Dev. blog - Changing Names, 27 August

The biggest problem I have with this update will be the uncertainty of whether a player joined in 2002 or just stole the name after. I know people come up to me and say "nice username, very unique" but now they will just think that I came up with it after the fact and in essence 'stole' it.

Time to create a little list of names I want to steal, might as well make a few more accs to steal names with, 4 may not be enough...

Not only is this nice to hear something more about, but Mod Duncan is a pretty good writer as well.

Haha, I remember you from when I lurked MMG's clan chat. Everyone loved your name.

But if it really bothered you that people thought you "stole" the name, you could always add the person so they can see your true username.

I thought about it, and I'll hate this update. Now you never know who you are talking with, its not so bad if you just delete a number like 2noob4you, but if I changed my name to something very different nobody would know it was me.

Unless you'd check my highscores, but it gets tedious to do for everyone.

Tevesh Szat used to be another player around my level. I ran into him around Yanille, but he's not on high scores anymore meaning he was probably banned. I hope I can get the name then. I want that extra 'e'.

This is the internet. Everyone has a "mysterious gender."

Except Jagex said that altering your username everywhere it can show up would be too difficult, so it's likely that your display name will be separate from your username, your username being what shows up on the highscores, friend/ignore list, etc.

Champions Online did this system perfectly by allowing duplicate display names, but unique usernames.

So on Champions Online, I appear as: ____@Omali

I don't like the idea that if you change your name, someone else can take your old name...

(unless I read it wrong)

But still, I think it should be like msn/yahoo/aim/etc where you can change your display name whenever you want. Would be fun.

Also when your friend changes their name, will it change on your friendlist or will you lose a friend every time they change their name?

They havnt exactly worded it clearly so I am unsure if their solution is what I prefer or not.

Personally I think its a good idea if people just do whatever nickname they want keeping the same userman. Meaning that people can have the same nickname. However it sounds like that isnt the case.. It sounds like its based on having unique nicknames.. idk. If people join the same chat with the same username just have the system add something to the end of it. Like 1, 2 3 etc or whatever.

I am ok with my name but if I could improve it I would want to have either 'Baz' or 'Bazza' - If I cant I dont mind as I already like my unique username. Its my online gaming alias anyway.

My displayname is totally going to be Peregrine and I am going to rage on someone if they take it.

We could even take names away from unused accounts to free them up for other players, and the worst that would happen is that those accounts would have to pick a new name if they wanted to come back to the game.

Is it me or does that seem totally unfair to people? They original thought of the name to use for Runescape and now a people can come and take that away from them.

A totally   from me.

If they don't use it, then other players should be able to use it. Being the first to come up with it doesn't mean its yours for eternity. Especially if you don't use it. Besides, Jagex owns the account, so they have the right to do whatever they want anyways.

But I reckon this won't be a problem. I found this post on the RSOF:

Your initial display name will be your username, so there's no mad rush for names on launch day That also means we aren't going to force you to choose a new name if you like your current one."

"We're not going to take your display names away. When I say 'inactive', I really mean 'completely inactive, never been used, not even played' - if you're posting on this thread, your account is going to be over the threshold already. We only want to free up the names of accounts that have literally never been used and aren't ever going to be used, not take your name away just because you haven't logged in for a while. We're always going to err on the side of caution - we don't want to catch any genuine players in this at all

Can't provide the QFC since it's posted in the high level forum.

Lesson of the day: If you move your feet, you lose your seat.

Business lesson of the day: If you quit Runescape and leave for a very long time, not even bothering to check in every now and then to say "what's up", you're not a money maker, and as such Jagex could care less about you. They're not going to dole your name out after a month, it's going to be after a pretty long time, more likely more than a year.

I hope this update kills name-squatters. The username Omali's been sat on for over six years, and has never made it to the highscores. I'm pretty sure it's banned, but there's no definitive way to find out.

As for abuse: Some people need to stop busting innovation for the sake of looking up and down to find ways that people will troll it. "Omg someone will take my username just to laugh at me!" Your personal squabbles are minuscule in comparison to the benefits this could bring Runescape, particularly in the countless accounts that were banned for too many spaces, because someone from CS thought they were bad, etc.
