raven_gaurd0
I honestly don't think that cold-turkey is right...if you can't work on nicotine patches, it's probably because you're mentally addicted to cigarrettes, too. Just the relaxation and ease that it brings. If you've got a heavy wallet, I'd go out and buy either pipe tobacco or cigars, which will drop the nicotine levels in your blood (at least, good stuff does) and make physical withdrawal less painful. Then throw that smoking routine, or just smoke less and less until you don't need it. Or, just moderate your cigarette usage and frequency until you don't automatically reach for one when you're stressed, 'cause it seems to me like you just need 'em when you're stressed out. I think you're well enough in the physical department, and if you're not, patches are always good.
sohkmj1
Whatever you do, don't try nicotine gum. You experience withdrawal because of the nicotine. It does nothing if you are gonna replace the source with another. You'll get addicted to the gum, which in the long run, is just as bad as drug abuse. Try this: it worked for say 6 months for my dad. Get someone you know (gotta be someone who sees you for at least 3-4 hours a day, spread out.) Tell him if he catches you smoking, you have to pay him cash (paying up is something people don't like to do, unless you're really filthy rich). Tim
You can delude yourself into thinking it will kill you if you put it into your lips. Just think of it as an equivalent to something very dangerous and lethal, and your fear of the dangerous thing will transfer over to the cigarette. Mind over matter. Sad enough thats the ONLY reason I haven't taken up smoking because of my immense stress levels. Take it one step at a time, dont dive straight in unless your ready for the immense draw-backs. Weed wise I dont even know how you lot get your hands on that crap to begin with? Its not like you can walk upto someone and go "Got Weed?" i_love_burritos
I'm thinking, chastity belt for the mouth. Except it wouldn't be called that. On a more relevant note, I'm not a smoker, but from TV ads, its bad for your health. :P Search online for a quitting hotline / helpline and see if patches work for you. blushenka
I'm trying to quit without any outside help. The only thing I've considered as an aid are nicotine patches or gum, but then I thought it would be silly to become addicted to those in turn. Anyway, it's not going very well. I keep re-lapsing. One notable side effect is that I want to eat more. And to the people who say 'bah, quitting is easy, nothing to it. Just do it (Nike!)', please do Truth a favour and shut up. You obviously never really smoked regularly: you're either social smokers or you smoke regularly but don't inhale. Of course that's not addictive, it's like sucking on a stick. Jesus, get a brain. Nicotine is highly addictive. If you don't believe me, check wikipedia, the all-reliable source for internet browsing folk! I've come to the conclusion that what you need is good motivation to quit. So yes, the money issue is a very good one (think of all the money you'd be saving if you quit), so is the health issue (like, if you go to a doctor and you're told that it's either quit smoking or become really ill, that'd be a good incentive to quit). Furah
Weed wise I dont even know how you lot get your hands on that crap to begin with? Its not like you can walk upto someone and go "Got Weed?" My friend got asked that. :wall: I'm not sure if it would be of much help, but find something that you cannot stand the taste of yet isn't harmful, preferably something that would stick to the end of a cig, and then only keep cigs with that stuff on it, whenever you go to smoke you'll experience the aweful taste and put it back. Hopefully you will be able to not ask others for a cig, or stop putting the stuff on them! Steam | PM me for BBM PIN Nine naked men is a technological achievement. Quote of 2013. Raven: Wouldn't buying Tobacco and smoking it in a pipe cause you to get addicted to the Tobacco rather then the Nicotine? :? Uhh yea you can. And tobacco isn't even noticeably addictive compared to nicotine. Pipe tobacco has nicotine in it anyway, it just has less. Quoi_Tu
In case it hasn't been mentioned, tell all your friends and family you're quitting and have them help you keep that promise. Also, if you find the habit part of smoking is getting to you, try toothpicks or cinnamon sticks. They help for some people. Beer
Lenticular_J
Ahh I love cinnamon sticks. To be honest, that's all I had to say. Sorry. Uh. Chew on a pipe. But don't put tobacco in. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream
Robert_Rdam
What I found out was, if you don't want to stop smoking, you'll find yourself smoking again in notime. Other people say chewing on a toothpick helps. I'm not buying that [cabbage], I say stop just stop without any help, or don't. Credits to Skully Sc for the signature. Tribal
Go to the local store, buy a bunch of different types of cigarettes. Newports, Salems, Marboloro, parliament etc. you get the idea. Then come home and boil them in a big pot of water. Strain out all of the leaves and then drink the water, you'll never smoke again.

