VOV
It is ridiculous, I have to take public transportation to school from now on because I can't afford to pay both my insurance and these gas prices on my current salary  Two years ago, when I got my license gas was 58 cents a litre, now it is over a dollar :? I know the price. I pay it gladly.

Shadd
We had a discussion about gas prices and how Hurricane Katrina has something to do with, how? I don't know how, ask Bush. :| Everything we do seems like it affects gas prices in the U.S. Anyway, In North Carolina we have a shortage of gas in some of the counties because the gas trucks pass them to go help the hurricane victims. My teacher predicts that maybe we will go without gas for a few days and without gas that means no school. This is ridiculous in my opinion, and it's all being recorded as history in which our childrens children will read about. If anything about the hurricane victims Bush has his part in the gas prices he should lower it and their are solutions, what is he doing?

insane
The irony of this, is that with the damage hurricane Katrina caused - nothing should affect gas prices until about a month from now. They just raised prices in anticipation of petrol going up in price in a month. The funny thing is, when the refineries down south start functioning again, I really really doubt that they'll lower prices in anticipation of petrol going down :P likely they'll say that they have to wait until it gets cheaper - so they'll get an extra month of huge profit in. And for the Europeans telling us not to complain - first, I'm not complaining :P and second, I believe that Canadian cities are a bit further apart from Euro cities. In fact, I need to drive 25-30km one way to get to most of my friend's houses ;). And I live in one of the most densely populated areas in Canada as well :|. Evil_Elf
I think we can whine actually. We've never had prices this high, its a big change, while you Europeans seem to not know anything other than expensive gas. Do you really think we really had the prices this high to begin with? :? Well someone said something like we've had prices like this for a donkey's amount of years, I figured that meant decades. And I just mean more expensive in general, I'm sure you haven't had 6.50 per gallon for years.

ShakaKhan70
If anything about the hurricane victims Bush has his part in the gas prices he should lower it and their are solutions, what is he doing? Bush can't just turn a dial and lower gas prices, he has already released our national oil reserve, and thats about the most direct thing he can do to help them. The government can't just change prices of things willy nilly becuase our economy is based on capitalism, not communism. And I also don't think Bush is just sitting there in his office, reclining in his chair with his feet up on the desk, saying "eh, this problem will fix itself if I just leave it" he's doing the best he can to find the solutions and solve the problems, nothing is simple when you are dealing with several nations of millions of people. Peter
What a horrible time to start driving. I can actually remember when gas was $.96 a gallon. Just goes to show how quickly the prices have risen in the past, maybe five or six years. I know I'm in no position to complain, but my parents decided that I should pay for my own gas to drive my sister and I to school daily. The disadvantage of having one of those hybrids (such as the Lexus 400h) is that they charge about $6,000 more so that it's hybrid. That's a long time until you've saved in gas. Where I live is a bit higher than the rest of the country, and certainly the highest in the state. This county, per capita, has the highest amount of SUVs, which characteristically get the worst gas mileage. Oh well, I don't drive one.
dusqi
There's nothing like high prices to get people to change the way they live. In the long run this will help everyone. America will find other ways to get around that use less fuel (technological solutions, public transportation, walking???) and thus reduce its dependence on unstable middle eastern countries, and it'll do the environment some good also. indy500fan
theres a good way to get prices of gas to lower drasticly in the very long run, raise them a lot right now. if it gets raised to the point people cant afford it anymore, then alternate modes of transportation (hydrogen powered cars and the like) will be common, then eventually everyone will have one, and gas wont be worth anything anymore. problem with all that is owners of the gas companies know that, so they wont ever raise the gas too high. anyways, i am buying gas everyother day right now, i only see it increasing for a while. figure if i get it today it will be cheaper than tommorow. electricity costs are kinda high right now too, im trying to get my parents to buy some solar panels and wind power to save some money in the long run. a very general estimate is they pay off between 2-5 years, so its not that bad of an idea. some of the early solar panels are still around after 25 years, and since there arent any moving parts they stay for a long time. anyways im rambling...
Phil
Ahh but the powerfull people that control the prices of oil/gas/petrol still like to rake the money in. They aren't going to put them so high as to scare people off. I have also heard that they have been making sure that other, more environmentally friendly ways are not developed so fast at the moment because they don't want to lose their profits just yet. Once they realise that there isn't enough oil in the world to keep producing the gas/petrol they will then venture into those economically/environmentally friendly solutions to energy. xyrec
Well I'm glad to see I got some responses, usually no one responds to my posts:-P However it costs me over ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã40!! Thats $73 to fill up my tank from empty to full. Thats approx ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã4 ($7.30) a gallon. I really wish you Americans would stop boo hooing about the price of your petrol because you pay next to nothing compared to us Brits. I dunno how the US economic situation compares to britain but just because you guys pay more for gas there doesn't mean you're in worse shape. Minimum wage here is like 5.10 an hour, most grocery stores like walmart, krogers and meijers all pay less than 8.00 per hour for all starting positions. As far as i know meijers pays the same as they did before and when I worked there I started at 5.75 an hour as a bagger and cashiers started at 6.45. Some people work at meijers full time and that's their only income. Not to mention american cars have never been known for their great gas mileage. For people who are working 45 hours a week at only 8 dollars an hour they're getting a measly 380 a week with a third of that taken out for taxes, an extra dollar or more per gallon of gas means a lot. The price of everything has gone up for years now with the average income in this country staying around the same. When my dad was my age he bought a brand new harley davidson motorcycle(a smaller one) for a few hundred bucks, a new sports car was usually well under 5000 bucks, perhaps under 3000 depending on the car. His first job started at like 1.75 an hour. My first job started at 5.75 an hour just 3 years back. That's not a big increase considering that a new harley(even the cheapest ones) are over 6000 and even the cheapest of new cars are between 6000 and 13000 bucks and if you want a sports car, prepare to pay over 20,000. 92p ish for a litre of diesel here in leeds. Pretty expensive but my dad's car does on average 35mpg which isn't too bad. I think the problem with hydrogen fuel cell cars are the emmisions, water vapour, which actually is a major pollutant due to the fact that the more water vapour in the air, the more humidity and higher temperatures. That's a rough and brief explanation. I wouldn't consider water to be a major pollutant.....it might put more water vapor into the air but I'm fairly certain it'd be a managable amount and far less harmful than fumes created by burning hydrocarbons. As I said though, they have working hydrogen fuel cell cars that recycle the water instead of discharging it as exhaust and just seperate it back into oxygen and hydrogen, then recombine it in the original process. You could use water for fuel instead of having to have oxygen and hydrogen seperated and stored.
trapical
I may be shot for saying this, but I somewhat welcome higher gas prices. Yes it's horribe for global commerence but I am sick and tired of seeing morons in my nieghborhood driving a F-350 truck to school everyday, a truck meant for hauling like 50 tons uphill... in rain; and they use it to drive one person 10 miles. The best part is then those same people make fun of small 'wimpy' cars like my Beetle and brag about how big their trucks are. Oh and to top it off, if one of those millions of truck owners get into an accident with my fuel efficiant, practical car I will most likly die. Fantastic. Enjoying the 12 MPG you're getting now? I hope so.

