probably take the characters, do the tutorial, and then never play them again I think at this point any character that has not been played in over a year should be wiped, regardless

Then, now that Jagex requires email for new characters, start sending out an email to anyone who hasn't played in 6 months telling them that if they have still not logged in within one week, the character will be deleted

I mean honestly what use does someone have for a character name if they never use the character unless they want to sell it later (which is against the rules of course)

If you want a cool username, make it the first time and continue to use it.

As far as changing your name, that wouldn't work as countless people would want to all the time. The neverending shift in used and unused usernames would likely cause some annoying [wagon] bugs. Like say for instance 2 players tried to get the same username at the same exact time. Would the program deny both, or accept both, or randomly choose which one gets it?

Then you have to consider the player's confusion with their friends changing their names and how you would make the friends list or ignore list work when those players did change their names. There are just waaaaaaay too many problems with that for jagex to ever let players do it.

Yea I wish they would purge all the unused accounts

It's tough at the top ;)

It's like real world trading, make it harder for people to hog usernames all they will do is put in a bit more effort and get them off tutorial island.

Arzian.png

You can't delete an account because he or she is inactive, f2p, or havent finished tutorial island.

If you can't think of a good username, that's your problem.

The only thing Jagex could add is a option to delete your account if you want to.

Ares_Artemis.png

I think an account that is registered but NEVER logged onto should be deleted after 6 months

One that logs on once or twice but never gets off tut island shuld have 6 months from log in date

One that gets off tutorial but hasn't done any quest etc should get a 1yr from last log on

One that has done A LOT should never be deleted

I agree, if the character hasn't even been off tutorial island/logged in in 6 months, it's pretty obvious they're not planning on playing. If someone really wants to reserve a name for some reason, get it off tutorial island  Honestly don't see why people would have a problem with this. Though, as pointed out above, from alot of your posts it seems like you're taking your own interpretation instead of reading the actual OP.

Stupid. Many people, including me, have quit for over 6 months. Plus, what happens to all the friends who have added me?

You fail at reading.

I was responding not to his original post, but to all of his posts since then implying that all the names after 6 months should be redone, given that virtually all of the good names are taken by quit\banned people who left tutorial island long ago.

Honestly, how many players quit before leaving tutorial island? Probably a miniscule amount compared to the thousands of inactive accounts currently existing. Most people at least get off the island before getting killed by a goblin outside of Lumby and quitting forever. I guess it would be alright to remove such accounts that never played after tutorial island, but it would not completely solve the problem of "username hoggers". The main amount of hoggers come from players who find a creative name and quickly seize th opportunity before its taken just for the satisfaction of an account with an awesome name. Another big portion of hoggers is players that actually played the game, made friends, gained 5 or 6 levels, got bored, and quit before experiencing the full game. For both cases, there isn't really a good solution that wouldn't cause chaos.

I'm always interested when the issue of changing your Runescape name comes up, as I truly loathe mine (especially as it is blocked in-game).

A quick note on deleting old usernames: In order to solve the problem of people creating a unique name and completing Tutorial Island just so they can keep the name (despite never intending to play any further than that), I suggest extending it to having below a certain Total Level (60 sounds reasonable), as well as having not played for 6 months/1 year.

Regarding the difficulty with lots of people changing their usernames more often than changing their underwear: Make the service similar to XboxLive's system for changing usernames. It currently costs around £10 ($17ish) to change your Gamertag. This service has been available to users for at least 4 months, and so far only 2 people on my friends list have taken the opportunity to change their Gamertag.

calvinandhobbessigedite.png

thinking up a unique name isnt that hard. it just takes a little creativity...

for instance to prove my point i just created an account half a stick :) so now its mine forever

Patents run out and have to be renewed

They don't correspond to runescape usernames anyway. They're the property of Jagex, and to be honest if you don't log in for an extended period of time and have never played on the character, jagex would be more than justified to delete your character. I'm actually not positive they don't do this actually. I once had an account named shrouded, and i remember the password. When i try to log on with it, it doesn't work though.

Ah, thanks for telling me that; it is one thing I did not know about patents.

I guess my example isn't justified then, and as I do not have a real-life situation to compare to, I find myself falling in favor of the pro-account deletion argument.

I do believe that under some circumstance an account should not be deleted, whether this is 1000 total or a week's total of login time.

Bongo <3:

by the sounds of that mod mmg quote your login rsn will be used for logging in and highscores etc but u will be able to have a different chat name.

The question arise doe this mean we culd have hundreds of "Zezima" running around in the chat etc

I'd agree with deleting a bunch of accounts that aren't used, but it'd be better to increase the lack of play to a year or more, and then have many messages on the rs main page warning of the imminent deletion, that they probably would have anyway.

copyofsigtuxtimenf0.png

I agree, there's loads of cool usernames that are taken but when you look them up in the highscores they aren't ranked in anything -.- the tutorial island judgement is good! Maybe activity of accounts can be taken into judgement rather than logging in due to people taking breaks etc.

avatar1rs8.jpg

As long as the account fits into all 3 categories, than I completely agree.

I doubt they'd let you have a display name that was someone else's username. There would be a lot of impersonation if they did and people could pretend to be other people and make them look bad, etc.
