I'm looking to splurge on a good winter coat this year. I find things like coats are worth investing in because they last 5+ years if you get a nice stylish & quality one. I'm pretty sure the last coat I bought was when I was 15 (20 now) and it's still very stylish, it's just too small now :P

I was thinking of something with some sort of collar+lapel and fairly long too yet not as long as trench coats. It must be nice and warm too since I live in freaking Canada. Any suggestions?

Also, no hood and no fur would be ideal (no hood is optional though)

EDIT: I just found one to my liking and it turns out to be 1,600$... holy [bleep]

sorry for the pic images... this one is also nice and a bit less (300$)

The second one isn't much of a coat. The first one is nice but extremely expensive. NY just had it's fall fashion week so I'd expect to start seeing more fall/winter collections hitting stores soon.

The first one is extremely nice. It has a really nice cut. I think if you took care of that, it would last for a fair while.

Check Zara's online store (yes they have an online store now). I can't guarantee they'll do much to warm you up though. And if their shoes are anything to go by, they'll be trash within a year.

I'll sell you my $7 one. It's about a month old, but still mint.

Zara winter coats are extremely slim fitting and not particularly thick, they're not cheap but the quality didn't seem that high. I bought a black overcoat from Jeff Banks a couple of years ago, similar in style to this:

It looks good with a suit (what I primarily bought it for) but also looks good with jeans, smart shoes and a jumper in winter. It should last me for years.

And whoever asked about Henri Lloyd, I bought a very nice white casual shirt from there this summer, they had some nice casual shirts and jumpers in their sale.

Ah, here we go. This is my perfect coat:

But they only ship to the UK and theres no more smalls :(

My brother found something similar to your first pic for around $100 in the Toronto area. It was nice, I'll have to ask him where he got it.

Thing is, it wasn't super thick - Probably would be ok down to -10, depending on how you like the cold.

Oh look, a down vest, and it's 15$. Guess who's pulling the trigger tomorrow? My mom.

If you look through the Henri Lloyd Key Looks you may be able to find a nice coat.

Like assassin_696 said Jeff Banks are also a good brand for a nice coats.

Brother has a question for you all, what's the best way to stand out at a school dance, clothing wise? Homecomings coming up!

To reply to this, definitely don't wear a white jacket, very few people can pull them off (especially young people) and he'd just end up standing out awkwardly. As someone else said, a white silk scarf adds a nice touch to black tie without being too showy. A hand tied bow tie is also a nice touch, people probably won't notice when you're wearing it but it's worth it for the effort of being able to casually untie it towards the end of the evening. Or wear a flower in the lapel with a waiscoat, or a pocket square (but not both).

I tried an Apartment 9 blazer (dark) on for kicks the other day. Well, after all these years of goofy dressing, I finally found my niche.

I'm having a pretty relaxing day today, homework free, so I've been looking up some new stuff for fall. I'm feeling a jacket like this, http://needsupply.com/mens/outerwear/wilson-coat.html and some boots like these http://www.wolverine.com/us/1000mile/ (Their $325 so I'm going to see how I feel about them in about a month or two when it starts getting colder here in AZ before I through down that kind of money).

Those are three of my friends.

Would you say he pulled off the white tux?

can't see a clear photo of it, but that tie looks horrid...

lampost_sig_stark.png

The photo isn't clear...?

I mean clear image. Like, from that angle I can't tell whether it fits nice or not.

lampost_sig_stark.png

Oh, I see. That's the only one I have from that day though. Maybe he's got others.

Looks like he's going to prom. He's probably going to prom. Or, I guess homecoming. There's lots "wrong" with it. But he looks like he's having fun. So, aye. The tie's probably clip-on anyway.

They are a hell of a pair of boots. Red Wing also makes great boots, and I've heard different rumors about which are better - in a heavy work environment.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Herringbone is beautiful. I approve Steve. On a lot of those shoes, I find the sole is too tall. Makes them look like high-heels.

Thin soles are a sure give-away of a bad construction in that type of boot/shoe. Personally, I've seen enough of the whole workwear thing.

How classy are you looking for?

Like dress shirt black slacks classy or polo/jeans classy?

This is the style thread now, the OP is pretty much irrelevant.
