F2P, is it becoming P2P?

Featured Replies

Okay, so I've read the first article of this weeks Tip.It times, and finally decided to write my opinions about an issue that seems to be coming up a lot. There are many threads on RSOF (yes I have been there the last couple of days) with tons of F2P'ers asking for all of the member's benefits, and now with all of this new stuff from the new CEO, they have an ego and some have said "F2P is the real game, give us the real benefits". Some are even bold enough to say "We pay more with ads than you do with subscriptions". Even some are going as "We work harder, we deserve more!"

Now, I am all for F2P getting new features. Hell, they could use a new quest, they've had the same ones for years on end. But going through RSOF, I notice a lot of discussion about skill capes going to F2P, them getting some of our skills, or demanding new areas or the areas the us paying members get. These threads get lots of discussion from the recently-able-to-post F2P'ers with over 12.5 million experience, all supporting it. Thats one of the first things they've gotten that was once exclusively ours, by the way, even if it is limited access.

The real problem I see with all of those discussions is that there are some J-Mods all agreeing that they should get it! There were discussions in Clan Chats (as someone on RSOF posted, but I'm not so sure if it's true) that Andrew was going to give access to skill capes to the F2P'ers. In all honesty that was a reason to join members, was to get the advantage of showing off your cape. Some of them argue that people ONLY get a 99 skill to show off that they have members status, and even argue "We work harder to get a 99 skill, we deserve the cape more than P2P do!" (not necessarily with grammar as good as that). However, they know that it is going to be harder for them to get the mastered skill, and know that they won't get anything to show for it (unless it is a combat stat, where they will have the combat level), so if all they want is to show, then isn't it in a way hypocritical to say we only got it to show off? And are they going to get Agility as was also said by another?

Another thing was them taking away the Agility features in F2P from P2P. I'm sure this has been said a million times, but in the K-Base on the Runescape site it said that our run-recharge rate with Agility would remain on F2P servers, but they took that away because "it gave an unfair advantage to the F2P'ers".

Finally, in all honesty in the past year or two F2P has been getting tons of decent updates, i.e. getting access to the Duel Arena (formerly P2P, but they don't have tournaments), Bounty Hunter (I think this was in the last year or two?), the Bounty Hunter update, PvP worlds, the PvP artifact thing, and I'm sure there are more, but off of a 6+ month hiatus I didn't feel like digging through all of the news updates. And guess what? Though P2P got all of that (as it is free content that we get with P2P), mostly all that P2P got was quests.

So, I'd now like ask, what are your thoughts? Do you think that P2P is being pushed aside by F2P?

Also, here is a thread on RSOF that was created by a P2P user, which is similar to this, but is only at 20 pages, with no J-Mod posts (yet). Quick-find code: 129-130-945-58978924

EDIT: And one final thing, at this rate I doubt that Mobilizing Armies will be only for P2P :S

Generally, what Free2Play users are confused of, is the actual point of a payed subscription. What I mean is, by subscribing to a membership on Runescape, this is what you're basically agreeing to: I *Insert name* hereby agree to pay Jagex Ltd. in the amount of X, for added services and features rendered by the said company under Y agreement, for Z amount of time. So, let's break it down now; A member is paying $5.95 USD per month (under a credit card agreement, that is), in order to use the added Runescape membership features for one month. This is what separates p2p, from f2p. Now, here's where free players don't understand. By choosing to play f2p, and pay for nothing, you agree that member-exclusive features will NOT be rendered to the player, and you completely understand this, you're supposed to read the user agreement page, you know. So, again, in simple terminology, you agree, when you make your player, that by law: If you don't pay, you don't get skillcapes, new skills, new area's. You simply agreed to play the f2p game, and nothing more. Whereas p2p players, pay for these things deliberately. You can plead to Jagex, and make as many threads as you want, or have the entirety of RS supporting, Jagex is not obligated to listen to you. YOU made the choice, YOU chose your own consequences, this is no one's fault but the individual's.

Thats basically what I say when I hear the "We work harder", "We deserve it"; but I was a little mad when I started hearing rumors of them getting some of our features (like Duel Arena and possibly now Skillcapes)

I am a f2p player myself, and I don't think f2p is really pushing aside p2p. F2p players will never get more updates than p2p, and Jagex is smart enough not to release an update for f2p without a bigger one for p2p so it overshadows the f2p update.

I am quite shocked at the rudeness and "bossiness" of those f2p players in the RSOF. They don't pay, so they won't get as much updates as p2pers. They have to learn to accept that. If they want more updates, they'll have to get membership.

