Why do people assume men always cry less?

What happened to the good ol' times where 13 year olds would do nothing but play video games and watch cartoons and girls would only be shunned with an "EWWWW"?

Were you alive at that time?...

Men on average cry less than women, that's a statistical fact. But you are going to get some more emotional men and some less emotional women who buck the trend, as is the case with pretty much everything. It's a result of social conditioning, men are discouraged from showing too much emotion because it's seen as feminine. Also, there's probably a biological evolutionary bit of DNA stuff that makes average female brains more outwardly emotional than men in there somewhere, although I'm not 100% sure.

We women cry more because:

a) It's more of a socially acceptable thing. You can be a woman and cry over a film but you look like a wuss if you're a dude and do it.

B) Hormones are powerful things and can make you cry for no reason.

c) Crying is healthy, it gets rid of some of the excess hormones ect from your body.

I ALWAYS cry over the season 4 finale of House... always.

There's no real reason for men to cry more than women *shrugs*

Last night I dreamed that I was crying and the tears were stuck on my face no matter how many times I tried wiping them off. I don't even know why I was crying. It was embarrassing.

I'll tear up when watching an emotional show or something, but I don't really remember the last time I just full out cried. Crying over your friends not being at the same school of you does seem weak. I moved around every 2-5 years for the first 18 years of my life so I saw a lot of friends come and go. You just keep in touch with them (or not) and deal with it. It sucks but honestly the only person I even keep in touch with now out of all the people I went to middle/high school with is one person, who is my current roomate in college as well. (And I actually didn't go to school with him, we were a grade apart).

Crying doesn't achieve anything. Anger is a much more useful emotion.

I use anger alot. <3:

I can't remember last time I cried, closest I got was teary eyed when my dog died.

I'm not a big fan of using anger. Last time I used it, was because a guy was trying to feel up on my girlfriend, (now ex), I kicked his arse, got suspended from school.

Another time I kicked a hole in my door. And another I ended up bleeding severely from my fists cause of letting out anger in the punching bag.

...Seems to me that crying isn't your only problem. You shouldn't lose control over your emotions like that.

Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:

I know I was, best times of my life. Only worries were what game to play, and having like no responsibilities. There were no girl troubles too, we just avoided each other. Kids these days don't know what they're missing out on.

I didn't even cry when I struggled with depression, but I've been told that's fairly normal. I was instead filled with intense feelings of contempt and apathy. I would have rather been sitting and sobbing all day.

I don't cry much though. Happiness will make me tear up much sooner than anything sad will - I tend to get apathetic when I get sad rather than being weepy.

Or use the punching bag even more, but wear gloves.

Oh like hell they don't! Those were awesome times, absolutely no worries about ANYTHING. We did loads of stupid [cabbage] during that time, all fun in games...though by today's "standards" it would be considered kindergarten play. But damn it was fun.

I really don't get it. I'm a boy/man (13 years old) and I tend to cry alot. But why is a man showing his emotions and crying considered weak in some societies? The last week of school, i cried every single day for 2 hours. My ex-girlfriend told me I was weak [cabbage] for crying in front of her, and other people are telling me this too. I don't think it should be considered weak if a man cries. After all, we have emotions too. Not all of us are emotionally stong. The shortest verse in the bible is "Jesus wept." If he can, why can't we? (I'm an athiest though lol)

What do you think?

1. You're not a man. You are in your first teenage year. Please.

2. Regardless of gender, someone who cries too much is frowned upon. If a guy cries too much, he's gay, weak, unmasculine, etc. If a girl cries, she's oversensitive, a drama queen, or an attention [bleep].

Also, you cry too much. Is it wrong for people telling you that they don't like when you cry? It makes things really awkward (especially if you cry over almost anything), and while it may not be a sign of weakness, it's a sign that you can't control/conceal your emotions enough to know what's appropriate and what's not. For example, crying for 2 hours for a week is inappropriate unless someone is dying, or you're watching Old Yeller every day of the week.

You can think about girls and not worry that much about them... Just realize that you're 13/14 and that you're not about to meet the love of your life, you don't have to shut them out. I like hanging out with girls better than with guys sometimes.

Mainly because men are seen as being manly, and manliness doesn't involve crying. plus women are more open to their emotions, men aren't, mostly becuase they're homophobes, and think it's gay.

Eh, I only remember two times I've cried, third grade when my dog died and sixth grade when a grandmother did. And some almost-not-really-quite-crying last year when my grandfather died.

I admit that we (as in men) tend to avoid crying if possible, but my case it can't be homiphobia, because one of my closer friends is bi. I guess it would be trying to be manly and macho to a degree, although most men would label it as "not showing weakness."

However, I've found video games to be my main emotional outlet. Yeah, I should probably get that checked out....
