Oh dear god reading this thread is like watching a gaggle of middle age women talk about raising kids.

Except clothes actually matter.

Yea, who cares about kids? Mothers should spend all their time talking about the prices of sweaters at Banana Republic.

I'm glad you have your head screwed on the right way, Dupin

It does seem to be quite an obsession to some.

I have the most posts ITT, and style is definitely not one of the things I think about the most.

Camera guy: Whoa, haha, are you okay dude?

Matt: You want anything funny that happens, don't you?

It's second, isn't it?

Lets get back on topic now...

I need some advice for buying dress shoes. My current ones are horrible and I can't wear normal shoes to a formal event, so I think it's time to get a new pair. Since I can't afford any designer brands or anything, I just want some advice on what to look for when shopping. Like what color, shape, material, that kind of stuff.

Also, if anyone could point me in a good direction to start, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Go to Goodwill. Look for good shoes. Allen Edmonds (pretty much THE American shoe brand) shoes can be found at so many stores because of how many people don't understand that shoes are an investment.

It depends on what you wear to these formal events. I'd look for black or brown, simple oxfords (cap-toe, plain-toe, or wingtips because they are fun) depending on what your formalwear colors are. Generally these shoes need a polish, sometimes they will need a bit of handiwork, but a cobbler could rebuild one of those shoes (and give them an incredible shine) for 70 dollars or so. Paying a total of 80 dollars for shoes that look brand-new (and likely cost in the $300 range brand-new) is an invigorating feeling. I would replace the laces, though. They generally look too ... Just, bad. They also get covered with polish, which makes them nasty. Leather laces the same color as the shoe are a good idea, I bet.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Ok, I'll just have to search around for a good deal then, since even $80 is still a lot to me, since I'm, well, poor. I'll also post pictures for your approval before I buy anything, since I don't really trust my own fashion sense when it comes to shoes. Thanks for the help.

That would be if the shoe needs entirely reconstructed. Which it won't. You probably won't pay more than the eight dollars or so at the store.

You won't have time to ask for opinions, though. You'll just need to snatch the deal up. Bring someone with a fair style, or at least a good idea of your style.

Maybe now's the time to stop posting caustic one-liners about everything you don't like. You're starting to forget to read the posts you're replying to.

Hedgehog, what event are you going to?

Date is wearing purple dress for homecoming. I was considering wearing a purple tie with a black shirt, but I don't know if that would look good or not....

I hate the idea of matching your date (colorwise). I hate girls' concept of "matching" in high school, too, while I'm on that subject. Contrast is far more interesting. And I dunno if girls who will only wear nike shorts, a t-shirt and flip-flops (with hair in a ponytail) should be criticizing other girls that at least make an effort.

Well I can match and contrast at the same time... I mean if I get a shirt that contrasts then I can get a tie that matches and visa-versa. I can contrast my own clothing while contrasting and matching with hers.

I would ask her what she thought on matching. It really comes down to personal preference and matching outfits is a typical cliché for HS dances. Personally I would just wear a nice black suit so it takes the stress off trying to match her outfit and focus more on making yourself look good.

Now. Socks, as inoffensive as they appear to be, I want to clairfy some things.

1. One should never wear white socks with black or brown dress shoes.

2. If one is to wear white socks with white dress shoes, they need to be impeccably clean.

3. Patterned socks are completely fine, depending on the pattern.

On patterned socks, do you wear patterned socks? I love them, I find them a way to help stand out. The colour has to be matching though. Argyle and strips and checkers. They all help brighten up a plain old blazer + dark jeans.

Your opinions?

I have a pair each of red argyle, red striped, purple argyle, and purple striped, and I love them. Not only are they strikingly beautiful, they are very cozy.

As for my casual socks, I have a couple sets of neon orange, green, and rainbow that I stole from my sister, and I get a lot of compliments on them :shades:.

I also enjoy no show socks when I don't want people to question my sexuality.