I personally think f2p should get mostly balancing updates.

Things to make it balanced, like balancing the combat triangle in particular, but most "new" content should go to the members.

O.O

Wow I actually forgot the duel arena was once members only.

I don't think F2P would ever get P2P skills but they could definately get areas, monsters, items and minigames that are currently P2P. But by the time that happens we'll have new P2P stuff so we won't even care.

It's a win/win situation for P2P and F2P tbh.

And this is exactly what Jagex is doing.

They're not stupid, despite all the (more stupid) idiots in the RSOF calling them stupid fools. They won't release f2p updates without a bigger, more overshadowing p2p update. And yet, there will still be selfish p2p snobs who can't give a single [insert very small particle here] of updates to f2p.

Me too. F2P magic is currently so underpowered that I really won't expect anybody, even with amazingly low IQ to create a rant about f2p mage being overpowered. Though recently there was an idiot who created such a rant... That really made me roll on the floor and laugh.

Is P2P being pushed aside by F2P? Simply put, no. Members will always take the priority updates. Of course, giving them Members-only monsters (like the hellhound) isn't so bad, and nor is opening up the whole Northern Wilderness, and it isn't like Members are losing anything if F2P gets an update - we could still use it, too.

Just remember - not everyone that posts on the RSOF demanding these changes are 100% F2P - they might be ex-Members, too.

F2P will always want more, more more. They're not going to get it. While they might get an update once in a while, they won't get near as much as members. Jagex will not want to give up on all the money they get from membership.

I wouldn't be complaining if they did. It would mean I could play RS without paying :D

Once again, human greed is unbelievable. :?

Maybe I should quote myself...

Anyway, I don't find it fair to stereotype all f2pers as beggars and noobs who continuously beg for more and more. Excuse the blatant self promotion, but I don't beg for updates to f2p.

F2P will, over the course of time, always want more. It is human nature to always want more for the same price. Wether it be members wanting EVEN MORE! updates, then it be F2P wanting.. A.. update.

F2P is currently getting the 'left-overs' from the P2P system. Like anyone cares about a hellhound going F2P. It's not like its a good training spot or anything.

F2P got some dungeon updates with a few monsters.. woohoo? Last time I checked members got +15 minigames, currently more quests then most people can handle. We got boss-monsters, ranging from KBD to Corporal beast.

In my opinion, the most exciting things are still members. Pking in F2P isn't worth jack, because well.. how strong is a rune scitimar really? Magic dangerous? not by a long shot in F2P. Those leftovers we don't use like the party-room or.. a hellhound. They can have them for all I care. Keeps them pleased, keeps them happy, keeps them farming for our (members) materials we use for training our skills faster. Seriously, how many options do F2P really have?

F2P'ers get almost meaningless expensions, the end-result will always be the same. They are limited in what they can do and what they can get by it. The best drop reward is a rune scitimar, the best minigame reward are .. fist of guthix gear?

I joined members and got better things within 2 days and forgot all about F2P. They can have our junk to keep them happy.

The only real point I have against them gaining updates, if its an update that is highly respected in P2P. Like skill-capes and their respective emotes. Getting a hitpoint-cape is quite impressive. Even untrimmed, they belong to the top capes. Trimmed capes, hugely impressive! Great stats to. Now this isn't junk at all! Keep it exclusivly to people who pay for it.

Minigames like Castlewars are highly respected in P2P, same principal applies. For something like a monster, no problem, if it is a normal training monster. Not a bossmonster

People still pay castle wars  why bother? playing 20 min games to look like a noob, when you could be playing for exp, in a much more fun game?

Skill capes have never been impressive to me cos theres so many of them around and so what you got 99, I think its a bit sad you want to brag about it to be honest. Example: "Well done you burnt 100k logs, way to go champ ....." Its not like its hard work, a bit boring and a sore wrist but you dont feel tired from it.

Sure if I got 99 wc Im going to wear the cape but only when im cutting (mainly so I dont get asked wc lvl?) the rest of the time I will just wear an obby cape.

I dont think 99 hp is impressive cos I highly doubt any body goes out thinking "im going to train hp." They go for drops or att, str or def levels.

Hp levels seem to just happen, I bet 80% of runescape players are always a little bit surprised when they get a hp level.

On topic: dispite all the poeple using the dramtic "if they get this small members item then what next god swords? Or to go to GWD? Or barrows?" No, it means they are now SHARING a small piece of the huge amount of members content.

Jagex isnt stupid enough to open up the entire members content to f2p and expect us to carry on paying.