Nicotine is in tobacco, A Tobacco plant is basically a nicotine plant... I like the suggestions guys I've not had a cigerette for a good 13 hours now. But I have real bad cravinsg at the moment so im trying my hardest to keep a cigerette away from my mouth. I don't like going cold turkey its hurting my stomach... Lenticular_J
Yep, it's gonna suck like hell for about two weeks. Even then you'll desperately want a cigarette. Some people just stop and never look back. Most, though, wish they could keep smoking. Also, massive amounts of nicotine are added to smokes. Really, a hand-rolled product is the best in terms of nicotine. But that may be a bit more expensive. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Lenticular_J
Oh, really? I didn't know if it was more difficult to find raw tobaccy. Although you can grow your own. I have a few plants, although I just grew them for fun. I haven't the foggiest how to turn them into something smokable. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream
Lateralus
I managed to quit for around two weeks cold turkey, for monetary reasons. I missed them like hell. I never really get bad cravings, but I couldn't sleep, couldn't write and just really wanted to smoke. I cracked at the two week mark because I really associated smoking with literature, and just wanted to sit and read and write and smoke furiously. I put an elastic band round my wrist and pinged it hard whenever I thought about smoking. La lune ne garde aucune rancune.

And there could be a little something to it, when I smoke I get more ideas, and better ones too. What are you writing btw, if you don't mind me asking? Also, that idea with the elastic band, I think I'll try it. Good old behaviourist punishment. "Metal isn't about violence or faggy whiny lyrics. If you can't kick it on your own maybe try a program like Smoke Enders. A friend of mine did that and it helped her a lot. She hasn't smoked in years. Good luck! IGoddessI
Well, I'm quitting smoking tommorow after smoking for 2 years, anybody quit smoking before and have some advice? (Non of that chewing-gum/patchs stuff becuase they don't work for me) Thanks! I used to smoke 16's (Rothman's - It's a New Zealand cigarette and bloody expensive :wall:) and was a very heavy smoker for a few years. This is how I quit: 1. Smoke a brand you hate - I was very used to these fine cigarettes and when I got home I had no money so was forced to smoke the cheapest brand. It tasted so horrible that I thought twice before I lit one up and over time I no longer wanted to smoke. 2. Write down the situations you'd find yourself wanting a cigarette. Usually drinking is a good one, so avoid situations where you drink a lot. When you drink alcohol the nicotine receptors are blocked and so your brain perceives that it hasn't had enough nicotine/ therefore craves more nicotine/ therefore you go through more cigarettes. Or even social contexts, perhaps you smoke more around certain friends etc, so what can you do instead of it? 3. Lollies - Prepare yourself for weight gain if you choose this option but it does work. When you feel like a cigarette reach for a lolly or a lolly pop, suck on that. 4. Don't hang around smokers. Fact - If you live in a house full of smokers and you're trying to give up (in particular husband and wife) you have a higher percentage of failing because you're not doing it together. It's the same as dieting, if you want to lose weight, do it with the person you live with and do it together. Good luck quitting smoking! I put an elastic band round my wrist and pinged it hard whenever I thought about smoking. Interesting, they actually recommend this in youth groups for self harmers :P The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours. Just because you have trouble quitting, it doesn't mean everyone who says it's easy are "obviously not true smokers". Some people just have a harder time than others. I agree that they shouldn't be making fun of people who can't quit, but that certainly doesn't mean that they must not have any real experience. GGunitfan10
I used to smoke for like a month but I quit. I'm not really addicted to anything except scape. Weird. I'm proud to have quit rs, it was extremely hard. As for cigarettes, its just a matter of not putting a cigarette in your mouth and lighting it, JUST DON'T. Well quitting runescape wasn't really a choice for me. All of the sudden I just stopped playing and started playing xbox more. I haven't logged on rs since like December 26th? Or something. Its pretty nice. I get wondering about becoming a member again, but that is something I should never ever do again. I almost failed 6th grade because of rs. So Just try to keep yourself busy with other things.
Trip
miokie, if you really want to quit you should look into a prescription medicine called Chantix/Champix http://www.chantix.com/. The success rates are incredible (this coming from GPs not biased advertising sites), side effects are minimal and it can even be covered by insurance. As far as i know it works by blocking the nicotine receptors in your brain, making the smoking of a cigarette for chemical reasons pointless. It's worked for a couple of my friends, i would use it but i dont think i want to quit enough quite yet. Good luck with quitting, it will be hell.