Once they realise that there isn't enough oil in the world to keep producing the gas/petrol they will then venture into those economically/environmentally friendly solutions to energy. They've been doing what they do for a long time and they know how to do it. Some of the "gas shortages" in this country were totally man made. There was no shortage, it was just politics from what I've heard. They know how high they can raise it without passing the breaking point where most people just won't be able to afford to drive anymore. That and like someone said earlier, they raise the price sky high, then drop it again to a price that's only slightly higher than it was to start and people relax and go back to buying gas because it seems like they're saving a ton when in reality the prices are sitll up. Of course they do their best to squelch alternatives. They wanna ride this wave of profits until the very end. Sadly though when the oil industry collapses it won't be the board of directors at exxon that's suffering, it'll be all the employees who will be out of work that will suffer. The higher-ups can just cash in their chips and go invest their money in new sources of energy and ride the new wave of profit. They've proven the usefulness of ethanol ages ago but has anything ever come of it? Not much, although most brits probably don't realize it but your gas there isn't all petroleum, they mix it with ethanol and other things to give it a higher octane rating and reduce the amount of actual gasoline they use. It also raises their profit margain. They wouldn't use ethanol in top fuel dragsters if it was a weak fuel, it has a higher octane rating than gas for crying out loud. The only problem is that ethanol burns slower and so it runs better in engines that have a long stroke. Sadly most cars we americans drive have these little 4 cylinder engines with duel overhead cam and a million valves per cyclinder that make all their power at high rpms and have to move the fuel through real fast to get those rpms. Currently in the US all the major car manufacturers make cars that can run on at least a percentage of ethanol in the fuel and work at 100% efficiency. Many will run on 75% ethanol. All of them could run on 100% ethanol but some vehicles arn't as efficient with ethanol or potentially deteriorate faster because gas has a slight lubricant property so it helps to keep the pistons and everything lubricated at high rpms wheras ethanol doesn't. But still, ethanol could be used and it wouldn't take a huge amount of effort on the part of the car makers to develop cars that work perfectly with all ethanol fuel. Who knows, they may be able to blend ethanol with lubricants to alleviate any worries of accelerated wear and tear. RISE RISE RISE!!!!!! GET ON YOUR BIKES! DITCH THE CARS $0 PER GALLON BIKES > CARS im glad gas prices are drastically rising, sickening seeing so many ignorant people driving their SUVs around all the time. disgusting. people need to ride bikes more, less pollution, more healthier allternatives. get on a bike today Some people need to drive 40 miles to work. Then you work barely enought to not get fired. People do need to ride bikes or run more but it's just not a practical means of transportation for most. If anything it's just excercise to keep in shape. If you work in an office you really think you could ride a bike in a suit and look presentable by the time you make it to work? What if it rains when you need to get to work? SUV's have their purpose but americans drive tons of them, getting in some cases less than 10 miles per gallon. My dad had a mobile welding business for a while and required huge trucks to haul around the gear. One of them got like 4-6 miles per gallon. Gas prices were way less then too or his business would've really been hurting(he went out of business anyway). Ford and GM are paying the price for it too because people are buying suv's less and less because of rising gas prices and they've both suffered huge loses this year. A friend of mine was at a plant where they build some vehicles and he watched them crushing brand new F-150 trucks and harley davidson motorcycles. They weren't selling them and if they crush em they can take it as a full tax write off for the full value of the vehicle.