There is always going to be a huge diffrence between f2p and p2p in the amount of content each gets, some times I forget even the most simple things arnt f2p (I got a few poisoned addy darts and for some reason logged into a f2p world when I tried to put them on the g.e ... obviously, it failed #-o )

Castle wars is much funner than any other minigame i can think of.

Soul wars is stupid, hey look my team has the obby, instant win.

This. Only a n00b would think that f2p "deserves" any updates. But you'd have to be just as n00by to think that f2p is going to overrun or otherwise ruin p2p in any way. Members who accuse free players of being undeserving of any updates are themselves at fault for being spiteful and whiny. It doesn't affect them a whit if some minor feature they never use becomes available in free worlds.

Also:

Sure if I got 99 wc Im going to wear the cape but only when im cutting (mainly so I dont get asked wc lvl?) the rest of the time I will just wear an obby cape.
You wouldn't believe how many times I've been asked wc lvl? while wearing my woodcutting cape.

Funner?

castle wars is great ... I would play for hours on end, the game objective is one of my favs (capture the flag) but the rewards are crap, the best armour costs 2900 tickets ... thats 1450 wins and its bright yellow and black, it looks really nooby.

Soul wars I find more fun, theres more to do and the only time a win is guranteed is when 1 team owns both grave yards and the obby. I've been in plenty of games were the obby has changed hands 5+ times and not 1 avatar kill ... other times its 1 team controlling the obby and they get 1 avatar kill with 2 mins left.

most people in castle wars either glory hunt by running at the flag, randomly attack enemys, stand around alching, stand around there own flag or mess about with the catapult. If your a low level you cant hit any body so you end up running round doing sweet f.a to help your team.

In soul wars you can still randomly attack people but it serves less of a purpose, if your a lower level you can still do something, tehre is no way to glory hunt cos if you run at the obby alone your going down ... if you run at the avatar your going down AKA its more of a team game.

If one team has tactics and the other team is just a group of people who dont know each other who do you think will win? Thats why clans dominate it.

Castle wars theres no need for tactics.

Most people agree with me, just look at the numbers of poeple who play cw compared to those who play sw.

perfetc_666.png

IM GOING TO LIVE FOREVER .......... or die trying

People play SW for the rewards.

If they had the same rewards, I'm sure it would be relatively even.

Most people in soul wars just run at the obby, or kill the slayer monsters all day for XP.

Theres no need for tactics in soul wars or castle wars.

Castle wars.

Charge at anyone who enters your base, let the higher levels deal with flag. Lower levels can always help with bandages, catapults, or just attacking, they still do damage if they use mage or something.

Soul wars.

Charge at obby, cause thats how you roll. Let the higher levels deal with avatar.

The only reason i used to like soul wars more than castle wars was because of grave rushes, but of course that kinda went with the progress bar.

O.O

Your right back on topic we go.

Saying f2p is becoming p2p is like saying africa is becoming like the america cos there getting clean water and food.

American's are always going to be able to eat themselvs into immobility and african's are always going to die of starvation. Members are always going to have more content then f2p, there never even going to come close to the amount of content members have.

perfetc_666.png

IM GOING TO LIVE FOREVER .......... or die trying

Lets Keep it simple. F2P want updates because they feel they contribute to Jagex more than P2P which is an obvious lie, and the P2P agreement is plain and obvious, you want to play the whole game, than you must pay. Runescape F2P is simply put, a nonending DEMO. and they should be thankful for that!

Thinking that P2Pers that are honestly offended by giving F2Pers skill capes is a lie too, the only problem I see with it is the economic effects its having on the economy today (excluding clans)

P2P will always take priority over F2P including updates for new monsters, armor or areas.

F2P will never recieve P2P skills, and most (99%) of P2P areas will remain such unless it stands to benefit the whole group if it is F2P. like the Duel Arena or Runecrating guild. speaking as a P2Per as much as i hate giving stuff over to the F2Pers, I understand that Jagex feels the need to satisfy F2Pers every once in a while to keep them interested.

Infact there are a couple areas I wouldnt mind being turned over to F2P like the mage training arena, and games room (dont give away burthrope though) which unfortunatly isn't very popular in P2P. No F2P is not overshadowing P2P, and any balancing effects made in F2P will help to improve P2P, so I don't see any problem.

No not all F2Pers are beggers, and not all P2Pers are greedy update-holders

but unfortunatly that minority of F2Pers that build the sterotype must learn to shut it and enjoy the game for what they have. if it was any other online multiplalyer they would only have access to a 2 week (at most) trial and than have to buy the game.

Count your blessings ::'
