What movie(s) did you last see?

Ben X - The Belgian contribution to the Oscars won several prizes so far. As a film-loving Belgian I had to see it, obviously. I left the theatre with mixed feelings. The story is about an adolescent with the Asperger syndrome (autism) who is bullied to death at school. He relishes the (ir)reality of computer games. On the one hand it's a very pure, beautifully shot film which really touched me. On the other hand, I'm averse to films that slap you around with moral intentions. Still, its naÃÆÃâÃâïve idealism and beauty (many many quoteworthy lines) are so disarming that even the harshest cynic must be touched in some way. I also loved the overlap between reality/images from computer games.

Such a pity generations of adolescents will be forced to watch this film at school.

I think I'm in love. I've seen Days of Heaven again. And it really is true love. It was even better the second time. It has that special thing. Just like Sunrise, Banshun, Werckmeister Harmoniak, Nobi, Zerkalo, Once Upon a Time in the West, Nattvardgasterna, Francesco Giullare di Dio and all those others. Must see.

Yesterday I also saw The Night of the Iguana wich was as expected very good. Not as good as Under the Volcano though, but still exceptionally well made. Everything on location and so. I'm rediscovering John Huston.

Tonight I went to friends and saw You, me and Dupree again. And I must say that I loved it the second time as well. It really is a fantastic movie. Such great laughs, and a tear at the end. A Hollywood classic already, now if only more people realized it at this point in time.

The Day After Tomorrow - You can get plenty of laughs out of this movie. Most of it isn't supposed to be funny, but it is. The global warming chasing them down a hallway was hilarious.

The Prestige - Good the second time through also. This time I knew what was going on from the beginning, so it was almost like seeing a different movie. Pretty good.

"Robot Chicken" season 1 - Well this is a different show. Sometimes funny, sometimes kind of lame. The humour relies on the viewer having some knowledge of the pop culture references. Mostly I knew them so that was OK.

Great film, it's such a shame that Malick took so long to return to film making. He's a great directer.

Yea, he's one of the best. It's such a shame that something like The New World was so poorly marketed, and that he isn't very productive, but maybe then his movies wouldn't be so good. Good that's he working on something though.

"Robot Chicken" season 2, 3 - Season 3 isn't over quite yet but I got caught up to last weeks episode. Also watched the Star Wars special. Still really funny, it seems like the small 2 seconds shots are the ones that get me laughing the hardest. They are all usually good though, and always pay off in the end.

Equilibrium - Well that was awesome. Can't believe I haven't seen this one before. Christian Bale was perfect for his part. Nice action movie, for the most part. Some of it was cheesy.

"The IT Crowd" season 1 - Don't care for laugh tracks, but other than that the show is really funny.

I watched that one at the cinema a few years back. Very Matrix like in style. I thought the style of the movie was awesome, and I love the premise. Christian Bale is definately one of my fav' actors now.

Bringing up Baby - This film is at first glance a bit difficult to get into. The first half hour, it's hard to get into the rhythm and the cutting seems to be a bit off. Once you're in the flow, however, hilarity abounds. It's been ages since I laughed so hard. I actually snorted loudly in the cinema, to my horror and shame (and the amusement of the other viewers). A must see, don't give up on it but watch till the end.

The Spirit of St. Louis - An epic by Billy Wilder. De wonderen zijn de wereld nog niet uit. It's a bit of a weird thing really. I enjoyed watching it, and I thought Stewart gave a good preformance. But it wasn't what I expected it to be. I hoped for some more Wilder, so I guess that in that way I'm a bit dissapointed. Still worth watching though. Especially if you enjoy movies like The Shawshank Redemption.

The Stratton Story Yea, uh. Nice, I guess. It's a bit sweet, sometimes you feel a bit like an idiot, nearly 60 years after it's made, but alright. I kind of got trough it on the automatic pilot. It didn't do much to me, but I kept watching and at the end of the movie I decided it was okay. Inspirational for hard-core Disney freaks maybe, but not for me. I haven't got anything better to say, sorry.

Oh, Sumpta, you've seen it in cinema? Cool. Snorting isn't that bad though. Giving tears during The Apartment when you're the only 20er in cinema next to all those 65+ people is even stranger. :P Especially when it doesn't do them anything. :D

Yes, next week I'm gonna see Shop around the corner. Cinema Zed (http://www.cinemazed.be) in Leuven is having a classic comedies festival "Laughing Matters". I've seen most films of the play list already, but still: whee! I also saw The General there with live piano music. The cinema can host no more than 30 or 40 people, it's quite nice but snort and everyone has heard it .

I also cried when I saw the Apartment. I was completely gutted, I hadn't expected so raw a film when I sat down to see it, I had expected something more along the lines of Some Like it Hot. Brilliant, though.

Yea, it's quiete rough at some points. I love it when they're showing those classics again. December is going to be a wonderfull month. First I'm going to Delft, because they're showing Murnau's Nosferatu with live piano music. And two weeks alter....Billy Wilder's WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION in cinema. *dances*

Oh, and it's fantastic that you're going to see Lubtisch in cinema. I'm still sad that I couldn't go see Ninotchka in cinema, when it played two months ago. :x

Die Hard 4.0

Who said fourth time round ruins the trilogy? One of the best films I've seen this year, so what if the plot was fairly unbelievable and the stunts were a bit crazy, it was fantastic action movie fun, the way Hollywood should make 'em.

My friends had really raved about this, don't know if it was that brilliant, but still very good. The set piece battles were superb and Gerard Butler was fantastic as King Leodonis.

"The IT Crowd" season 2 - This show is absolutely hilarious. Season 2 ending not as great as season 1, but the whole season was just as good.

It does have an awesome style to it, as well as a pretty interesting story. Christian Bale was perfect for that part, he can pull of the "no feelings" look really well. His partner (the black guy) didn't do it well at all, a few times it was really obvious also. Don't know why they let that slide. Some of it was how it was written though, I guess. I did really enjoy it though, which led me to check out:

Ultraviolet - There is a reason this movie has a 3.9 user rating on IMDb. It really sucks. A lot of the low ratings for big Hollywood type movies I kind of think "yeah it wasn't good, but a rating that low?". I just looked at this one a minute ago and I felt no reaction like that, it was more of a "yeah, that's about right". It's a shame this movie sucked so much, it could have been awesome. I don't really know any particular part to complain about, just don't watch it.

Bara no soretsu [Funeral parade of roses] Oooh. Magnificent! A very cool collection of different styles and techniques that meet eachother at the high point of the Japanese New-Wave cinema. Documentary, animation, gay cinema, avant-garde, grindhouse, and much more. It has got everything. The movie isn't very hard to follow; as in you've got a story you can recognize. To actually follow it is a little bit harder, since everything thrown together. So watching it for a second time is recommended, so yo can catch everything. That our friend Eddie plays in a pornographic movie makes things even more interesting. Because of this the line of ficion and reality almost completely dissapears. It may sound weird, but it's very satisfactory, to losen up and fully down yourself in the Japanese drag-queen scene at the end of the sixties (yes, very specific :P). That Kubrick got his inspiration for A Clockwork Orange partially from this movie is very clear, as some scenes are directly copied. As you might have noticed, I can really recommend this movie, for those who want to see something different, of course.

Much Ado About Nothing - Shakespeare for the masses. Well, I liked it. Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson sparkle as the couple that always quarrels, the rest of the film is so-so, even though the cast consists of nothing but the greatest stars. The scene where Bene[bleep] overhears his friends talking about Beatrice is simply fantastic though, and it made my day, my weekend even. The world must be peopled!
