Nearly finished

The development of the dwarf quest is nearly finished. Its been nearly finished for the last couple of weeks. Nearly finished can be quite a drawn-out stage sometimes, and thats definitely been the case with this project.

In the last blog, Mod Mark talked about how hed played through the quest in its rough-and-ready state with placeholder graphics, and said he had some changes he wanted me to make. Ive made those changes, and I agree with him that the plot revelation works better now. Apart from that, Ive spent my time polishing every detail of the quest, to take it from the just-about-working version that Mod Mark played, to a piece of content wed be happy releasing to you.

This polishing stage is a quite different kind of job from starting to write the quest. Its as if the project disintegrates from one big job into lots of little jobs - this NPC doesnt have chat written if you talk to her at one particular quest stage; that puzzle will get stuck if you teleport out at the wrong stage; the timings in a cutscene dont quite line up - and so forth.

Blue blocks begone

Before and after

Before and after

One of my tasks has been to replace the placeholder graphics with the final graphics as the Graphics team create them. You remember the screenshot I showed you a while back of a new area made up of blue blocks? Well, here's what it looks like now...

Adding the graphics is sometimes a simple swap, but other times it involves major changes to the code. For example, the basic layout of the area in the screenshot is the same, but the exact proportions are slightly different from what I mapped down, which means the code for the action that takes place there had to be changed slightly. At other times, the graphics might not be quite what Id wanted, or might not work properly with the code, so Ive had to get them changed. Theres a lot of back-and-forth between Content and Graphics at this stage of a project.

What happens next

When I say the project is nearly finished, thats nearly finished as far as this project stage is concerned; that doesnt mean its about to be released. Once Ive got the whole quest working without any bugs Im aware of, the project will go into the QA stage. That means the QA team will find the bugs I wasnt aware of and send them to me to fix. Im expecting to be able to send this quest to QA within the next couple of days.

Another thing happening now is that the quests text goes into editing (to catch any spelling and grammar errors and make sure all text is in the house style), and translation. Thats actually already started - so if I change any text now I have to send a note to the editor so he can look at it again.

Finally, its at this stage in a project that we start thinking about any extra website features that well release along with it. Weve decided that for this quest well be doing a new Lores and Histories story to be released at around the same time. Writing that is my next task once the quest goes into QA.

We have a title

Back in one of my early blogs for this project I told you how the quest didnt have a title yet, because Im rubbish at coming up with titles. Well, at this stage of a project we really need the final title to be defined, so Ive racked my brains and come up with the following: Forgiveness of a Chaos Dwarf.

A nice, intriguing title, I think. It tells you that at least one chaos dwarf is involved, but who is it forgiving and why? You will just have to wait and see.

Nearly finished...isn't that every update? -.- Oh well, nothing really too interesting. Possibly one of the lamest dd's for me in interest.

A reflection is just a distorted reality held by glass and your mind.

Nice, I hope a lot of Mining will be involved in this storyline, just to hear those thousands of people whine who've been ignoring Mining for years !

Due to my epic stats, I have now started WGS (but I still hate spoilers).

Nooo, I don't want a new dwarf quest! I like the story line and stuff but it will probably have a too high mining requirement so I can't do it. :x

ohh well, We'll just have to wait and see how things unpack.

Level 61 Hunter

Level 61 Firemaking

Level 69 Strength

Must have completed Forgettable Tale of a Drunken Dwarf and Between a Rock...

There will be an enemy to fight, but we haven't quite decided its level yet.

This was said in the previous blog.

Good read, seems that their development process for each quest is very long. If this is the same for PKing changes and so on, some of the Developers must be annoyed their work gets removed.

I'd prefer a dragon warhammer actually. Ever since the story of the dragonkins, I've found it weird that dragon hachets were part of the weaponary made by them. Why would dragonkinds make tools like pickaxes anyway? If every runite item has to have a dragon counterpart, dragon nails would be....Nevermind. :-#

Mobilising Armies was "nearly finished" for like 3 months.

Well, I believe since the last dwarf quest was released, we've had the entire goblin quest series from start to finish. How many years has it been? I'll take a "nearly finished" for now. Of course, that could mean days, weeks, sometime this year, some next year. Let's hope sooner than later.

I'm willing to bet that the reward will just be a lot of exp, the bulk of which will be strength.

If the CORPORAL beast is this hard, imagine how hard a GENERAL or COLONEL beast would be. a corporal is not even an admirable rank in armies that use that ranking system.

Yeah, it is a pking minigame, so any arguments anybody makes will probably be biased.

The best way this will end :Everybody just says,"I'm not arguing with you anymore, goodbye."

The worst way this will end: I don't really know, psychological warfare? Worldwide thermonuclear war? Pie eating contest?
